The Radeon 7850 is an overclocking beast

I dont know if you are truly that thick but going back before the 28nm launch, if you tell people they can get gtx580 performance at less than half the power use and for ~$250, most would agree its a good deal.

That's where you're mistaken. You're not getting GTX 580 performance and the performance increase does not scale perfectly with the overclock either. Keep dreaming of the imaginary gains of the 7000 series and downplaying the gains we've seen from one past generation to the next if you wish. I also wasn't aware that every 7850 was capable of 1250Mhz to provide it with some worthwhile performance either.

I mean wow, look at the real world gains! 🙄

Considering the posts you've made in the past regarding upcoming AMD GPU releases though, it's hardly surprising you're attempting to make them appear better than they are.

i used both catalyst controller and msi afterburner. i am not increasing the voltage. how do i remove that option from CCC when i can't even load it? thanks for your help

according to the msi afterburner my driver version is: 7.14.10.0903

Use sapphire trixx for overclocking

my 7850 is on its way back to beachaudio. it was probably the best card I have owned in terms of overclockability :sigh:

So you are going to take Guru3d's single test where it scales poorly with OC (who knows what they did wrong?) when we all know from almost every other review out there that GCN scales linearly with speed increases.. okay dude, whatever rocks ur socks.

Btw, same card: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/HD_7850_Power_Edition/31.html

18% OC = 18% real performance gains.

7850 @ 1120mhz core. A pretty weak OC. Guess what, @1120 core it matches a gtx580. In a game where NV typically has a performance lead as well. Push it further with vcore mods, it will match an OC gtx580. I dont think reviewers take effort when they OC, especially the ram, as going above its optimum speed will drop performance, not increase it. The typical approach of cranking it and see where it will crash is very poor when overclocking gddr5. I dont trust review sites pushing ram speeds that high... from my own exp n reading forums, typically higher than 5800 is very rare and often leads to major performance loss.

Another strike against the Guru3d results is that they mistakenly refer to the card as a 7870 instead of a 7850.

That tells me they did a copy/paste of a different test and then edited it. So overall, if they made a big glaring error about mis-naming the card, maybe there are more hidden errors they didn't catch when changing the numbers around, or perhaps they are not sophisticated enough to realize they have other errors?

Hell, 20% overclocks are a pretty big deal on most other chips but that's pretty much guaranteed on the 7850 and at stock volts even.
Yeah but 1250mhz core is a 45% overclock and is approaching the limits of the chip.

You know what though, it turns out Cursive made a typo. 🙂

What 7850 make overclocks the best, such as which one can reach the highest stable overclock? I don't mind putting fans on max or anything, just as long as it is a stable 24/7 overclock. I was initially thinking of getting the MSI Power Edition, but I'm not sure anymore as I have been told VTX and Powercolor graphics cards are more stable.
Thanks in advance

powercolor is garbage. Get the power edition

thats not true because the other low scaling OC are mostly due to pushing the ram too high, you lose a lot of performance when that happens without it crashing due to GDDR5 auto-corrections. typical of reviewers who just crank it without benching to see if performance goes up or down. have to be careful with ram OCs. always test it with a benchmark.

I doubt it when same chip Hawk 7870 is getting 1440mhz on air. I would like to buy one just to play but since I have 680 and $350 is way overpriced I'll just live vicariously through y'all.

I've looked at that review. I'm not sure what they are doing wrong (running the vram into error correction, maybe?) but their O/C scaling is not typical. I even created a review thread at guru3d and commented days ago. No response or even interest at all. Not one other reply.

To be clear, I usually like guru3d's reviews fine. This one just doesn't make sense.

The MSI power edition is the only 7850 on the market that I know of that actually has a modified PCB including beefed up PWM/VRM and a heatsink that covers the mosfets/memory. Everything else is just a more or less reference design with an aftermarket cooler on it. It's a no-brainer, really.

Which doesn't mean much when most 7850s use 7870 PCBs and so are already pretty overengineered.

Good point there. Just speculating here, but suppose the 7850 Pitcairns are binned lower than the 7870's and require more voltage to reach parity, wouldn't you prefer a more robust power delivery system for aggressive overclocks? Especially considering how infrequently must people upgrade video cards. Then there's how the twin frozr IV cooler destroys most if not all 3rd party coolers with temps while not being any louder than the reference at full load. Overkill sure....but isn't that what an enthusiast wants? IJS 🙂

There is no way that chip is stable at 1440mhz. The best of these chips can barely crack 1300mhz. Maybe with water and a volt mod 1400mhz is possible but I doubt it.

The hawk 7870 is a different animal build-wise. If there's a setup that could pull it off, it'd be that one.
