It becomes much more yellow if you crush or grind it if I remember correctly.

It will add a golden-yellow color to the food.. if you add saffron.

If you touch that directly.. it will pass on both red and yellow(bottom tip) colors onto your hands.

These should be very easy for some, impossible for others.

What's the origin of the word laser?

Damn I should know this one :(

What's the main difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger?

One is turbo and one is super of course!

What did Derrick Thomas do seven times on November 11, 1990?

Jack off? No idea November 11th is Remembrance/Armistice day, does it have anything to do with that?

Everyone knows Thriller is the top-selling album in history, but what's the top-selling greatest hits album?

Don't know music

The Bible was written in Hebrew, Ancient Greek, and which other language?

Don't know. Some Semitic language I guess

On August 2nd, 216 BC, a Roman army was butchered by a much smaller Carthaginian army in the most famous example of the double envelopment maneuver in the ancient world. Name the maneuver or the battle. Bonus points for a brief description of the tactics.

I've read about this actually but I can't remember it.

What's the origin of the word laser?

Light amplified something emitting radiation.

What's the main difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger?

A turbocharger passively receives it's air source from engine exhaust, while a supercharger is run mechanically off the engine and generates its own.

What did Derrick Thomas do seven times on November 11, 1990?

He was a DE, so I guess he had 7 sacks?

Everyone knows Thriller is the top-selling album in history, but what's the top-selling greatest hits album?

I'd go with the Beatles.

The Bible was written in Hebrew, Ancient Greek, and which other language?

Aramaic.

No effing clue, but Hannibal was from Carthage, so maybe it was the double elephant side-step stomp?

What's the origin of the word laser? Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation

What's the main difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger? A turbo is driven by the exhaust, while a super is driven by a belt. Or, a turbo produces most of its power at high RPM, while a super is flatter.

What did Derrick Thomas do seven times on November 11, 1990? Sacked Dave Krieg, the Seahawks QB, breaking his own record of six, and ALMOST getting an eighth on the last play of the game, a game-winning TD pass for the Seahawks. DE is close...he was an OLB. I watched that game.

Everyone knows Thriller is the top-selling album in history, but what's the top-selling greatest hits album? The Eagles Greatest Hits, 1971-1975

The Bible was written in Hebrew, Ancient Greek, and which other language? Aramaic

On August 2nd, 216 BC, a Roman army was butchered by a much smaller Carthaginian army in the most famous example of the double envelopment maneuver in the ancient world. Name the maneuver or the battle. Bonus points for a brief description of the tactics. The battle of Cannae. Either pincer or double envelopment would do. Hannibal put his weakest troops in the center, his veterans on his left flank guarded by a river, and his cavalry on his right flank. When his center started to fall back and the Romans charged in, he swept around them from both flanks, encircling them so tightly they barely had room to use their weapons. ~90% of the Romans were killed in one afternoon, anywhere from 40,000 to 90,000 men.

Again, great guesses and answers!

Apollo 11. Half credit...I'm looking for the name of the rocket, not the mission.

Calcium. Half credit...compound, not element.

Within human perception? I'm as stumped as you are. I hope it's not some obscure number that only lightyologists would know. Can't even make a guess at a thing like that.

Hope you guys are enjoying my questions...takes time to make good ones, add hints, fact check, and type it all up. Thanks to Loc for starting this.

(jk, it's from a movie)

Astronomy 2: You may have heard about the supernova near the Big Dipper (an asterism). Sadly, it's not visible to the naked eye, and I don't think I have the equipment to see it.
What was the name of the last supernova visible to the naked eye, and where was it? (I'll accept several different answers for where it was.)
Ever heard of a fishing spider?

SN1987a I believe. It was either in the large or small magellanic clouds.

The name's right. Pick a location.

After that, what constellation was it in?

Physics 1: You may have heard that the SSC is looking for the Higgs Boson. That particle, in theory, carries mass. What was the last massive particle discovered in a particle accelerator? The tau neutrino shouldn't count, but you're on the right end of the spectrum.

The top quark I believe
That's what I was going for, yes.

What is a notochord?
Primitive spinal chord, I think. (Without the spinal bones, in other words.)

What was the original usage of the term "Planet X" in reference to, why was its existence theorized, and what happened to it? Pluto...people noticed irregularities in Neptune's orbit...he became the faithful companion of Mickey Mouse
The funny thing about Planet X is that Pluto wasn't it - it was just in the right location as seen from Earth to look like it. It didn't have enough mass to account for the "missing" planet. What I don't remember is what happened to Planet X - I guess it just disappeared in the math as better observations were taken or something.

Was it used on Neptune because of the orbit of Uranus was irregular and they thus concluded there was another large body tugging on it?

What are the names of Mars' moons?
Deimos and Phobos

What is phrenology?
The study of the skulls relation to personality.

What drug does Sherlock Holmes use most often?
Tobacco?

1 hour and 35 minutes

IDK.. pretty weak in chemistry though. I think it is Calcium Carbonate.

No idea on the name of the rocket.
Saturn V

Saturn V (pronounced "Saturn Five".)

Within human perception?
No, just based on current physics.

As far as I know, there's no limit. You just get farther into the radio band. Well, maybe a standing wave with a wavelength the diameter of the universe is the limit.

Reminds me of a joke, which I don't remember well enough for it to be funny, about a guy who gets lost in the woods with a very-long-wave radio. He calls for help, but because it's a long-wave radio, he can only reach receivers thousands of miles away. So he calls Japan to get the ranger station 10 miles away to rescue him or something like that.

Yeah.. there was a wrong reading taken in one of the observatory. The data showed that there must be a huge planet influencing the orbit of Neptune. Neil Degrass Tyson's The Pluto Files is all about this.

Well, since someone answered the last math problem, here's a geometry one:

You're a ball-bearing manufacturer. You've just gotten a good deal on 1cmx1cmx1cm inflexible cubic boxes to ship your ball bearings in. What's the maximum number of 1mm-diameter spherical ball bearings can you fit inside each box?

What is a notochord?
It forms ventral to the neural tube, and is what will become the vertebrae.

What is an orchidometer and what does it do?
It actually measures testicle size. No kidding. Look it up.

What was the original usage of the term "Planet X" in reference to, why was its existence theorized, and what happened to it?
In the same way that Neptune was discovered because of irregularities in Uranus' orbit, Planet X was theorized to exist because of irregularities in Neptune's orbit. Pluto was discovered in 1930 and seemed to validate the hypothesis, but as time went on and the estimate of Pluto's size dropped, so did its potential in validating Percival Lowell's theory (there was actually a paper published that proposed that at the contemporary rate of decline in Pluto's mass, it would disappear by the 1970s or so). The search for such a Planet X continued until Voyager 2 studied more closely Neptune's mass and orbit. The subsequent revision in data, when plugged into the same models, eliminated the need for a further planet to explain Neptune's orbit.

What are the names of Mars' moons?
Good, Phobos and Deimos, the gods of fear and dread.

What is phrenology?
Phrenology is the surface examination of the head and skull; the theory was that different parts of the brain were correlated to certain attributes; when these attributes were stronger that part of the brain was bigger, and there was a resultant bulge. Complete rubbish, of course, but phrenologists actually fortuitously recognized that the brain splits its function geographically, something that wasn't recognized by contemporary critics of phrenology until much later.

Chemically, what is the difference between starch and cellulose?
Both are made of long chains of glucose molecules. There are several differences. Starch is actually made of two different polysaccharides, amylose and amylopectin. The polysaccharides making up cellulose are much longer, up to several thousand residues long. But the one I was looking for, and the one that is relevant to our metabolism of cellulose, is that in cellulose the glucose residues are joined by beta-1-4 glycosidic bonds, which means that each glucose molecule is upside down, so to speak, relative to the glucose molecules it is bonded to.

What are Tanner Stages?
Tanner stages are a measure of development of secondary sexual characteristics - pubic hair, breast, and penile development.

What drug does Sherlock Holmes use most often?
Cocaine. Apparently he also dabbled in morphine, but I don't remember reading a story where he actually uses it.

1 hour, 32 minutes, 42 seconds; or 5562s. If anyone wants the working I'll write it up.
