IIRC sucrose is two glucose bonded together. fructose is glucose with an end group on in place of a hydrogen atom.

could be wrong - i know we covered this in HS biology 10 years ago :p

Yup fructose is a monosaccharide and sucrose is a disaccharide (fructose + glucose).

It pisses me off that I can't remember this. :(

Polyethylene would be my (uneducated) guess for most common plastic, as well. There was probably a time back in the 30's/40's when it was Bakelite. :p

Bakelite and polythene, one is a thermoset and the other is a thermoplastic...

But what is bakelites real (chemical) name?

The spice would be probably be saffron.

Yes, but the hint given was a bit misleading.

While on tour near Rohtang Pass.. I had the pleasure of visiting a garden which cultivates saffron. The aroma of fresh saffron is like no other.. it has been 6 long years and yet I still remember that experience. Also.. has to experience mountain sickness for the first time.

Yes, but the hint given was a bit misleading.

Sugar cane is green and brown, but what would you say if I asked you what color sugar is? :)

Two things:

Most of Aaron's career was played in the shadow of Willie Mays, and, it is no insult at all to say, rightly so. Mays was simply THE BEST, hands down.

Hank's teammate Eddie Matthews' career was regrettably played in Aaron's shadow. Matthews has never gotten his full due. HOF, a member of Mlb's All Century team, arguably the second best third baseman of all time behind Mike Schmidt, and almost no one remembers him. :(

Aaron's numbers in the first half of his career made him great, but his continued performance in his golden years made him singular.

Interesting how close Schmidt, Mathews, and Jones are in this list: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/onbase_plus_slugging_plus_career.shtml

Who is the runner that ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens?

In what order, and what are the distances respectively, for an Ironman Triathlon?

Pheidippides. "Rejoice, we conquer!"

2 mile swim, 128 mile bike, 26 mile run, IIRC.

When I think about saffron.. I think of this.

Saffron_Spice_Only.jpg

Also, ever heard of jaggery?

Hmm...I'd forgotten about it in that form. If I were running a contest, I'd give you a free T-shirt :)

Haven't the slightest what jaggery is.

Edit: figured out the post thing

Hints are blacked out. Trying to get a variety of questions which might be guessable.

What's the scientific name of the southern lights?
Australis polaris? Hmmm, Australis Aurora

Who won the Hugo and Nebula for two different novels in consecutive years? Alternately, name one of the books.
It happened in 1985 and 1986.
The second book was a sequel to the first.
Isaac Asimov

What is traditionally the most expensive spice by weight?
It's yellow.
Saffron?

Physics 1: You may have heard that the SSC is looking for the Higgs Boson. That particle, in theory, carries mass. What was the last massive particle discovered in a particle accelerator?
Tau electron?

Tau electron?
Nope. Plus, you un-hid my hint. :\

Edit: Turns out I was wrong, the Tau neutrino does count. :$ I'd figured it wasn't discovered in an accelerator.

These should be very easy for some, impossible for others.

What's the origin of the word laser?

What's the main difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger?

What did Derrick Thomas do seven times on November 11, 1990?

Everyone knows Thriller is the top-selling album in history, but what's the top-selling greatest hits album?

The Bible was written in Hebrew, Ancient Greek, and which other language?

On August 2nd, 216 BC, a Roman army was butchered by a much smaller Carthaginian army in the most famous example of the double envelopment maneuver in the ancient world. Name the maneuver or the battle. Bonus points for a brief description of the tactics.

not sure

What's the main difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger?
Both are forced-induction, but turbocharges use hot exhaust gas to spin a turbine, whereas superchargers work in some other way.

What did Derrick Thomas do seven times on November 11, 1990?
Score a home run?

laser - light amplified stimulated emission of radiation, IIRC
turbo vs. super - superchargers are belt driven. got the turbo right :)
carthage battle - i want to say pincer, but if i'm not mistaken one of the mongolians actually invented that. my world history education has failed me :(

Both good guesses. I could have been more clear by saying "originally written in".

Aramaic?

Who invented the telephone?

Who did he call?

What did he say?
Alexander Graham Bell
His assistant, named below
"Come here, Watson, I need you."

Or so the story goes, anyway. I wouldn't be that calm after spilling acid on myself.

What is the most populous city in the western hemisphere?
Not New York.

This depends on where you define the city limits. I'm going to say Tokyo but Mexico City and several Indian cities are candidates, again depending on where you demarcate the city boundaries. Different lists often have cities ranked differently because of this.

What's the scientific name of the southern lights?

I've read this in the past but can't remember

Who holds the MLB record with 6856 career total bases? (A single is one base, double is two bases, etc)
Not Babe Ruth.
This person played from 1954 to 1976.

Yuck sports.

Who won the Hugo and Nebula for two different novels in consecutive years? Alternately, name one of the books.
It happened in 1985 and 1986.
The second book was a sequel to the first.

Not up on my science fiction authors.

In computing, what does RISC stand for?
The R stands for reduced.

Should know but can't remember

What is traditionally the most expensive spice by weight?

Saffron

Who wrote "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want"?
He was a king.

Religion, I know not.

What is the difference between sucrose and fructose?

One sucks and one fucks? Fructose comes from fruits?

Who is Dean Karnazes and what is he known for?

Who?

What year was the plasma screen invented?

No idea. 1960?

In what galaxy is the supernova that is currently visible exploding in (or was visible the last two nights)?

Is this in the pinwheel galaxy? I know the story well.

Who is the runner that ran from the Battle of Marathon to Athens?

Hermes?

In what order, and what are the distances respectively, for an Ironman Triathlon?

Swimming, Biking, Running. Don't know the distances but I know it's significantly longer than a traditional triathlon.

^^

Astronomy 1: There is an asterism that looks like a teapot. What constellation is it in?
Canadians may not be able to see it.

Don't know this one. Draco?

Astronomy 2: You may have heard about the supernova near the Big Dipper (an asterism). Sadly, it's not visible to the naked eye, and I don't think I have the equipment to see it. :'(
What was the name of the last supernova visible to the naked eye, and where was it? (I'll accept several different answers for where it was.)
Ever heard of a fishing spider? :sneaky:

SN1987a I believe. It was either in the large or small magellanic clouds.

Physics 1: You may have heard that the SSC is looking for the Higgs Boson. That particle, in theory, carries mass. What was the last massive particle discovered in a particle accelerator?
The tau neutrino shouldn't count, but you're on the right end of the spectrum.

The top quark I believe

^^

You said last massive particle though. Although neutrino's have been proven to have non zero mass their mass is so small as to be almost immeasurable with current instruments. Still sticking with the Top quark. :p
