I don't think the OP factored in sales tax in the math. With the sales tax added, this deal isn't too hot. I did the math factoring in local sales tax in San Jose, CA and it comes out to roughly $332 for the Xbox 360. Micro Center's $100 rebate on the Xbox 360 is a better deal and there's no hassles involved.

correct, I did not factor in the tax.

The total outlay was $230 + tax, or $246.xx

since we're factoring in other stuff, I also recieved a free xbox game, 12 free movie/game rentals w/ no restrictions, and a bunch of video game/accessories coupons w/ purchase.

I fail to see how the Microcenter deal is better. At best you would break even with the micro center deal, if you applied for their credit card - but then you don't get all the other freebies that come with it.

That said, the deal is officially over. I actually did it one more time today before returning the xbox, but the guy had to manually enter everything because the sale ended last night. This time I did it in chicago, where the tax rate is much higher, and the total cost was $250ish.

Anyone who gets in on the deal now is extremely lucky.

The total cost is $230 + tax on $980, not tax on $230. It is a better deal than Microcenter @$300, but not by a lot. Microcenter at $200 is almost definitely a better deal, depending on how much those free rentals are worth (how long is the rental period?) and how much the coupons are worth if you use them (compared to prices elsewhere).

It's a great deal, that's for sure. Not enough to compel me to buy it while they're still dying prematurely.

I'm looking at my reciept right now, and the tax is on the $230. If the tax was on $980, I would have paid another $70, yet my reciept and my credit statement state I paid an additional $14.

please explain.

So they didn't charge you ANY tax on the Xbox 360 or on the portion of the credit you used to buy the PS3? That can't be legal.

You made the following transactions involving:
Bought PS3 from Best Buy - paid $600 + tax
Bought Xbox 360 from GameCrazy - paid $400 + tax
Bought Used PS3 from GameCrazy - paid $580 (?) + tax
Returned PS3 to Best Buy - refunded $600 + tax

It's legal because it is a trade in, not a purchase. the credit applied towards the ps3 is not taxed.

Now, If I applied the credit towards a gift card, then used the gift card to pay for the ps3, I would have been taxed on the $580.

think of it as a $3 ink coupon. staples gives you a credit of $3 off any purchase in the store, in exchange for your empty ink trade in. you use a $3 off coupon at staples, you don't get charged tax on the $3 amount that was deducted from the purchase.

Wait so they gave you $750 for the ps3 and then sold it back for less? Am I missing something?

the ps3 is now considered used because they are supposed to open it to test it. therefore, they connot sell it at MSRP because the seal has been broken.

Still doesn't seem right, but maybe someone else knows better than I do.

Microsoft is subsidizing the trade-in price for the PS3. You get 150% of the trade-in value for your PS3.

i changed that to make more sense, think of it as a $3 ink coupon at staples. it's the exact same idea. staples is giving you $3 credit towards any purchase when you recycle an ink cart. they don't charge you tax on that $3
