the power of lightning

we had some really nasty lightning strikes here in nyc the past few days, guy i know said his 36" lcd tv got zapped and died by one such strike even though he had a heavy duty apc surge protector on it.

if your house should get hit by lightning, will anything stop it from frying your pc/tv, etc? like a ups or line conditioner. people tell me that no matter what you use to protect your electronics, lightning always wins. even if the computer/tv is off at the time.

so i ask, the smart people on this bbs, is this true ?

Was everything on the surge protector? cable? phone line? antenna? ethernet cabole from an unprotected router or switch? There is more to surge protection than the power cord alone.

Lightning is quite powerful. If you take a sword and point it into the sky while yelling "I HAVE THE POOOOOWWWWEEERRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!," lightning will strike the sword and TURN YOU INTO FREAKIN' HE-MAN, DUDE!!!

careful around orko tho.... hes a tad homocidal

A surge supressor doesn't protect against lighning, just powerline surges from shifting loads (some of those are caused by lightning strikes that happen somewhere else). Putting a lightning rod on your house is about the best that you can do.

I'm always amused by the people who think surge protectors will protect against lightning. Lightning travels 4 miles through the air... Some little 1x1x12 inch box isn't going to stop it.

They will unless the hit is quite nearby.
If lightning hits your house, of course there is not much you can do.
If you know a real bad storm is coming and you have expensive stuff, it might be wise to unplug it.

I don't think there is any surge protector on the planet that can stop a lightning bolt.

Hundreds of thousands of volts and thousands of amps are going to overwhelm any protection you can think of short of unplugging your electronics.

surge protectors are crap and they don't protect from lightning anyway

some UPS's have a "lightning warranty", but they won't stop a direct hit either
but i recommend UPS's anyway, they are cool

I thought the whole theory of operation behind surge suppression devices was that they would become open circuits fast enough that a surge would not have time to reach the electronics on the other side.

Bwahaha.

Read up on what lightning can do. Sometimes even unplugging a device is not good enough. The air just about crackles with electricity when lightning is intense. My flourecent light desk lamp glows when that happens.

Instead of stopping it, I prefer to harness it. You never know when you'll be stuck in a year and need 1.21 Jiggawatts...

A lightning strike and a surge are two completely different animals.
