An average bolt of negative lightning carries a current of 30-to-50 kiloamperes(kA), although some bolts can be up to 120kA, and transfers a charge of 5 coulombs and 500 megajoules (enough to light a 100 watt light bulb for 2 months).

An average bolt of positive lightning carries a current of up to 300 kiloamperes (about ten times as much current as a bolt of negative lightning), transfers a charge of up to 300 coulombs, has a potential difference up to 1 gigavolt (a thousand million volts), lasts for hundreds of milliseconds, and dissipates enough energy to light a 100 watt lightbulb for up to 95 years.

I hope he doesn't get hit again.

:D

Lightning is quite powerful. If you take a sword and point it into the sky while yelling "I HAVE THE POOOOOWWWWEEERRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!," lightning will strike the sword and TURN YOU INTO FREAKIN' HE-MAN, DUDE!!!

zomg!

They actually made a He-man movie? I thought it was a cartoon only.

Yup, with Dolph Lundgren and Courtney Cox. Text

we had some really nasty lightning strikes here in nyc the past few days, guy i know said his 36" lcd tv got zapped and died by one such strike even though he had a heavy duty apc surge protector on it.

if your house should get hit by lightning, will anything stop it from frying your pc/tv, etc? like a ups or line conditioner. people tell me that no matter what you use to protect your electronics, lightning always wins. even if the computer/tv is off at the time.

so i ask, the smart people on this bbs, is this true ?

Topic Title: the power of lightning
Topic Summary: can it be stopped from toasting electronics
Nothing man makes can withstand a direct hit.

Way too many Amps.
