The Post PC Era

Within arm's reach, I have an iP4, an LG Optimus, an HTC Flyer, a BB PlayBook, a Kindle Touch, and a couple of iPads.

Read my post dude.

Apple is changing the world of computing about as much as having a TV in every room changed the TV market.

You can't go more than 2 feet without checking the internet congrats.

I get way more work done when I stay the hell away from the net and only use it for one task like "I'm bored post on AT" instead of "how did I end up on videos of cats on youtube."

The market hasn't really changed and the PC definitely isn't going away just as a TV in the living room isn't going away.

Wow. You're a sad, sad fanboy.

Anybody who doesn't buy into your fantasies of "One World, Under Apple, Hallowed Be Thy Name" is stupid? Cram your iShit back up your your iHole, some of us are not interested in your religious iCrusade.

ftfy.

by the way, your retort sounds so much better when read in the voice of Ron Swanson.

How much money did you guys make yesterday? I locked in $45,000 for holding Apple stock for slightly over a month. Guess it's time to build that new gaming desktop.

Time for you to say hello to a docking station. With keyboard, mouse, and big LCD.

Desktops are dead for the consumer.

Considering iOS is not exactly designed for use a a desktop I don'r see that working out so well.

Honeycomb/ICS work well with mouse and keyboard input but you're still stuck using an underpowered tablet as your pc.

That's funny.

What is a tablet other than a mobile computer?

this. Tablets and smartphones just makes PC even more personal. I don't think PC is defined by a X86 chip though that's what it seems like people are are drawings the line. X86 = PC and atom/tegra = tablet. I read the other day there's a version of Transformer coming with a X86 (i3/5) chip and windows.

Apple is a brand. Their products show the brand. Prices? Ridiculous. But consumers are willing to pay the price for the brand. Who else has iOS on their PC's or tablets? No one.

If you don't game or do any work of any type on a computer then yeah you could enter into the post-PC era before other people do.

I guess.

However some people do have a need for a keyboard and mouse interface. Until smartphones get some clever interface that can substitute for both of those the PC era, while in decline, won't be over.

😀

haven't laughed like that for some time.

(by the way--your docking station "solution" is simply trying to create a desktop--because that is obviously what most people still need)

Windows 2000 would like a word with you.

And Windows 8 makes my balls itch.

And not in a good way.

Ah yes, Windows 2000. Not-quite XP and not-quite 98, marketed as the most secure operating system ever and released with a million security bugs. Granted it got better as the years went on, and it's not the worst by far, but still mediocre IMO.

And rest assured my opinion on Windows 8 did a swift 180 upon actually using it. I imagine it might be decent on a tablet, but for the PC? Lol.

I just started a job and I'm doing some helpdesk (first time doing that) and I decided that people have been living in the post-PC era for a while. It seems like the average user can't do more than one thing on their computer, so they're already used to running one app on their computer at a time. Someone's in their email and intell them to open Internet explorer and they say 'ok, I just have to close this'. I want to scream.

But yeah, I think the desktops and even laptops are on their way out for most consumers. I do 90% of my computer work on a tablet and phone as it is.

The whole tablet/phone thing kinda scares me. To me I see those as "extra" toys and not a replacement for a real PC but the industry is trying to make it replace PCs. I wonder if we'll hit a point where we wont be able to easily buy parts to build a computer anymore. If it's only the enthusiast market that does that, it's not enough for the companies to continue producing all the parts.

We'll end up with proprietary throw away PCs as being the only computers, no standard parts inside. I dread that time, and I hope it never happens.

I would not say I hate tablets and stuff I think they have a use, but I really don't think they can or should replace PCs. They're only an accessory.

LOL yeah people are weird like that. I worked at a helpdesk too and ran into lot of people like that. It seems the minute they call help desk their IQ drops even more. They suddenly forgot how to use the internet. I don't know how many times I've told someone to go to a URL and they type it in google. Yet they were able to go to a website to download crap infected with spyware.

PC's have been disposable for years. The advent of sub $400 computers has made it easier to just buy a new one every 3 or 4 years rather than update them.

As I said in another thread, my desktop remains the main machine in the house... the ipad and smartphone are just quickie-lookup things while in the living room... or in bed with netflix. They're just too annoying to use.

I typed this post on my keyboard in like 20 seconds. On an ipad, it would take close to a minute. Hell half the time I choose not to reply to posts while on an ipad.

Laptops are a no-go for me either... sits next to my desktop, just for work work. I use radmin to remote into it from my desktop so I can use its keyboard/mouse/monitor. 😀
