I let my friend borrow Halo...the very first one for Xbox. He turned around and bought all of them... Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, ODST, Halo 4 the next week.

FWIW this is the place of demos.... Which every game should be required to have.

Meh hardly. He's right that we're transitioning away from physical media, and this console cycle we'll probably see a much larger swing. It'll be a painful adjustment for some people, and yes some people will lose out. Its not like he avoids the downsides, he just acknowledges there are more than just downsides.

Nobody is questioning that we're moving away from physical media. It's the idea that physical media is a loophole that is wrong. He starts with a wrong premise which invalidates anything after that.

And I would tell those fuckers to get bent. Intellectual Property is thought control. We agree to some of it, because it's a mutual agreement that benefits the creator and the users of ideas.

The creators are taking things too far, and people are starting to get tired of the manipulation and greed. Copyright has been taken too far, and the creators need to be slapped down. They're not gods. They don't get to control the thoughts and culture of the whole world. They need to learn their place.

It's not the creators... Lets look at it this way. Bungie made Halo, Microsoft published it. How much of the revenue from Halo went to Bungie? 10%? 20%? If it's that high I would be surprised. Microsoft does no work on the game but pockets most of the profit from it.

From what I read a couple months ago, Sony's goal is to have every game on PSN playable. You can play the full game for an hour or whatever time limit they place. Then if you like it, buy it. Then you can continue to play. That's a wonderful idea IMO.

Lies. People don't want to trade games. They want to pay full price all the time and every time for as many iterations of them as they can.

Sorry..after reading...a number of articles put out by interviews with MS this morning defending their go forward plan, I have even more disdain for them.

Its something like $5-10 depending on price, etc. This from a self publishing studio. But this is half remembered from royalty printouts.

Since that article is on cnet it invalidates the entire thing from the get go. Cnet is not gaming oriented, they aren't focused on the gaming industry as their sole audience.

So maybe what really needs to happen is THEY change their ideas, not the customer base. The greedy bastards have it completely wrong. The consumers choose, not them. If every other product in the world can survive on one purchase, so can they, or they deserve to go down in flames like everyone else that fails.

Guarantee this moves forward, they will be hacked and pirated rather quickly.

Depends on the what else company B offers. If it straight up one disc vs one download, I'd take the disc. If it is one disc vs connected to your account that you can redownload at any time (the server is up) and use on any console you wish to download, then I'd go with B.

But my use cases for games don't involve loaning, selling, renting, or burning in a bbq pit.

That's really not the comparison here and you know it. There is a lot more to this purchase than just this "issue" for a large percentage of users. I for one actually want the media aspects, I want the integration with the rest of their ecosystem, and I want the family options. Those things together are enough for me to justify my purchase of console B over console A because I don't give a shit about what happens with the discs or anything else. I don't buy used, I don't resell, I rarely loan outside of family.

This is just like Steam (with family sharing) except for the sales (that we know of), and I'm perfectly fine with that.

I still don't get why people are up in arms about all this. They're clearly aimed at different segments and people already know which one they want.

XBOX Live already has trial support for DLC as I've seen it with some titles. I could see them allowing x-day trials for each character so you can see if you like them, or maybe allowing the character to be used in Training Mode only without paying for it. That way, you could see if you think the character is interesting or not. Frankly, I'm probably just going to get Cinder and maybe Spinal and be done. The only problem is... what if your friend comes over and he plays Thunder? Will he be able to use Thunder when he logs into his account as the second player?

Fair enough. You're entitled to your opinion and I respect that. I hope you indeed have tons of fun with it.

Personally I think Microsoft's policies of trying to turn physical media into an analogue of digital distribution with all of the negatives is basically despicable. Steam isn't a monopoly on PC, there's GoG, Origin, GFWL (LOL), etc. It's glaring when the competition doesn't hamstring things that way.

That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it as well, and judging by the massive backlash on social media, Microsoft is either going to lose bigtime, or backpedal from their BS. I'm betting they get a taste of the first before they decide to backpedal. The question is, will it be too little too late?

I buy music on itunes. I have an ipad that I buy books sometimes.. I try to only buy hard copies locally (socially conscious shopper that like to keep money local here). I buy xbox because I like the controller, the games, I like steam and this seems damn similar. I bought a new computer, login into steam and have all my games. I'm also keen on getting rid of my DVR for the xbox dvr but, that's me.

Hands on experience reports are coming out that it plays pretty good. They say it looks great as well.

As far as "DLC" characters, if he logs into this account and has certain things unlocked, he can use them on your console. That is already done with DLC on the 360, and I am sure MS has said that it works the same, but not with full games if you download them. But, if it is not the original console it was purchased on, the account that owns it must be logged in. And if it is the original console purchased on, any account can use them.

Me and my brothers live in different parts of the country. Consolidating our game library online makes sense, especially for the single player story driven games that this makes sense for like Mass Effect.

Steam it's understood because of the pricing structure and competition in the PC world. It's not the only game in town by any stretch.

Itunes is all cheap media, and people have gotten used to the idea of music/episodes/etc being digital only for the convenience and affordability of it. To really compare this to iTunes, you'd have to force every CD bought (yes, people still buy them, hahah) to be registered with iTunes, and from that point on you couldn't loan it to a friend without going through very narrow criteria. Oh, and can't connect online with your cd player in your car? No music for you. Sorry.

The funny thing is that Steam just got sued for not allowing you to resell a used game so that may be changing. The beauty is that if steam were to implement a system where you can transfer your key to another user, it wouldn't be that big of a deal since games can be had for cheap there not long after they come out anyway. The video game companies are just trying to save their $60 price point with all their might.
