The Internet checks are a huge negative for me. My girlfriend doesn't have Internet at her house so I can't take the console to her house and play with her. I've taken my 360 and PS3 over and have played just fine. won't be able to do it with this. The only way I'd be able to make it work is drive the 20 miles home from work first, connect to the Internet for the daily check, then disconnect it all and drive 20 miles back to my girlfriend's house. Not an ideal solution. I'm not able to bag it up the night before. They're not making it easy for us.

At this point, why stay with consoles? I get all the shitty DRM of PC games, but still have to pay higher prices for my games and pay for Xbox live. I can build a gaming rig for $700, and when all is said and done would probably break even when you consider the cost of gold. Plus, I can plug it in to my tv and use a wireless controller.

Amusingly enough, I was talking with two coworkers yesterday about gaming and PCs, and the one coworker asked the other, "Have your kids been asking for the new XBOX yet?" He responded, "No, they've been asking to build a PC. The games look a lot better."

I felt like there was a win in there for the PC Gaming Master Race. 😛

Remember, MS told you there would be no fee, they just left out the part where they bricked the disc, lol.

I'm not sure if you're talking about loaning a disc to a friend or trading it into Gamestop, but Microsoft said they wouldn't charge a fee when the game is traded in, but each publisher can set their own requirements. 😛

and if sony is smart, they would totally call this out in their keynote and talk about how they AREN'T doing it and be condescending about it, as if it would be any different, and rip into MS.

I think it'd be better if Sony's keynote was before Microsoft's, but unfortunately, I think Microsoft's is at 10 AM PST and Sony's is at 6 PM PST.

I don't think they care about the numbers because they don't understand the numbers. However, if the PS4 ends up being 30-40% faster than the X1, people should be able to see the difference in the games.

Whats sad.... I was on the fence about upgrading. Now... Its ONLY PS4... Possibly. Depending upon what they announce.

I dont leave my Xbox hooked up. I set it up, in the living room.... And play for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. I beat a game (Most recently the Mass Effect series), then it goes away, till I get the urge to play it again. I am a PC gamer first. The release yesterday that the console has to connect to the 'net once every 24 hours or else it cant play games............ Really? Buh Bye Xbox..... It was fun...

i agree with the 3rd bolded, but definitely not the first one. if people didn't care about used games, then gamestop wouldn't make the majority of their money off of the used game industry. always online internet is up in the air. they are totally alienating A LOT of potential customers though, as well as customers who aren't in the usa.

also now this means people can't use redbox for games, or use services like gamefly for x1 games. i think that is a much bigger deal than you realize, but only time will tell.

they obviously did market research on all of this and came to the conclusion that their decisions were for the better. however as a general consumer i strongly disagree.

The used game market is, well, used because it is there and cheaper. I highly doubt people will not buy a console because they can get whatever game for $5 less used at Gamestop. I have not seen a game that wasn't around that price less than the new version. I have yet to see a new game that was $60 and the used that was like $25 or less. That just doesn't happen often enough to be a real deal breaker. The majority of the time, games are around that $5 less mark for the used copy. That is how Gamestop makes so much money. I don't believe most gamers will care about that.

I agree the always online, or 24 hour phone home, requirement does alienate a lot of potential buyers and segments the market outside the US. But, I highly doubt MS sees a lot of Xbox sales happening in countries without stable internet. North America, the EU, and Asia are their primary targets. All of which have internet availability. I don't think MS cares that Ugandan children won't be buying the Xbox One or that North Koreans might buy a PS4 instead because they can't be online at least once a day.

MS has already stated they are working on a rental solution and it just won't be available at launch.

It has been quite awhile since I've used a Gamestop, but while working at one, they had like "20% extra trade in bonuses" and stuff like that. I don't recall any real deals for used games. That could be something fairly recent though.

People care about graphics but people also care about the wallet. One of my video cards buys a ps3 and a game with money left over. Also people in general are afraid of PC gaming. There is a false stigma or something that makes people think its either too expensive, too hard, a hassle or a combination.

If the graphics are better on one vs the other then it will eventually cause people to take notice. Especially if they start seeing really super good exclusives looking markedly better.

If people didn't care about graphics they would not be bashing the Wii U left and right over "its not next gen, its 5 year old hardware".

The used game fee will come from the developers, back in 2010 all the devs were pissed they were losing money hand over foot bc of used games. If Sony doesnt help devs in this aspect you might see a shift of devs making more for M$ over Sony.

Yeah...for GameStop it is all about how many copies they have on hand and how new the game is. I so wish they tried to offer a better perception of value for some of their used stuff. Saving $5 and getting a 10% off that with the membership card isn't enough a lot of times. Its only $10 and many would rather get it new for $10 more. If they started the pricing out with a higher discount off the new price it would be better from a consumer point of view.

devs don't lose money over used games. losing money would be someone coming and stealing money out of their bank accounts that they already had.

MS said that publishers can implement their own fees and if you even have the ability to sell the game. MS is leaving it up to the publishers so MS can say they have no fees.

ah okay, if they did i was not aware of that. where did they say this?

even with that, i don't think for a second that ea pulling their online pass means that sony is also implementing this. i think it means that they HAD to do this if they wanted to charge a fee on x1, because if they didn't remove it and charged a fee, they would be double dipping (hell it's triple dipping at this point).

Still some unknowns, but MS did say they wouldn't charge a fee for you to trade in your game, but they never said they wouldn't charge a fee to the retailer in some form, either be certification of the disc through MS system or a license fee tacked on to each used game sold. I am positive they will make money from it in some way. If they don't, great, still ridiculous this has to be even discussed.

Console gaming, use to be a simple thing. Buy game, stick game in machine play. Swap games with friends and play more games. Now there is so many damn hoops and shit.

They're doing the bare minimum necessary to make it appear as though used game sales are permitted, but in reality you will get even less value back than you currently do because there are no alternatives, and used game prices will go up because again, no competition.

I was TRYING to go along with everything else......
I get the "evils" of the used game market. I partake in it.
I get the backwards compataable issue....
And was trying to roll with all of it.
I could even LIVE with having to be conencted to play.

That rule, which is basically taking console attendance every 24 hours, is just STUPID.

But what I'm curious about is why the hate is so over the top for what MS is doing here but if you go to the PC forums it's (mostly) nothing but love for Valve and Steam.

because they are changing one of the very basic fundamentals that makes console gaming so great and convenient, and something that draws people to it over pc gaming.

also, steam has tons and tons of sales and most people get games for like $10 or $20 on steam. i can guarantee you that if people could get new release for $20 or $30 on xbox1 a week or two after launch, no one would care about the used market. but history shows us that is not the case.

since the beginning of time pretty much, or at least the past 15 years or so, pc gamers have been accustomed to the whole key/serial number thing, and not being able to resell it once it's used.

it's not just change. it is change for the worse. there is not 1 thing out of this whole change that benefits the end user. if there is, i'd like to hear how you can spin it as a positive.

they are basically saying 'this is the new way, and it sucks for you as an end user, but that is the way it is going to be so deal with it."
