The DRM thing seems to be a publisher push it looks like. It will probably show up on the PS4 and kind of explains why EA is turning away from the WiiU.

Oh wow. So much fail, and it's hilarious how the first paragraph is so sneakily worded.
We don't charge a 'platform fee'? Haha, all that says is that the actual fees collected by Microsoft using 'participating retailers' will be the money grab, not the actual running of the database. IOW, this is everything we expected : $$ will get kicked up the channel in order to transfer used games, unless you have a specific case, ONCE only, where you are given the opportunity to GIVE a game you PAID for to a friend.

So: no rentals or loans to friends. Only GameStop for buying used discs ("save $1 off list!"), and they'll have a monopoly on buying them back too ("we'll give you $1!").

Agreed. Its just gonna hurt that much more when they finally do. Should've pulled that and the PSN-charge bandaid off months ago.
The used game policy might be the same but I'm really wondering what their deal will be with the online checks.
In an interview the head PS dude said you don't 'need' to be always online but I'm wondering if there's some wordplay there like Microsoft's previous announcement.

If they are paying attention, they'll challenge Microsoft on both fronts. Think of the MASSIVE PR victory if they succeed in not hamstringing used/gifted games and not mandating paid PSN. The groundswell of support would be epic, and would almost single-handedly doom Xbone to last-place. Word of mouth would stamp out any residual support for Xbox outside of the hyper fanboys.
But you're right, if the bean-counters rule the day, and Sony follows suit on all this BS, then it's just gonna be status-quo, only worse.
Odds are fairly even at this point I'd say. You know they're watching the huge crapstorm about this Xbox garbage intently, watching stock values react, and might weigh the possible repercussions in a business sense.
Getting 20-40 million more consoles sold because your business model is hugely more consumer-friendly might sway them over the nickle and dime model that Microsoft is buying into.

Obviously this doesn't stop publishers from using keycodes and stuff to make used games less friendly, but by and large it doesn't sound like the epic mind-melting nonsense on Xbox : tying EVERY game to an XBL account, being able to only give friends your games ONCE after meeting strict criteria, etc.
And HUZZAH, no dumb-crap online requirement for offline gaming.

Yep, this crapstorm has been absolutely massive, and I think it's actually more likely that Microsoft will end up having to walk back some of the garbage on Xbone rather than Sony/Nintendo following suit in the middle of this mess.
But in the long run, this kind of thing will be inevitable, as this may well be the last gen of physically-distributed games. With purely electronic distribution, DRM as in games tied to your account will be the norm, which will be somewhat understandable (and what PC gamers largely live with already). The huge change that they tried to do all at once with Xbone looks like a bridge too far too fast though for the console crowd, the backlash has been stunningly epic.

To a certain extent. But this outrage is unprecedented. I have NEVER seen this outrage on consoles.
E3 used to be like a disney land ride for a 8 year old girl.
People are fucking angry now, that isn't good.
And in business, someone is always waiting for you to fail so they can take your spot.
