They have confirmed that you cannot upgrade or replace the HDD in an Xbone yourself. Google it, I'm not going to.

How else are you going to get it fixed? Go to Best Buy? Who in turn sends it to MS on your behalf? So you deal with a middleman with the same result and probably add more time to the transaction.

What other scenario are you concocting where you don't have to go to MS to get it replaced?

When you had a broken X360 after the RROD fiasco, did you have to send it to MS for a replacement or was there a magic X360 bunny that came to your house and did it for you?

On the plus side, at least your profile, games and gamesaves will all be saved to the cloud, so you'll lose absolutely nothing.
I can say I'd send it away to get fixed and do without for two weeks, but I'd most likely just go buy another one new and sell the fixed one on kijiji, like I did with the 360.

Do you have any actual data to support people are dropping broadband internet to pay MORE for SLOWER data with more stringent caps via cell phone companies? I highly doubt you do. But please continue to spout it as fact.

See above.

I'll wait for your apology.

thanks for telling me things i already knew, i appreciate it!

lucky for me the 20gb was big enough to last me since launch! pretty sure that the 500gb drive will be more than enough for me. i have a 500gb drive in my ps3 and it's a waste of empty space. i should have just kept my 60gb hdd in there that came with it.

it's just hilarious how fanboys try to make as many points as they can so their side can "win" the war! WHAT A SOLDIER!!

Um...you know you have to install games? My library would eat up terabytes of HDD space.

I'm glade you're in MS's pocket but be realistic.

thanks for the links, now we know!

it's also hilarious how you are making a big deal out of this, when in the 3rd article it has this...

According to Engadget, “hard drives in the Xbox One are non-user-serviceable,” though Microsoft senior director of product planning Albert Penello did confirm that the system’s USB 3.0 port will support external storage, “which can be used for everything the internal storage can be used for” (including game installs and downloads).

oh know i can't swap a new hdd in my x1 but i can plug one in usb instead! what will i ever do since i can't put it inside like the ps4 but i can do the same exact thing externally??!!

oh know!!!!

yes i know i have to install games. i have like probably close to 20 xbox360 games. i doubt even all of those could fit on a 500gb hard drive. i know the games are going to be bigger though, but if i run out of space on 500gb, i have 2 options.

1. plug in an external hard drive, which i have probably 2tb of external hdd's sitting around my house.

2. delete games that i haven't played in 4 years off of the hard drive.

either of those are a-ok with me.

I could be a d-bag and insult you, but I won't.

Facts :

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324682204578513262440196772.html?mod=dist_smartbrief

Btw, this article is May 29th, 2013, WSJ. I personally know about a half-dozen people with no home internet. Half of them are gamers.

1% of internet subscribers who do nothing but check email and use Facebook canceled their internet? Oh man! You sure got me. I highly doubt they are going to buy a PS4 or a Xbox One. And I love that the main reason was to save money. "So, in order to save a couple hundred bucks a year, I canceled my internet service, then I spent that money on an Xbox!!! #yeahimcoolhipstermaterial" And one of the people is a Wifi squatter. Even better!

It's lies. All hd's are serviceable by the end user once someone makes a program that can read/write/control it. The only thing stopping you is warantee invalidation which is out the window after (however long it is).

And again, come on man, it's about choice....has nothing to do with needing it or not. If you don't think you'll need it, so be it. Others do.

exactly, but...I still would like the option to just replace my internal HDD with a bigger one. USB, even USB 3.0 isn't as fast as SATA and after using SSDs for so long I am spoiled on load times lol.

Smack and Pure, give it up. We know you are getting an Xbox One and nothing anyone here is going to sway you. I really don't think anyone is even trying, but concerns are valid until proven otherwise.

The concerns that the failure rate of the HDD in the Xbox One is going to to be so bad it will actually effect consumers? Or the concern that a couple hipsters and penny pinchers are "cutting the cord" from their ISP?

We are discussing concerns that some people have, and some of them are rather stupid. Replacing the HDD might be a concern for some people. But, we don't know if it will void the warranty to replace it with a firmware modded, OEM model you paid half price for. In the Xbox 360 and the 360s, replacing the HDD did not void the warranty. It wasn't "supported" but I think anyone with the ability to replace an HDD, can probably plug it into their computer first and run a program to flash it. Although, I think I booted DOS to do it.

If the internal drive fails, it won't matter because the external drive won't have the software needed to boot the console up. You will still have to replace the internal HDD if it fails.

You are limited on xb1, like it or not.

PS4 will have both options, on xb1 you have one option.

It took that turn a long while back when people started trying to defend these new MS policies.

i don't see many people, if anyone, defending their policies in here.

it gets stupid when people who have no interest in the console come in here going LOL XBOX1 DRM HDD MASSIVE FAILURE LOLOLOL!!! just to troll. thing is, all of those points are valid and we've been discussing them for days, but there really isn't a need to come off as trollish.

i know it's hard for the fanboys to not do that though. it's very hard for them to think rationally about things.

yes, in the case that your internal hdd fails in either console, it will be easier to fix the problem on ps4.

based on my console history with an xbox, ps3, and xbox360, all having hard drive and none of them failing in the past 10 years, i'm not really concerned about the hdd failing in either my ps3 or xbox1. it will have no bearing on my decision to purchase either console.

lucky for me i am not basing my purchase of a next gen console on the "i can only have one or the other" like 90% of the people on these boards are doing. i can get both of them just as easily as neither of them.

HDD failure is just a possibility. I had both PS, Xbox, PS2, then PS3 and X360. However, I won't be owning both this time. MS has gone too far.

Irremovable HDD is just part of it - and one I hadn't seen talked about much, which is why I brought it up. Its just one more issue on top of a pile of issues why the orwellian Xb1 is a bane for consumers and I just thank god Sony didn't go down the same path

this is very remniscent of the ios vs android thing, one very closed platform vs one very open platform. and both of them are thriving greatly.

at the end of the day i'm a gamer, and i get consoles to play games. if any console has any games i want to play, i get it. i have allegiance to no companies.

My 40 GB PHAT PS3 HDD failed, I replaced it with a 200 GB and then a 500 GB later on.

It happens. You're experience isn't the be all and end all of consumer experiences. The fact that you allow MS to control you on this among the other things and see it as a non issue plants you firmly in that fan boy mode that you claim others of being.

You still don't get it. It is about consumer rights. I know we in the US are used to getting bent over by corporations but you need to wake up.

Not even close to the same thing. iOS doesn't keep the camera on 24/7 watching you, listening to you. There are maybe a couple comparisson's such as removable storage and removable battery but they are hardly comparable.

You sound like the MS chief that tried to correlate the XB1 with owning a cell phone saying "If you live in an area without cell service, why own a cell phone."

The difference is that the primary function of owning a cell phone is making phone calls. The primary function of a game system is gaming, not phoning home and all the other crap they have bundled the XB1 into being.

I have allegiance to no company either. Xb1 isn't a gaming console, it is being forced to be much more and failing miserably. If your primary goal was just the best "GAMING" system, you would be on board with the PS4 as the rest of us are.

I never got the fanboy basis to be honest. If a console has games I want, then so be it. Hell I owned DC, Xbox and PS2 all at the same time because they all had great games.

I owned neither last gen because I didn't feel the games justified the price. I was honestly hoping that would turn around this time, but MS made it 100x worse. People are railing against MS, even the Xbox fanboys...there's something to think about when your biggest fans now hate you.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. I used to own nintendo products. Then I went with the ps2. This gen I started with a xbox because I felt that Sony was too cocky for their own good, and they paid for it this gen. Next gen I am starting with the ps4, because now I feel that MS has gotten too arrogant for their own good. I have a feeling that they will draw the attention of some hacker groups and stuff like that, someone will try to knock them down a peg.

Whoa there Kemosabe, what's this "us" you're referring to? My not liking the direction MS went is in no way an endorsement of Sony.
