I doubt it. If they planned an always online system, the interface would be tailored to that I'd imagine. A lot of the core features might require it. If that was the case, they would have to redesign it almost completely. That would either be rushed and awful, or take time. MS wouldn't risk sending out something awful. They know whoever launches first wins this time, unless they have some killer feature.

It makes sense for them to wait for Sony to show their cards first. That way, they can 1 up them. "Oh we have <feature x and feature y> that is better than <PS4 feature x and feature y>"
I heard something very different on another site about them being able to change, so I guess we will see if that comes true. And I don't know how they could hear what Sony will reveal and one up it at this point, with it being just 7 months until the supposed release of the console.

i read that too from some site can't remember. they claimed that ms could release with this "always on" thing then patch it motnhs later with a fw update if it was doing poorly.

apparently everyone is now an xbox720 expert and knows more about it than microsoft does, including some people in this thread.

Sure, it can be changed. But I doubt MS is going to go the dual development route. If they wanted to release it always online, they would have tailored it to be the best experience. Which means using the online aspect to its advantage. This can't juts be patched out without actually redesigned a lot of the features or just removing them. MS knows better than to do that. At this point, they are pretty much locked into the major features. And Sony has already revealed the PS4 and gave their selling points. MS can tailor their marketing and presentation to counter what Sony has revealed.

LOL, have you seen Windows 8?

But I agree with purbeast, it's pointless to speculate on this, we just have to wait for real info from the launch event.

Yes, i have seen Windows 8. And unlike the troglodytes who still want to be on XP, understand it is a better operation system than Windows 7. It takes all of a single click to get out of the metro ui. There is no forcing of AppStore use and no blocking of sideloading programs a certain fat, loudmouth, HL3 not giving asshat cried about and is too proud to take back.

Given how hardware has matured...I don't see how they differentiate themselves from Sony. Both company's CPU and GPU's are made by AMD, right?

$300-$500 seems way too high also. I don't think you'll see a big rush to upgrade compared to when the 360 first came out or the PS2. People I think will be pretty content with their existing machines for a long time.

Current gen all CPUs were made by IBM. All 3 consoles used an IBM based CPU. IBM won the console wars.

New news about the "always online" This rumor looks to be something that may calm some people down. http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/4208970/next-xbox-tv-entertainment-plans
Edit: Whoops, I linked the wrong story, but now my work is blocking the other one I tried to link. This was the exerpt from it on another forum:

"Getting to the point there are going to be two console as part of the redesigned “Xbox Line” of products. A repackaged and reoriented Xbox 360 unit and the new “Durango” gaming console, both designed to compete with more than Sony in gaming, but against Apple as well.

When the Durango (game machine) launches, it will not support backwards compatibility for 360 games out of the box. Instead, this functionality will come from the other unit that will be networked with the Durango to provide this (not unlike the DVD add-on for the original Xbox).

The purpose of the smaller Xbox unit is to compete with Apple TV, but also provides XBLA and 360 game support which will give it an edge over Apple TV. The rumors of “always online required” comes from the smaller Xbox unit which may not have a disc drive and like Apple TV it would require a network connection and internet to provide any real functionality. It may be possible they will design both consoles to be stackable.

Durango itself will also always be online like any other device (correct with rumors), but it will not be a requirement to play local content and it will not prevent playing used games."

While I agree we can't say for sure since it is all rumor and speculation still. But at this point with every leak from reputable sources, that ass clown that is working on MS saying he wants everything to be always on, and MS' silence on such a negative issue is really pointing to true.

I have 2 ways of seeing this. If it is true, I hope it fails so damn horribly that this doesn't even cross any other manufactures head as an idea for a long time to come. If it isn't true, great we avoided that.

The worse case is, it is true and the system does well. The initial batch of launch systems will sell out regardless, so a few million will sell real quick. I just hope that after that, it starts to slump badly and fails. MS will get sales from the the unknowing public that simply don't know about always online and after this the public will mostly know what always online is at least. They will also get sales from people who don't give a shit about anything outside of their own world because their internet never goes out and from the MS fans that will probably buy anything they put out at this point.

As for Kinect 2, ugh wish it DIAF but whatever. That camera is going to data mine so much info for MS it is going to be disgusting and I can only hope people wake up and are a product for MS and not the other way around.

Kind of curious why they'd reveal it before E3. If they waited, they could pretty much drown out everyone else there, especially if they have a good show. By announcing so close to E3 they take away most of the punch and won't actually have anything new or interesting saved up to talk about at E3. That and they will have completely tipped their hands to Sony, who will have enough time to shape their E3 message to whatever they want.

It was supposed to be revealed this month but they pushed it back, presumably to make the announcement even better than Sony's. I also think them pushing it back hurts them as well.

Out of curiosity, when you do the whole subscription thing for the XBOX, can you just use those cheap, $35 (on sale) cards or do you have to pay for it monthly?

PS3(& 4?) - Don't pay to use services like Netflix, MLB.tv, etc.

360 (and next gen) - You do have to pay for those services.

No thanks to paying to use them on top of the service itself.

I don't think they want to share the spotlight of E3, with game reveals and stuff like that with the announcement of the new console. Announce it before and maybe show a little bit so people are talking about it, then really come out with everything at E3.

Bingo. E3 there are so many announcements and stuff going on, MS wants everyones attention solely on them when they announce the new system. Sony is going to probably unload fully at E3 as well and that would take a lot of thump out of MS' announcement as well.

It's rumored that Sony will also have a conference in May, possibly to reveal the box. I don't think that Sony waiting and showing the console at E3 makes them the "winner", but at the end of the day I could care less who wins the conference.

I was finally able to get that link, so here is the full story.
http://www.vgleaks.com/microsoft-xbox-roadmap-2013/

what are the sources for this info?

and this...

The development kits required several pieces of hardware as to combine all “potential” hardware which may or may not be required to work with each other, which also includes the potential for any or all devices to required a network connection, which is where most of the “required” rumors are coming from.

is what i've been saying all along. as well as if the retail console is "always on" that it means it will simply be able to connect to patches/updates without you being there and always in standby mode. not that you have to have it online all the time to play solo games.

You can just use the cards. You only pay monthly if you choose that options, input your credit card / paypal info, and have no time from cards on your account. If you just buy the yearly, 3 month, 1 month cards and input them in, you never have to "subscribe." I leave the option turned on for my account so if I do forget to buy a new XBL card, I never lose service.

i think he's talking about the subsidized 360 subscription plan - where you pay like $99 for the console but must be a member of live for 2 years at a rate of $15/mo.

and no you cannot use the live cards for that plan during the 2 years, but i'm not sure about afterwards if you can keep the 360 with your own live subscription, or if you have to continue to use their $15/mo service or give it back.

It would be like cellphones. What happens after 2 years? Phone is yours and you can upgrade to a newer model for a different price. Probably after the 2 years you go month by month or use the cards.

Oh, yeah. You can probably enter the cards, but it will just add onto the 2 years of live you signed up as a contract for.

I am curious how they will handle people who break the contract or just don't pay. I imagine there will be an ETF type of thing, but that doesn't stop people. They can just choose not to pay. If you already have bad credit, what is another ding? At least with phones, they can lock them or not allow you to activate them. With XboxLive, couldn't you just do the subsidized priced, not pay, and make a new account with the cheaper XBL yearly cards?

Easy, lock the console via the serial number. If it has to be always online to work it will check the serial number when you startup and tell you to pay up. This could easily be done if they wanted.

They were able to ban systems from Xbox live for hacking and modding. They could easily have the system do a startup check if they require you to be constantly connected. Or they could simply inject a code when you cancel that locks it until you pay an etf. No pay, system doesn't function. It seems harsh but there is a reason they gave you the system at a discounted retail price to begin with.
