In a world where tvs, dvd players, set top boxes, all have Netflix, etc, as well as media servers built-in, what's the point of this new xbox ?

The name of the new xbox answers your question. Or at least that's apparently Microsoft's hope here.

If anything, they will "verify" somehow that the first installation of a disc is, in fact, the first. And you can use it without the physical media in your drive. The next installations that are not on consoles tied to your account, will require the disc.

This "feature" would almost work like SC's spawn system, and you can loan your game to a friend to play.

The requirement that it is installed is so they don't have to take 50gb of data on an 8x (guessing on this one) blu-ray drive. That would be loud, slow, and annoying all around.

there is absolutely no possible way to do this with optical media if the consoles aren't online.

Here are the Wired articles...
Article: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/05/xbox-one/
Photos: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/05/xbox-one-development-photos/

As for that fee, what about multiple consoles and multiple users in one home? If I want to share my games with my significant other and she wants her own account, does she have to pay again? ...or does she have to use the disc to play? The current XBOX DRM scheme ties purchases to the console or the account, so a single console with multiple accounts would be fine; however, multiple accounts and multiple consoles would not.

What $20 battery pack? Are you talking about the terrible Play-n-Charge pack? The rechargeable battery in that thing was just really bad. I use the standard AA battery pack with Sanyo Eneloops, and it works great!

The current DRM scheme ties DLC to a console AND the purchasing account. The console it is downloaded on, any account can use it, and the account that purchased it can download it on any other account AND use it, but if they are not logged in, it does not allow the other accounts to use it.

Yes, I was referring to those battery packs you have to purchase. They work fine, unless you leave them plugged in with the awful plug and play cable, which destroys the battery.

Wired are f***ing idiots.

Please refrain from cursing in the technical forums.

Thank you.

Looking at this photo from Wired, I'm guessing that is probably the battery or the compartment where the battery is. So, it probably won't be fully contained like the PS3.

EDIT:

Yeah, that's what I mean. It requires you to be on the same console or the same account, hence why I said a single console with multiple accounts would be fine.

You really don't need to explain to the guy with four 360s how the XBOX DRM works. :p

Well that was boring.

The game trailers hardly showed anything. Mostly CGI or real world stuff and maybe a second or two of game play.

That box looked very big but I hope I am wrong.

Didn't really say much about the hardware, 8GB of what type of RAM? That is the clock speed of the processor? I didn't think Sony had a good press conference but it was way better than this one. And to think this one was delayed so they could improve it. I'd hate to see what the previous one looked like.

It is removable and you can use AA (or AAA, I honestly don't know) batteries instead. The previous comments were about MS trying to "cash in" on bad integrated batteries by making us buy new controllers.

I think it looks good. I am not a huge fan of the controller, but it looks similar enough it should be just fine.

Yeah, HDMI in and out is nice. An overlay or at least passthrough to a "snapped" screen would be cool.

I just WISH WISH WISH the NFL would do a Sunday Ticket subscription service for any console without having to have DirecTV. Sadly, I can't get a dish in my complex and that is the only reason I buy TV. =(

Hmm this little bit (from Wired) about the multiplayer sounds good if it's true:

stable, dedicated servers for every multiplayer game rather than the notoriously fragile practice of hosting matches on one participant’s console; even multiplayer matches that can grow to 64, even 128 participants, rather than the usual limit of 16 or 32.

EDIT:

Kinect sounds a bit better too:

This time around, a 1080p camera enlarges the sensor’s field by 60 percent—a fact that the entertainment division’s lanky hardware guru, Todd Holmdahl, demonstrates for me by walking his 6′ 4″ frame toward the sensor. Even 3 feet away, the Kinect’s onscreen display clearly registers his entire body, and he still has room to lift his hands above his head.

It kind of looks like the old PS3 to me in a way.

I think tying the console so closely to TV and advertising that is sort of dumb. Not every kid will have cable in their room. Plus, who knows how the landscape of TV will change in a few years. I don't even have traditional TV service anymore.

A huge lack of games, but maybe they are showing more at E3?

The third OS is a virtual machine that allows developers to stick things onto. No idea what he means with that. It stays on all the time.

They are definitely going deep into this stuff. For those that like hardware talk, you should listen to this

Switching to dedicated servers is good. Especially with the extra processing power being able to actually rending 64+ players on screen at once.

From what I have read so far (which hasn't been nearly as much as I want due to work internet restrictions) is it will function similarly to how DirectX functions. You have the Xbox OS layer which lets you code direct to the metal, the Windows OS which lets you code apps, and the "developer layer" that allows you to interface between the two.

Whhhhyyyy blocked at work?!? I am thinking of just leaving so I can actually look at some of this stuff. =(

It's at www.twitchtv.com/xbox if you can load that up or load it up on your phone.

Anand remarked that it sounds like Hypervisor, which makes sense. Hypervisor is a hardware or software implementation that allows you to segment different operating systems on the same hardware.

Don't you have a phone you can use to view those pages? That's what I do.

I wonder if that new EA engine will make the sports games look and play all that much better or if it's just hot air?

I think they might have some integrated streaming, as they have a Twitch.tv app for the 360 already. To what extent? That is unknown, but I'm sure E3 will offer more.

Yeah, and Sony's explicit use of UStream as their streaming partner makes me think that Twitch.tv was already signed up with the other guys. I think that's an excellent feature for the PS4 so I'd love to see it also on the Xbox.

Can you link to Anandtechs coverage? I can't see it.
