I don't know if this would be needed or if it's even available in LANMAN's area, but Big Lots has pine wood shelves, 5 shelves - 71" x 36" x 13" (includes hardware, assembly required) for $19.99 + Tax. I'm thinking you could fit 10 of the motherboards and maybe the switch underneath per shelf unit....?

Possible?

Wow, a lot of posts since last night. Feel like I'm slacking behind! (Thanks for covering me networkman)

I worked all day yesterday until 10pm then a few hours of sleep, came back in at 12:00a until 4am to work on the servers, then back to work at noon. Whew..

I have another PIII 700 Xeon server coming in at the end of the month. Guaranteed it will be running SETI 24/7. :D

I just picked up one of the Big Lot's shelves for myself, and it seems ideal (IMO) for a rack! :)

It's solid, pre-drilled and includes all the screws/hardware to assemble. May even stain it to make it purdy! :p

Maybe a few more could donate a few dollars to pick up a few of these ;)

(Please! :D)

BigLot's Locator

You can view any local Big Lot's location and also the sales flyer for that location at the above link. The shelf is on page #3 of my local flyer.

Good Luck! :)

Two Mobo's on one Power Supply...for the rack people ;)

Yeah that is one way to do it ;) When I did mine for the BP6s (I don't use it anymore because I needed the 350W PSU for my XP1600 ;):p) But what I did was to open the PSU and solder a whole new lead to the board. My thoughts were that the cheap wire used in those leads weren't sufficient to handle the load of 2 boards so stole a lead from a burned out PSU and soldered that guy right in.

He is right about the #17 lead. Make sure you disconnect it on 1 of the 2 leads ;) Also his "grey" wire I think is lead #3 which I also disconnected on one of the leads. I'll check tonight to make sure it is lead #3.

I wish I had pics but I don't :( ...yet;) When I get an extra PSU I'll do it again. I'd do it to ones I already have but I doubt it'd power a 1.33 T-bird and an XP chip :(

Alright, I have a little bit of time to keep everyone updated:

BEOWULF's new home is getting fit with new electrical outlets in a few days. While the contractors are working on that, I will start getting a idea on how to assemble the mobo's that have arrived with the shelf unit. (Found a spare already in the basement :D ).

I haven't used the pay pal money yet, but it will come in handy for the second shelf in a few weeks.

Thanks Migroo for your contribution!! Very much appreciated!!

That's all for now...

I have two boxes of CAT5 already on order for a project I have to do in a few weeks, so I'm sure there will be plenty left over. :D

That's a good price though...

Cool project - when are we gonna start seeing some pictures? :)

Have you decided anything about what distro you're gonna run? Still need a sysadmin? I've set up quite a few RH kickstart servers & would gladly donate my config files.

Out of everything we still need motherboards and CPU's; Donations were given 32, 64, and 128Meg sticks, but I don't have anything to put them in. (Yet... :) )

For all those BP6 users out there.. still using it?

;)

Nexsusnine,

I'll shoot some pic's later this weekend for ya!

Meanwhile, I'm off to Fargo to scope out more material for the rack. (It's been a little busy at the office these last few weeks. :( )

That is what we have...but I think Networkman has the rest of the power supplies and the NICs.....but I would verify that with him first! :)

Hey nwm...you got some stuff too? :)
