"Wierd! with a faster cache & better FPU you would think the PII would be better! ,I know it is at SETI (which counts the most)"
Yeah, I was looking at some of the old Anand articles and saw this. PII was faster at all other resolutions though.

"What does the MMX mean on that prosessor name?"
Read About it here: http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci212581,00.html

You may want to check out this site once in a while: https://www.gsaauctions.gov. They are always auctioning off tons of old equipment. Check out the "Central Processing Unit" auction in Penn. 9 old IBM comps, 8x17" monitors and 1x20" monitor for $10.

Can someone list again what is still needed? I have some stuff I could get rid of, if all I had to do was ship it to someone.

Thanks,
Scott

I just looked at those CPUs at the GSA Auction klah and I can tell you right now they top out at a 233MMX with 128meg of ram.

This past week I was on "vacation" helping do a networking project on the side - I worked with LOTS of those exact same IBM units, so I know the specs pretty well.

For the time being we only need CPU's and compatable motherboards for those CPUs donated. All the other parts donated will put together at least 7 systems.

Look at the auction in Minnesota; Lot 61FBPI02074388: ($500)
PII-233 x 36
PII-300 x 21
PII-350 x 15
PII-450 x 1

I know you are looking for higher end procs than these (500MHz+), but you may want to check out the site once a month and see if anything useful shows up.

edit: this was in reply to Mardeth

It is an auction and the current price is $505.
Check it out here: https://www.gsaauctions.gov/index.jsp.
Computer Equipment->Minnesota->"Misc IBM CPUS".

The price may end up being higher, but sometimes there are really good deals there.

*** HOT OFF THE PRESS ***

Alright everyone,

After hours (more like days) of planning and preparation, I just left the fabrication company with high spirits!! I should have the CAD designs and costs in my hand some time early next week. The engineers, that were assisting the draftsman, kept commenting on how easy this project would be to put together once the blue prints were finished. That would mean we wouldn't be waiting a long time for the first one to roll off the press! :D

** DETAILS **

Here's what we're looking at:

One steel or stainless steel cabinet capable of holding 6 (six) motherboards vertically with the power supplies behind it. Each motherboard will be on it's own shelf, held in by hard plastic runners for shelf support. I added a feature on all the shelves to be able to bolt down one shelf unit on top of another incase we need to go to 12 some time soon. (Hint, hint) The stainless will cost a bit more, obviously, because it doesn't rust or we can save the money and paint them. (I'm thinking of going stainless myself, unless they really jack the price up)

I don't have any pic's yet, but when the proto-type comes out you will be the first to see them! Heck, I can't wait to see it myself! :D
I'll will have a separate shelf dedicated to Soccerman which should give me enough room to put his name on it.

A second idea, which will be at my expense, is creating the "Enterprise" sign for the top of the unit. There happens to be a graphic sign store right next to the fabrication company. (How convenient!!) Anyone object to a camouflage color?

That's the latest! I hope everyone is just as excited as I am, because this is going to be :cool:COOL!!! (And yes this has already been submitted to the lawers for "Pat. Pending" :p ;) )

I have some network cards that I'd like to put towards the cause. 5 Intels and a netgear. I also have a 250W ATX power supply (that's enough for dual celery right?)

link <-- if you can use these I'll pull my FS thread.

Edit: is there anyone in charge of donations I shoud PM?

Nice to hear. I will definitely want to see what this looks like. :)

Still waiting to hear back from the supplier after the last e-mail I bothered him with. :(

I might be able to get a dual Slot 2 Xeon board (no processors) that i stripped out of an old server at work on Thursday.

My line manager is gonna speak to the shop manager about it, and maybe sort out a price for me :)

This will be donated if i can get it :)

Should be finding out on Monday/Tuesday :)

If Confused can get the dual Xeon board - I volunteer to acquire some processors for it - at least 1meg cache for each. :)
