Its what made the console viable. Without Wii Sports at launch, I dont think it would have sold nearly as well. People 50 or older wanted a Wii to play Wii Sports.

You would think there would be more 1st party games for launch. Why Sony didn't have The Last of Us, next version of GT, and Uncharted game, something, ready at launch is beyond me. I guess they think Killzone is a big deal. At least MS has Forza.

2 reasons Sony didn't.
1. Install base.
2. Support.

Sony supports their systems for quite awhile, and seeing amount of exclusive games coming out this year for the PS3 (and all are high quality at that) does instill consumer confidence that their product will be supported for the long term. They could of stopped working on PS3 titles 2 years ago to get ready for launch of the PS4 making all the exclusives for the new system but they didn't, makes current fans happy and gives possible new fans confidence.

We all know the PS4 is going to have a lot of exclusive titles, the amount of studios Sony owns and content they put out ensures that.

A guy at work told me today that GameStop told him to arrive on Thursday at 6 pm and they are giving out reserve stickers for ps4s. I plan on hitting up target at 8:00 am on Friday on the off chance I can snag another ps4 ;)

I was told at my local gamestop that there will be 15 available but they do expect them to sell on thursday evening since they have been telling people they will have a few extra if they want to try standing in line.

I was told "avoid the rush and hassle man, just come in after work on Friday and pick it up. You have everything paid for anyway. We have 15 extras coming so all the reserves are taken care of. Everyone who put money down will have one."

That plus the fact it is completely impossible to play the game anyway! Amazon sold out of killzone in the past hour or two. Ps2 is the only console I ever bought near launch. I recall paying $400 as well and that was 12 years ago!

Ugh...! Since I have the code that lasts until Saturday, I wanted to wait to see the reviews for the games, and now I'm just going to end up being stuck with a single game. How lame!

ND is owned by sony but they had already spent a considerable amount of time on the ps3 game and would not be able to retool it for ps4 in time. Also the install base matters quite a bit.

Was at GameStop today on the way home and it appears as if many stores will have a few extra ps4s on launch. Any left over not sold by Saturday though will be sent to the busiest store in the district.

My understanding is that naughty Dog's B team is the one that made The Last of Us. They could have had one do a PS3 version, and had the A team work on the PS4 version with extended story or something, or have the A team work on something new. Its not like they decided to launch the PS4 this year, they have known about the new console for a long time.

Or Sucker Punch should have had Infamous 2 ready for launch. Sony has enough studios that they can have more than one 1st party AAA launch title.

They have been working it on for a long time sure but they had been working on the game for around 2 years if I remember correctly.

yeah, it is pretty sad that killzone is the only "first party AAA" launch title for ps4 when the ps3 had so many awesome single player AAA titles for it. but they will all come in due time.

but then again, xbox1 doesn't have much either as far as exclusives go. if i wasn't a killer instinct nut, i don't know if i would be buying xbox1 at launch.

but then again, neither have many console launches since the N64 with Mario 64.

This is the first console launch with games on both systems I really want since the GameCube and original Xbox back in 2001 gave me Halo and Star Wars Rogue Squadron. I remember playing Halo at the Xbox Retail conference that summer and I knew I had to have it. I had always been a fan of Bungie and wondered what happened to that project.

I actually did get a Genesis shortly after launch and I had Altered Beast and Ghouls 'n Ghosts, both of which I played to death. Not great, but as a dumb kid I loved them. That was the only console I owned close to launch. I bought my Playstation pretty late and even then I only played Hockey on it.

I may be undervaluing BF4 for the next gen consoles since I think of it as a PC game. I was talking to my manager, and he was getting a PS4 just for BF4 with no other launch games. He's looking forward to playing it the way I have been describing BF for all these years, not how it is on PS3. And if Watch Dogs was ready on launch, most people probably wouldnt even notice the lack of first party AAA titles.

Ahh, Altered Beast...I remember you well.

I do remember getting a Genesis at launch myself. Got an NES way late and my father thought upgrading to the more powerful system was wiser than investing in games for the old console. I then ended up with a SegaCD at launch, 32x at launch, SNES I got late, PSOne I got a couple years late, Saturn I bought after it failed, Dreamcast I got about 6 months late, PS2 I got at launch, Xbox and Gamecube I got at launch, I bought an N64 later used to play Zelda, 360 a month or so after launch, PS3 about 3 months after launch, Wii I bought once Super Mario Galaxy arrived.

Wow, nice run of consoles! I never actually owned an NES or SNES, or any Nintendo console for that matter, I just always played at my friends houses (we were very poor). It let me get my Zelda, Mario, and Street Fighter fixes though. I never got to play any of the other Sega consoles, except for Sega CD whick I liked, but barely remember. I actually loved my buddy's TuboGrafx, but it was not one I ever owned.

Oddly I have owned every Playstation console.

I think the PS4 will be the first major console in 25 years I haven't gotten at launch. My favorite is still the Dreamcast. A NAOMI board with a controller port! Yes, please.

Meh, decided just to buy Killzone and Need for Speed anyway. I figured that Assassin's Creed will be on Steam (you can buy a Steam or uPlay code from Amazon), but Need for Speed most likely will not be on Steam.

EDIT:

One other nice thing is that the PC version of Assassin's Creed 4 does have access to Sony's exclusive 60 minutes of content... or at least it does according to Amazon's description of the PC Download - Gold Edition.

Killzone "Tech Trailer" for anyone interested(don't forget to change to 1080p). It'll be interesting to see how far they will be able to push these things in the next few years.

I like most of the effects, the lighting and the art design. But holy Jesus Christmas, the post-processing effects are disgusting. The "before" image is too crisp, sure, but the bloom and lens flare are dialed up to 11 and make it look like a layer of vaseline has been smeared over the camera. I can live with that, but then they throw in the cinematic color grading and depth of field so that all these vibrant colors become a dreary shade of gray and the background completely disappears in an indeterminable miasma. Oh, orange lights, red eyes, yellow buildings? These would look better in a dull gray pallette, right? What the hell? The before image looked pretty good, the after image looks awful. Why are they using this in a tech demo? "See how completely we've scrubbed all fine detail and art direction through a liberal use of our 'Call of Battlefield' filter..." Yuck.

I dunno, I think it looks pretty incredible. Especially for a console.

I agree. As soon as they washed away the cool orangey-yellow lights in the background, I was a sad panda. I thought that looked awesome, then it went all grey. :(

I don't mind it but it does look smeared at one point. They are pretty good for a console. I dunno I used to be like wow that looks great but after I built my pc I really am not impressed with graphical differences anymore.

If you watch the gameplay videos for killzone, none of the scenes look like the tech demo they show you. I think they are just showing their effects put to use in the most extreme cases and not actually how they use these effects.
