Its what made the console viable. Without Wii Sports at launch, I dont think it would have sold nearly as well. People 50 or older wanted a Wii to play Wii Sports.
You would think there would be more 1st party games for launch. Why Sony didn't have The Last of Us, next version of GT, and Uncharted game, something, ready at launch is beyond me. I guess they think Killzone is a big deal. At least MS has Forza.
2 reasons Sony didn't.
1. Install base.
2. Support.
Sony supports their systems for quite awhile, and seeing amount of exclusive games coming out this year for the PS3 (and all are high quality at that) does instill consumer confidence that their product will be supported for the long term. They could of stopped working on PS3 titles 2 years ago to get ready for launch of the PS4 making all the exclusives for the new system but they didn't, makes current fans happy and gives possible new fans confidence.
We all know the PS4 is going to have a lot of exclusive titles, the amount of studios Sony owns and content they put out ensures that.
