That's completely a completely different feature. It sounds like what they're talking about you can pause a game, turn console "off" (ie standby) then come back and boot right into your game without any startup screens or anything. It's the same thing the Vita does.

That has nothing to do with background downloads

I think that sounds like suspend. Standby will not put you right back into your game. Oh and today I tried downloading the fifa demo but psn was undergoing maintenance so maybe that's why the download wasn't done.

Keep in mind that Assassin's Creed IV is still locked to 30 FPS.

Well, it's certainly better than the performance I was getting in AC3 on the PC. Game was so poorly optimized, it required a lot of tweaking to get running consistently above 25fps, even on dual 6580s.

I believe that the low power state downloading feature isn't there yet.

Nope, it's there. I've used it already. It's the suspend/resume feature that was left out of launch.

I've noticed the fan keeps running when I did the standby download. I was really hoping it could do so silently.

IIRC, for doing standby downloading, it's drawing 70 W, so clearly the fan would need to be running. Yes, I don't know why it's that high.

Yeah it's on while in standby but it's not that loud. I only hear it if I'm very close to the system.

What is his story? I mean...he mentions his weight and his inability to travel a lot. I don't know what I may have missed in his backstory and maybe he never really came out and told us his story. Did he have something happen medically or perhaps some type of accident that changed his life and then he used youtube to be his connection to the world?

Anyone know?

Abuse and depression will do that to a person I guess.

i gotta be pretty near the end of knack. i might have time to finish it up tonight. it definitely is starting to feel more repetitive now, but i'm still having fun. it's a fun solid launch title, but if it was out later on, i bet it wouldnt get a 2nd look from anyone. it kind of reminds me of kameo for 360 at launch, as far as the fun meter goes for me.

I can clarify for people on some of this Standby stuff, since I got a PS4 last Friday (I have no self control, I guess):

What I noticed on Standby was that it's louder when a download is in progress vs if one is not. I did a little research on it, and it seems like the primary APU needs to be active for a standby download. This effects power draw as well, so instead of 10w, it's going to be at around 65w IIRC, if a download is in progress.
- When standby is running in it's low power state, it's fan noise is practically silent
- The Standby indicator light color is a nice gold

Standby closed out my suspended games in some tests I did, so that sorta sucked...

And finally....
When I attempted to connect to the PS4 with the Playstation Android app, while the system was in standby, it seemed to crash it! So apparently, don't do that, I guess? (I was hoping it'd turn the PS4 on, but I guess not).

Somewhat obvious, but the Controllers do charge in standby, and will wake the system up if you push the PS Button.

Since it's somewhat related, I did some tests on the Suspend game feature, and multitasking.

- I was able to run a game and the web browser side by side, with fast switching between them (press the PS button twice to swap to the last app).

When I went from a Game into Netflix, I noticed that the PS4 considered Netflix a heavy app, not a light one (like the browser), and needed to suspend the game. The PS4 annoyingly gave me a notification that it was suspending the game too. I tried to find a way to disable the unnecessary notification, but it wasn't an option yet. Hopefully they'll allow us to disable that notification in the next patch.

Suspending the game happened pretty darn quickly tho, and then Netflix loaded up... So I then swap back to the game, and it loaded up pretty much instantly. The was almost no delay in un-suspending the game, whatsoever... it was as if it was already running.

I tested suspending Trine 2, Resogun, and Contrast, and it was the same sort of experience each time. Stupid suspension notification, suspends in just a moment, other app opens, then switching back is almost instantaneous.

So, uhm, neat. The functionality could certainly have some improvements, but what's already up and running, is a definite step forward from last gen consoles

The ps app will turn your ps4 on if you have it connected before you put it in standby. I was able to establish connection on my WiFi, put the console in standby, and then was able to issue commands with the app without any issues. I suspect that crash was random.

@sze5003

Yeah, it was something of a random crash... Putting the system into standby from the PS App worked OK for me, but powering it back on created one of the few crashes I witnessed, so I'm going to avoid powering my PS4 on that way for the time being.

The other crash I had, if anyone's curious, was when I opened my browser with a SUPER flakey wireless connection to a wireless access point that was repeatedly dropping my connection. The combination of the browser trying to access the internet, and the connection repeatedly dropping, then connecting again, seemed to be enough for the system to completely lock up.

I turned off the PS4 instead of leaving it on standby which would have updated the games automatically with the latest patches while on standby, but right when I turned on the system, it automatically started downloading Killzone and Assassin's Creed games updates for me which was cool.

I'm always curious...how was/is the network holding up?

Lightning fast and rock solid for me so far.

One thing though, are there zero demos available right now? I was looking in the store and could not find a single one, but maybe I am just not looking in the right place?

My downloads are sooooo slow. Dunno what's up with that. Slower than ps3. Otherwise the rest of the system seems good. About as loud as a ps3 slim.

I'm surprised that you've been having issues with the PSN. My only issue was logging in on launch day. Once I got in, I had excellent download times for Resogun and Contrast. A matter of a few minutes and both were downloaded. I was rather shocked considering the heavy load I'm sure it was under.

As for the noise issue.... I placed it vertically and it's now virtually silent. The feet on the system are too short IMO, causing the system to heat up.

FIFA has a demo! Gotta search for it though.

Interesting. Mine happens to be sitting on top of my Xbox 360 Elite, which due to its hourglass shape leaves a lot of space under the bottom of the PS4 - maybe this is why my PS4 has been totally silent (as far as I can discern) so far.

Same here man. I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it is a setting in the router we need to turn on or off? Ps3 was not this slow at downloading stuff and it was also running on WiFi. A 760mb files takes about 2-3 on the pc but 23 minutes on the ps4.

Oh and it was mentioned but it helps if you have the ps4 sitting on something. I don't have an entertainment center so it sits on top of a book below my small table. I may pick up a vertical stand later but for now it has been very quiet.

Surprised it's that little. That Sony can make a profit, or at least break even, at $399 is really good for them. It means they will be able to lower prices in the future if they need, as costs come down.

I wonder what the XB1 costs, though. It could be no more than this. The hardware is inferior, but it comes with a Kinect--though there is no way in hell that costs $100 to make. No way at all.

The kinnect costs probably about 50-60 bucks to make. Same reason iPad costs $271 to manufacture and they sell it at $499 for a profit. For that amount you can get a full laptop pretty much.
