Feels good to have called it on the version number/naming scheme.

I still wouldn't object to a Z1 GPe, though. But it does appear that Google took the camera more seriously this time around.

Yes true. I don't get bad battery life with my N4 surprisingly. I'm just hoping the LTE / Snapdragon 800 balance each other out and doesn't rape the battery.

Yeah my N4 wasn't bad, but the difference is that my Note 2 was awesome. Hence why I'm probably going Note 3 this round.

Verizon insisted on doing their own QC testing before releasing Google's OTA's.

They rejected several OTA's for bugs because Verizon didn't want buggy OTA's going out to their customers. Verizon would have to deal with the complaints by passing the buck to Google--or swapping for a different model--and they didn't want to have to do that.

It's understandable on Verizon's part, and in the end, Verizon's way was not Google's way, so no more Verizon Nexus.

Too bad, so sad. (Because I wouldn't mind a nice Nexus 5 to go with my unlimited Verizon LTE.)

The only bug that comes to mind is the December issue in 4.2.1. It's possible that there were others when it came to interacting with the proprietary hardware in the CDMA GNex, though. This whole Verizon looking out for us just sounds bogus, especially considering how awful the radios are in the GNex.

But on the flip side, I don't think Verizon is losing any sleep over buggy iPhone updates that cause Exchange to go haywire or alarm clocks to not work. Just let Google do their thing, it'll be no different.

I'm fine with Google ditching Verizon, especially since I'll be doing the same. My area is covered, but over capacity. My LTE comes in no faster than 10 Mbps. HSPA+ is twice that, and T-Mo actually has LTE in my market. And I'll be saving 50 bucks a month.

Is this all you do? Just attack? When ANY consumer states wishes, isn't that entitlement? I'm saying I'd like for a fully featured flagship Nexus. I'm not saying it HAS to be $299. Would it be nice? Sure. Would it be nice if they sold it at cost? Yeah, but understanding that a flagship is closer priced to $599, I don't mind paying that if it's a flagship.

On the other side you have people whining for a $299 phone. Isn't that entitlement? Who says you're entitled to a phone or any device NEAR cost when the rest of the industry rakes in huge profits?

Once again I never asked for $299 pricing. I'm more concerned with having a flagship phone. My stance is this kind of pricing is toxic given that ODM's can't compete at that level. Google can make money from apps, but HTC and Samsung can't. That's why I feel like the proper way to compete is still at standard phone pricing level. If Google wants to push prices down by $100 that's fine, but the whole half off thing is too disruptive to the industry IMO.

I think all this wouldn't be an issue if Google could make the Nexus a carrier phone with the updates solely in its control. If they were able to put its foot down like Apple regarding control over updates and preloading software, then I don't think anyone would really complain about the $199 contract pricing versus $599 unlocked.

Double agree - my new Nexus 4 is about as good as a S3 where by 2-3pm during my workday, with about 1.5 hours of on screen browsing, about an hour of Pandora, and only email checking every 15min, I'm at 30%. So now I'm looking for a charger which sucks. My note 2 got me used to all day moderate use.

These upcoming phones really need to prioritize battery life more seriously.

This made me lol. Why, you ask. Well, I think everyone has been saying that since the dawn of electronics. You think with all the optimizations and lower NM in CPUs and just everything that they can do to prevent a huge battery loss, we would have amazing battery by now.

Nope. Only certain devices that specifically have the battery size in it are capable or they're underpowered/underperformers (sometimes).

Anyway, the only way you'll see another Nexus on VZW is when they kill their CDMA network. That's all there really is to that argument.

Someone mentioned how the VZW way wasn't the Google way which is why they butted heads, and I just wanted to touch on that. Listen, Google has a pretty large sum of money and they're one of the largest companies on the earth. Apple has an enormous amount of money and are a large company as well. Apple was able to keep their methods of supplying updates easily since that's what they were accustomed to on AT&T so VZW bent over for them. Since Google really hasn't been a giant player with their devices (their OS is a different story), they don't see any reason why they should let Google control the updates.

It's ridiculous how Verizon is OK with that, but then again, you have to think about how Apple is able to negotiate, and it seems Google is just awful at it. Apple gets everyone to sign onto their technology/whatever. Google creates something amazing and barely anyone adopts it and then it's retired.. >_<

Anyway! So yeah... Nexus 5. I'm pretty stoked for it. One thing I wish it could do is the always listening controls the Moto X has (without that 3rd party app). That would be pretty awesome.

I don't necessarily agree, but a lot of problems are coming from the Google Services. Android needs a serious improvement in the PowerManager department and how the OS handles Wakelocks and pending app requests in the background.

Unfortunately for Mako and for us Google/CAF is not using the latest Kernel Power drivers that for example Manta does. I don't know why to be honest. I tried merging them once but things went kaboom after I flashed it for reasons that I'm too tired to explain at the moment. Not saying that the problem is that Power drivers, but the newer implementation that is used on Manta is much improved from Mako's code (which is pretty old in that department). These drivers are responsible for the PowerManagement routines from the Kernel side, wakelocks, suspend etc etc. Also Mako doesn't have a proper idle-state scaling like Manta or Tuna does, and that is also a big letdown. With proper C-state implementation the device wouldn't need to use Hotplugging to reduce power usage. I could go on and on. If the new Nexus comes with a proper modem solution, not this USB crap that we have, I'm sure things will be so much better in the long run.

The Snapdragon 800 supports this, so it's possible that Google might integrate it into Android itself.

The G2 has some very innovative and impressive hardware. It's too early to tell what might be brought over to the new Nexus, but possibilities include GRAM for panel self refresh, 24-bit 192 kHz audio output, OIS camera module, and LG's improved battery design (SiO+ anode).

Then there are the features introduced with the Snapdragon 800 series, such as Quick Charge 2.0, USB 3.0, the voice activation I mentioned above, and their more efficient LTE modem.

HTC and Samsung can and will compete. In fact, they do compete. For example the Samsung Galaxy S3 outsells the Nexus 4.
Nexus 4 gets subsidized by Google, other phones get "subsidized" by carriers.
 
Is there any proof that Google subsidise the Nexus devices or is this the case of repeat something a million times and it wont be questioned anymore?

PS: i can get a better subsidise from the "local mafia" then you get form the operators.

They compete currently because of carrier subsidies, but you pay it back in the end. It's a $600 phone even if you pay $200 up front and the rest over time. But it's a different kind of competition in the rest of the world where people are used to buying off-contract phones.

The other thing is the Nexus line is not that well known by the general public and has yet to really build up the same image that the other brands/phones.

We'll see.Maybe you'r right they can compete. Maybe Samsung and HTC can sell $299 GS4s and HTC Ones and sustain themselves.

I read that mini review last night. If the next nexus is based on that with the additional optimizations .... Killer phone.
