Hm.. that appears to have worked. I have 2 sticks of ram, I put both in the turquoise slots and couldnt get it to post, but only putting in 1 in the #1 slot worked.

To run them in dual channel on this board they have to be in the first 2 slots closest to the cpu, given the problems you had you should run memtest on your ram (if you get them both to work) and if there is a problem then RMA them.
Enjoy your new rig!

I disconnected then reconnected the ram and that appears to have resolved the issue. Now I just need to install the dvd burner and install windows. Yay.

I'm wondering if it wasn't user error :) I might've mis-installed the module. I'll do the memtest thing and check it out anyway.

1 thing I've discovered the post beep is very faint which takes some getting used to. I wish more mb makers did speech-posts like my asus a7n8x-deluxe board which made more sense than a series of beeps or digits on a mb that are hard to view without undoing the case.

(edit) I keep forgetting about the edit function... sorry about the multiple posts.

I haven't yet tried memtest yet, but I finally got the ram installed in dual-channel mode. Not sure why it took a few tries... hopefully memtest won't reveal any issues with this pqi ram I got from Frys on Friday.

I just got ahold of beta bios 3.73, it has no menu changes (which I could find) but if anybody is having problems which they believe might be solved with a BIOS update (or if you just want to try it for the heck of it;)), feel free to PM me and I'll send it to you.

EDIT: If I'm already posting about latest versions then I might as well let you all know that there is a new Realtek audio driver out also (v1.51)

Hi,

Can any one tell me where I can find this MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard in US? Is it I have to order only from Canada? Is there any other place that sell this motherboard apart getting from Canada or ebay?

thanks

I have not booting problem (hot boot) with Bios 3.60 too. Might flash back to 3.50.
Also, I have upgraded the CPU from 3200+ to 3700+ (San Diego 1MB cache E6). Hopefully, I will get better OC. I donate my old CPU to my g/f.
Does anyone has "cheated" Vcore using RMClock? How successful it is? I have problem coz the Vcore up does not kicks in until Windows completely boot (which don't happen all the time at higher frequency).

Sadly, the K8NGM2-FID seems to be discontinued; most inventories were depleted a couple of months ago. I wish this weren't true as I'd certainly buy one or two.

There are a couple (Abit & DFI) of 6150 mATX m/b's in the AM2 (new AMD socket) world that are similar to this, but for upgraders those require a change to DDR2 RAM.

I only know of a Foxconn m/b in the 6150 mATX 939-socket world, and it lacks the DVI graphics port.

If you're willing to drop back to a 6100 mATC 639, there's a Jetway board with both VGA and DVI... but I don't know how well it performs.

Perhaps others can give you better information.

Guys,

Can any one tell me which is the reliable place to buy this board MSI K8NGM2-FID even if it is in Canada(that can ship to US)? If I cant find it from anywhere I might be forced to go with some other motherboard.

thanks

Strange issue that is happening sporadically... not sure if it's windows, my drivers for my NIC (or settings), my switch or my router, but randomly, my internet connection drops & then immediately reconnects which disrupts downloads. Windows tells me that the cable has been unplugged, then it's plugged back in. It happens in under a second, so I don't lose the IP address.

Unfortunately since I no longer have a functional KVM, I can't test other machines to see if they encounter the same problem (so I can't rule out my router, switch or even my ISP).

This might get more responses in networking, it's probably not related to the mobo (although it may be the drivers)

I think i'll peruse dslreports and the networking forum... I just wondered if anyone else with this mb had this issue arise, and resolved it with a firmware update or driver update. I think I've got the updated drivers so I dunno.

Yahoo messenger doesn't seem to know how to deal with the built in sound... it can't seem to initialize the mixer. I get sound but i cannot mute it or change the volume within yahoo messenger, and i'm pretty sure the mic would not function either if I had one.

Yahoo messenger works with the onboard sound, sort of. I control the volume with a knob on the speakers.

However, the microphone input is awful. There is no way to stop internal feedback, even using headphones. Others reported this on the newegg comments. Since I often use YM, I stuck a soundcard in and disabled realtek.

I had something similar a few years ago. After contacting my ISP, they remotely-tested my connection and said everything was OK. So I started fiddling with network configuration and lots of other things, until I resigned myself to a clean Windows re-install. The problem persisted...

Finally, the ISP agreed to send a technician. First thing he did was look at my cable modem: "You have a Motorola modem. We are having a lot of problems with these" he then substituted a Samsung modem.

End of story. It took less than five minutes and the problem was solved. It never happened again.

A couple of times a year, I still get the "Cable Disconnected" warning, but this is always a real service interruption from the ISP.

I need a serial port bracket for this board and I was wondering if anyone got one that they don't use and would be willing to part with it for a reasonable price + shipping.

I didn't get any answer on fitting Extreme Spirit II on this board (pun alert) so I just went ahead and ordering one from Tigerdirect and tried it on. Luckily it fits and is now installed and running.

After updating the BIOS to 3.60 I'm still getting occasional hangs with only one SATA2 hard drive installed. This time I take out my recently acquired POST card and determined it mostly hangs when the code is 37, just before BIOS shows its post screen. Any ideas?

I tried the 93.71 driver with the K9NGM2-FID. I had problems so I contacted MSI and they told me to use the latest MSI version of the nVidia forceware driver 82.05. My problems went away, but I also upgraded the BIOS to 1.18 so I really don't know which fixed the problem.

I got random reboot problem with my new CPU (A64 3700+).
It prime stable for 12 hrs and memtest stable 22 passes. I stop both test manually.
However, when I use the computer lightly (says browsing Internet). It reboot it self. No BSOD, just simply reboot.
Here's the config
MSI BIOS tried 3.40, 3.50 and 3.60 same result HT set at 800MHz.
A64 3700+ San Diego @ 2.365GHz (215x11) on Zalman 7700AlCu + Nexus fan (max 52c loaded, idle around high 30 or early 40)
Corsair XMS DDR-400 2x512MB @ 215MHz (3-3-3-8, 2.65v, anyone know default voltage of this ram?)
Onboard graphic
Airlink 101 802.11g Wifi
Samsung SP2504c
BenQ 1640
Seasonic S12-380

My previous CPU was A64 3200+ Venice. Runs stable @ 2.2GHz but also have 2 more sticks of Corsair ValueSelect 512MBx2 (so run at 2T and 333MHz)

Any thought?

I had the bad luck to get this mobo plus a Maxtor hard drive for a friend, and learned about the incompatibility the hard way. Also, I seem to have discovered a workaround: disabling Quick boot seems to fix the problem.

For the record, the problem is that the BIOS doesn't recognize a SATA hard drive when cold booting, but it does see it after the first soft reboot (alt-ctrl-del etc)
After disabling quick boot, BIOS realiably sees the hard drive every time, and the OS loads just fine.

Also, I could install Windows just fine and the machine is now running realiably, all in 3GB/s SATA mode the whole time.
The trick could be to install dos (format c: /s) to the hard drive and then start the installation from there (execute [drive letter]:\i386\winnt.com)

Hope I helped as much as this thread helped me in the first place :)

MSI live monitor seemsto like to cause grief for me. I was checking drivers and suddenly my screen went nuts and the computer didn't respond. Upon reboot, it keeps telling me "The URL is invalid" when I try to do an auto search. If I try to view last result, I get nothing but "internet explorer script error" messages.

Could you please explain what problems you had?

Using the 82.05 driver is quite the cure :disgust: This driver is dated May 18 2006 on MSI's web site. It has the old aka classic interface.

My understanding is that all current Forceware drivers should be compatible with the 61xx chip. As I am going to buy a discrete videocard soon, I would expect the latest driver to work with that card as well as with the 6150 integrated graphics.

The point of getting an NVidia discrete card is to have only one set of drivers on my system for both the IG and the discrete card.

If the latest NVidia driver has problems with the IG, I might as well get an ATI card.

This was for the K9NGM2-FID and not the K8NGM2-FID of course, but they are very similar and I have seen the K9NGM2-FID mentioned here from time to time so I thought I would post a reply about the 93.71 driver since I originally tried to use it with the K9 board. The problem was I could not playback 1080i source material. 720p was ok but 1080i was unwatchable. For some reason MSI is not recommending the nVidia posted revisions to forceware for the K9 board. I don't know about the K8 because I have not updated the forceware driver on my K8NGM2-FID board since I installed it in January of this year. It is some 80 series driver and I really don't have a problem with it so I have just left it alone. Actually it might have been the BIOS update that fixed the problem I don't really know. In the early days of the K8 board we had a lot of problems with the BIOS.
