I think your memory is holding you back.
I have both Opteron 170 and 146. They all run at 2GHz default. (200 HTT x 10 multi)

Right now, my opty 146 and 170 run at 2.5GHz (250 HTT x 10) @ default vcore. Also HTT is 5X (this board is very stable at 5x HTT, 250MHz)

I'm using 1T @ DDR 500 speed. I don't know about your memory, but test several option, then you may use at DDR500(250MHz) speed.

Also, you may update BIOS version to v3.5 because u don't need CPU multiplyer with that CPU.

Thanks for all this help!

I set the multiplier to 7x 1400mhz as you instructed, then set the CPU-LDT To 225; that booted fine. I went onto step 2. I went straight in at 250 CPU-LDT as well as setting the mutliplier to 10x, and I am now running Prime95 (well, Stress Prime 2004 - as that has a timer :p) for 5 minutes and will report back! Thanks.

The purpose of using BIOS v3.13 is just to make sure that the motherboard is not the bottleneck by lowering CPU multiplier deliberately. As the system boots fine at 250MHz with 2T, your motherboard is fine and you may flash BIOS back to v3.5.

Keep the memory voltage to 2.6V as it is the recommended voltage for OCZ Performance PC3200 by OCZ. There are lots of discussions about timings and command rate. You may test various timings, tight or loose, with 1T or 2T. But I would just set timings to SPD and the command rate to 2T if 1T were unstable. There won't be much difference in most real applications.

Memclock Value [Auto] is the same as [200 MHz]. Make sure that the memory modules are inserted in DIMM1 & DIMM2 (the two slots nearest CPU, Green + Purple). The combination Green + Green will function only as single-channel DDR and will decrease the memory speed to DDR333. Set FSB to 200MHz and check the actual memory frequency with CPU-Z. It should be 200MHz. If it is 166MHz, something is wrong. Choose Memclock Value [200 MHz] manually (BIOS v3.4/v3.5 allows it) and check again. When overclocking you will have to choose Memclock Value [166 MHz] anyway.

Does anyone know if I can use ECC memory in this board? I dont have any other memory here to put in it at the moment. I seem to be having some compatiblity issues with my Crucial Ballistix PC4000. I need to swap out the ram to see if that is the problem, I just dont have anything else around.

renethx: thanks. I found a copy of clockgen 1.0.4.2, and it works properly. For me, version 1.0.4.7 does not work, regardless of whether CPU-Z is running or not.

I am finding that with all obvious parameters set the same, BIOS 3.13 will run mprime -t for 3 hours before failing, but with 3.50 mprime -t fails in less than one minute. The system is a 3500+, Mepis Linux, Memclock limit 166, 2T, x11 multiple (3.13), 218MHZ LDT, all spread spectrums disabled. Earlier I reported that with 3.50 I could achieve stability only at 212MHZ. Anyone else notice that 3.13 appears to allow higher OC than 3.50? There must be something different that I am missing, or else 3.13 is doing something under the hood that I cannot see.

btw, with 3.13 I determined that the mobo is not the bottleneck.

Edit: Reading earlier messages again, I see that with 3.13 you get an added +0.05vcore when you manually select the CPU multiple. This must be the explanation.

I can now confirm that the Freezer 64 Pro works with this board, I installed it today and it's great! the fan does cover the first 2 memory slots but the fan can click right off the heatsink so it's not really a problem.

renethx, you might want to add this heatsink to the list in the OP.

K8NGM2-FID is out of stock in many retailers (NewEgg.com, ZipZoomfly.com, Buy.com). It seems that the board is being discontinued. You'd better hurry if you are going to buy it.

I may have bought the last one NewEgg had. The day after I bought it I couldn't find it listed there.

I get it tomorrow per UPS tracking info.

I posted this last night but it never appeared? Anyway I have a question. I bought the MSI MB and an AMD 64 x2 3800 and built my computer. I followed the instructions contained in the first post as best I could. I have a problem. Looking at Device manager I have a yellow "!" by two entries both called "IDE channel". Try as I may I can't seem to solve the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

I want to trade with somebody who needs the "newish" audio bracket with the spdif coax and has the "oldish" serial port bracket.

If that's you, please PM me before noon Fri ET.

Would it be problematic to use PC2700 DDR RAM on the MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard?

I am specifically thinking about the 'Memclock value' which I guess should be effectively set to 166 Mhz ? What's the default 'Memclock value' ? [AUTO] or [200] ?

if the default value is set to [Auto] I should have no problems booting up a system using PC2700 DDR RAM, right?

The reason for asking, is that I am thinking about upgrading my old Athlon XP system, reusing as many components as possible, including my 2 * 512 MB PC2700 DDR-RAM.
And I wouldn't want to be stuck with an "initial" boot-up problem (if the 'Memclock Value' is set to 200 by default, which would be way too high for my PC2700 RAM )

vsonerud, there is nothing wrong with using PC2700 DDR-333. Just set Memclock value to [Auto]. Then memory will run at the default frequency 166MHz.

renethx, thank you for your reassurement about using PC2700 RAM.

I think, however, I might not have explained myself good enough:

My concern was that I might end in a "chicken-and-egg" situation where I would like to change the 'Memclock value' in the BIOS settings to [AUTO] but is unable to because the default value is set to [200] causing the system to not even boot (stopping me from entering the BIOS in the first place) when using PC2700 RAM.

That's the basis for my question about the default (read: factory) setting for 'Memclock value'.

1. First clear CMOS, that will reset BIOS to the default settings including Memclock [AUTO]. If your motherboard is brand new, then you don't have to clear CMOS.
2. Turn off the switch of PSU. Insert PC2700 modules.
3. Turn on PSU and start your system. The system will read SPD and recognize memory as DDR-333. If you use DDR-333 RAM, [AUTO] means [166 MHz].

Would it be possible at all to overclock an AMD X2 3800+ on this motherboard when using PC2700 (333 MHz) DDR-RAM?

I guess this would mean that the 'Memclock value' would have to bet set lower than 166? Is it possible to set it to 133 ?

If it would be possible to set 'Memclock value' to 133, would then the following scenario be (theoretically possible)?:

CPU-LDT frequency: 240 MHz

CPU: 240 MHz x 10 = 2400 MHz
Memory: 200/133 x 10 = 15.04 rounded off to 15, 2400 MHz / 15 = 160 MHz

What gives, I have been waiting for Newegg to get the MSI K8NGM2-FID back in stock and now it is gone? Is MSI dropping it or what? Grrrr. I need firewire and this is a perfect board for HTPC.

Thanks grits, I see it again. They had me going there for a while. I have no idea why they killed it while they were working on it.

I installed this motherboard. However, I am failing to get into the nV RAID BIOS setup. I have 2 Maxtor 120 GB HD (PATA-133) in RAID0 mode. Now I can't access the RAID to set it up. The manual says to hit F10 while posting but nothing is happening.

Please help.

Hello avi85,

Can you tell me more about this post. I mean, are the first 2 memory slots still available or can't we just use them anymore ? Are they blocked ?
I can't find a correct translation for "the fan can click right off the heatsink" in french, sorry...
Can you explain to me what it means ? Do you mean you just remove the fan or put it on the other side of the heatsink ?
I'm really interessed in this heatsink, essentially for the price, noise isn't important for me.
I look on Thermalright XP90 on the other hand but it's a little more expensive.

Thanks a lot.

re. BIOS sleep states

Is it better to select S3/STR or AUTO and then let Windows select S1/S3 by itself?

EDIT: other question is: How do I disable the Nvidia firewall and Network Access Manager?
