1. Turn off the switch of PSU (or pull off the power cord from PSU), then clear CMOS. Leave the system for ten minutes. Then turn on the switch of PSU and power on the system. See if it works.

2. Do you mean that you tried BIOS recovery feature with USB floppy drive but it did not work? Unless boot block is not dead, it should work, and I don't think clearing CMOS killed boot block.

3. If none of them works, then RMA'ing the motherboard may be the last resort.

I have no wake-on-xxx event enabled in BIOS.
Does anybody know if MSI plan to correct this in a future BIOS update ?

Thank you.

Interesting. I wonder if that means you could power up your PC from a USB device from a shutdown. Probably not likely, but let us know if you are able to test it.

Thanks,

I didn't see any "wake on" options listed in this thread nor in the specs on MSI's site. Can this board perform wake on USB, serial port, or LAN?

I have an IRMAN that I use with my HTPC. I'm concerned that it won't work to wake the MSI board up since it's connected via the serial port.

Thanks,
jawgee

See manual.

Wakeup Event Setup section :
- PS/2 Device Wakeup (specific key if enabled)
- Resume by MAC LAN
- Resume by PCI Device
- Resume by RTC Alarm

Thanks. Do you have a working link to that manual? I can seem to get into MSI's manual site this morning.

No wake on USB, huh? Seems kind of unusual for a new mothherboard not to have that feature.

Thanks,

Can anybody suggest if this is ok or might be any faulty component?

helloman,

1)What are temps when it's idle?

2)I am only using stock HSF and Thermaltake thermal grease. (I have other mobos with Artic Silver 5). I idle at 32C with cool n quiet enabled and after running a stress test for 4 hours, I maxed it out at 50C. What HSF are you using? What thermal grease are you using?

2)Check to make sure your HSF is properly seated.

3)Also don't forget to take into account the room ambient temps.

4)Does your case run any cooler with case side off? If so, then it's due to an airflow issue.
My X2 3800 is in a Chemning SFF case. Yet, I am still able to achieve 32C with the power supply fan and big 120mm fan on the outake but NO intake fan.

Good luck...

wake on USB always works, you can't turn it off. I have all the "wake on" options turned off in the BIOS, and it still always wakes up (S3) from USB mouse or keyboard. I don't like the mouse waking it up, so I just disabled that from the XP device manager.

I'm having trouble getting the USB port of the MSI motherboard to communicate properly with my old AGFA Snapscan e52.

Plug and play finds the correct hardware info from the scanner, but when I start the scanner program I get:

"A communication problem occured
Open the log file and find out more"

But there is nothing of value in the log file.

Are there any known issues regarding USB communication?
Would a newer bios version help?

I know a few of us have had some problems with high cpu usage after resuming from S3 standby. I think I found a fix/workaround. My setup is an IDE HD on the primary IDE port, a DVD burner on the Secondary, and a Raid 0 Array on SATA 1 & 2. SATA 3 & 4 are empty. I do not have nvidia's IDE drivers installed, so if you have those installed, remove them. In the device manager, you will have a category with SCSI and RAID controllers, and under that theres 2 Nvidia Serial ATA controller entries. Find out which one your hard drives are on, and then disable the one that there are no drives on. Just right click on it, and hit disable. It seems that if you dont have any drives on the ports, then you need to turn it off or else the cpu usage will be really high. Im pretty sure that solved my problem. Ill keep you updated to see if it really fixed the problem for good, but so far all is well. Hope that helps --Tom

Here's my experience with a 74GB Raptor (WD740GD), this Board, and installing Windows XP.

First off, I'm not an IT person. I'm an electrical engineer (power), and I just enjoy doing most things myself. This is only the 2nd PC that I've built on my own, so I consider myself a newbie.

With the Raptor plugged into the board, I couldn't get Windows Setup to start no matter what I did. Luckily, I have three close friends that are IT guys that I could bounce ideas off of and get to test the drive for me (don't have SATA on my other machine).

The solution was to unplug the Raptor, plug my other hard drive in (WD2500KS), get Windows Setup to start; hit F6 and plug the Raptor back in, and finally, load the nVidia Storage Driver off the floppy that came with the board.

I am not using a RAID array, so I didn't install the nVidia RAID driver, just the storage driver.

My friends suggested that it was a driver issue, but I had read in this thread that I didn't need to hit F6 and install additional drivers unless I was using RAID, so I was skeptical. I did a google search to find out that sometimes you need to do this with Raptor drives.

Hopefully this will help other newbies out there!

Update: My system was very unstable with the nVidia storage driver. I used the WD HD Tools to test and write zeros to the Raptor, and then reinstalled XP without any problems using the windows drivers.

Hi, I've been looking to buy a new motherboard, came accross the 6150s, then decided to see what people were using for HTPCs. That led me to the forum at AVS, and that led me to this forum. Great, thorough, forum you guys have here. I've decided that this MSI board is the way to go. I have one question though, an issue that may not change my mind, but I would still like aswered:

Has anyone tried putting win98 on this as a dual-boot? If it truly isn't possible as many new Mobo manuals state, can anyone suggest a way to run old Windows games that on XP?

I have some that just won't run on 98 no matter what settings I try.

Does anyone know why some of these new motherboards won't work with Windows 98? Is it just that they aren't writing compatible drivers for the new components?

Well, thank you for your time. I'm sure I'll be in here more often once I buy the board, and I thank you for this extensive TRUE manual you have all put together.

??? My USB wake *does not* work from S3 using either bluetooth keyboard, mouse, or from IR remote, which is a major pain. I've poked around XP to try and find the appropriate settings you reference to see if mine are unchecked, but haven't been able to... any ideas where to look?

I think it is just the decision of the chipset manufacturer. None of ATI and nVIDIA offers Win98 drivers for its Socket 939 chipsets. AMD also does not provide Athlon 64 processor driver for Win98. VIA (K8T800/K8T890/K8T900) is an exception.

Hi, I previously posted the high temp using Sonata II case on X2 3800+. That was my fault and I had forgot to connect the back big 120mm fan of the case. Because of which the air flow was not proper. I connected it now and the temp hadly crosses 40. its mostly 35

I am using stock heatsink and fan and the grease which came with the processor. I have acrilic silver grease but wasn;t sure if its worth using that.

thanks for all the replies

I also reported a problem where the DVI doesn't show anything on my TV till window actually loads completely. I don't see any bios bootup on my HDTV using DVI->HDMI
THis is still true and I check my bios settings and couldn't find anything which could make it work.
Any suggestion please. I want to really try mythtv and not sure if I can use DVI there.

Another question I have is on my HDTV, there is significant overscan at 1280*720. I installed nvidia latest drivers. How can I comensate this. If I use understan, the desktop doesn't cover the whole screen. Any suggestions

thanks

PCalert4 is suddenly showing the 12V supply at 13.04 -- sometimes in normal blue letters, sometimes in a -red- color. I can't find any documentation on this program, so I'm uncertain whether it's measuring PSU power or board-regulated power. 13+V seems unhealthy to me, but -how- bad is it? If replacement is necessary, would it be the m/b or the PSU that needs it. 'Guess I'll contact MSI and ask them this Q, but I'd like an answer ASAP! :(

Hi everyone!
I wonder if someone has put a Creative X-Fi card together with an MSI K8NGM2-FID, and if so, experienced any problems??

Hi,

This may sound kind of dumb, but does the K8NGM2-FID mobo support PC2700 memory?

I got one of these mobos in for my daughter, and we installed an Athlon 64 X2 3800 CPU.

When I first installed the CPU, I had a 512MB stick (double-sided, PC3200) in DIMM1, and it booted fine. After getting the mobo into the case, etc., I moved the memory stick from her old system (512MB, PC2700, single-sided), and the machine would not boot (fan turning, but no video).

I swapped the earlier 512MB stick in, and the machine booted ok.

So, I'm kind of curious. Does this mobo REQUIRE the use of DDR400/PC3200 memory?

Thanks,
Jim

K8NGM2-FID supports PC2100/PC2700/PC3200. Clearing CMOS after swapping the PC2700 memory module and before turning on the system may fix the problem.

Nice to have this thread, got lot's of useful info (and my money ;)

Was using A7N8X Deluxe 2.0 + Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ 1GB RAM. Too hot in Hong Kong.

now using X2 3800+ @ 2.4G and 2x 1GB Corsair 3200C2 v2.1.

Anyone using 4x 1GB with this mb? the Corsair 2GB pack is selling at US$180.

I am considering getting another 2GB to max it out, and hopefully the system can be run for 3 years as my barton did ;) just can't wait for conore and AM2 so got this rig.

thx for your help.

'Can't answer if anyone's using 4x, but I can remind you of renethx's comments about 4 sticks:
:
* Memory can run only as DDR333. Choosing Memclock Value [Auto], [200 MHz], [183 MHz], [166 MHz] will all have the same effect as Memclock Value [166 MHz]. Please refer to MSI site and AMD white paper for details.
* Memory can run only at 2T. If you choose 1T, then the system will not POST or will hang when loading OS.

renethx,

I tried to clear CMOS, and even removed the battery, but it wouldn't boot with that particular stick of (known-good) memory.

I keep wondering if the single-sided vs. double-sided was the difference? The latter memory was the one that worked...

Hi All,

Another question from a K8NGM2-FID newbie. This one on my daughter's new build:

CPU: AMD 64 X2 3800+
OS: Win XP Home SP2 (all latest updates)
Drivers: All drives from CD installed (VGA, NFORCE, and HD sound)
Memory: 1 512MB stick of PC2700

Question:

In Device Manager, everything looks ok. But, when I go under USB, it shows only USB, USB Root, but nothing that seems to indicate USB2. Specifically, I don't see "USB 2.0 Root Hub".

Is there an additional driver or drivers that I need to install? FYI, I haven't worked with XP Home much, so maybe it displays devices differently?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Folks,
I'm looking for some feedback from those of you using video cards instead of the onboard video. I've recently tried using TT+ffdshow w/ onboard graphics for DVD playback, and was underwhelmed with the results. I'm sure I can tweak it to make it at least a little better, but I am FAR from the picture quality of my Denon DVD player. My display device is a Sony GWIII. Can anyone comment on the image quality difference they've seen when using a video card (6600GT, 7600GS, etc) instead of the 6150? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. TIA,

ddm

Hi,

FYI, I tried this same stick in a different K8NGM2-FID mobo, with an Athlon 64 3000+ CPU (E6) and it again wouldn't boot at all. I also tried DIMM2, same deal.

It looks like this mobo may not be compatible with single-sided DIMMs?

Jim
