How do you get dts or digital 5.1 to work. I got the digital audio out to work using a gigabyte adapter. But when I try playing a dvd in windvd player my amp "which is a pretty high end yamaha" does not pick up a dts or 5.1 signal. Is there an option I have to turn on somewhere? Thanks

Anyone else having trouble getting any audio whatsoever? WHen I plug in a pair of headphones or any speakers into any of the rear audio jacks, I do get the realtek program but I can't even play music or anything. Very strange.

area123: I remember same thing happened to me. Go into control panel / sounds and audio / volume tab, speaker settings. Click advanced and select what kind of speakers you have.

If that doesn't do it, check device manager to make sure your audio is properly installed (no yellow or red icon)

Excuse a noobie, but I'm looking into getting an Athlon-based HTPC setup, and I was considering either the MSI RS482M4-ILD or the K8NGM2-FID. I'm a bit hesitant about the RS482M4-ILD because I've heard the USB is slow, but I'm also hesitant about the K8NGM2-FID because I've heard of some Nforce 4 data corruption problems. Has anyone run into data corruption on the K8NGM2-FID, or is this board free of such problems? I plan to get a Seagate 7200.9 SATA drive, if that makes any difference. Thanks!

I would pick the K8NGM2-FID. I think the 6150/430 chipset is a little better (it's newer anyway). You get SATA II and gigabit lan. I think you can avoid any possible data corruption problem simply by not installing the nvidia IDE driver and nvidia firewall. In any event, it's not known whether this chipset has the same problem as the nforce4 chipset.

If I were picking a RS482 board, I'd go for the DFI board which has much more OC option than either MSI board, plus it has SPDIF out built in, if you need that.

Thanks for the awesome thread. I just wish there was a place where it was easy to buy an optical SPDIF bracket.

I've tried using one of the ASUS SPDIF boards and modifying the pinout, but to no avail.

*Edit: For what it's worth, I've tried using the included coax SPDIF output cable that came with my nMedia HTPC case, and that doesn't work at all.

Read the rest of this thread. I know it's long, but there are instructions on how to use the cable that comes with the nMediaPC 200 case. Basically, you can either rewire it, or cut off the last (empty) pin connector with a utility knife or something (which is what I did).

I have the same case, and I have the coax SPDIF working just fine, 5.1 sound to my receiver.

Does anyone know why this board appears to be unavailable now? I bought four of them three weeks ago from NewEgg, and they are now not even listed in their catalog. ZipZoomFly had the board up until a week or so ago, but it is now listed as out of stock and shows a high price of $109! This is $30 more than what I paid for the ones I purchased. I cannot find the board at any price from anyone that has them in stock. Any clue?

What is the most quite heatsink I can get for this board without spending a crazy amount of money. Looking for something cooler and quiter than stock amd heatsink. No overclocking. This is for a x2 3800 in an antec overture II case. Thanks

I don't know what you consider a crazy amount of money, but try a thermalright xp-90 and a low speed 92mm fan. Then use the board's smartfan feature to keep the fan nice and quiet.

edit: hmm I just realize the xp-90 may not clear your htpc overture case. sorry.

James -

I tried to modify an ASUS bracket with combined coax/optical out and could only get the coax working when connected to the K8NGM2, even when I supplied it a +5V signal it asks for. Oddly enough, in the process of troubleshooting I discovered the optical out works on my ASUS board even without the +5V line. I'm mystified...

I ended up modifying a different ASUS bracket that has coax in and a coax out. Not sure I'll ever need the coax in for my HTPC, but I guess you never know.

Thanks for your kind reply. I always get a kick out of people that feel a need to point out that something has already been discussed. If their concern is that the thread gets overly long, I do not see why they do not realize that adding their scolding just adds to the length! Just ignore if you do not like the post.

In any event, what I was wondering is if there are any of the motherboards available anywhere that someone might know about. You never know! Thanks.

does this mean a Coolermaster Susouro 92mm HS/F should work on a 2-FID board in a Sugo case?

Well, its been 2 days - and I've finally read through the ENTIRE thread! ;-) This thread finally pushed me to sign up. Renethx this is a great collection of info, thank you (and all other contributors).

So my questions: (go easy, I am a newbie ;-)

1) for clarification - is the TV-Out bracket ALWAYS included in the K8NGM2-FID model? (I have seen the MB for sale several places but the details on what is included is often skimpy or none existant)

2) is the TV-Out bracket TRUE digital component video (y/Cr/Cb) or is it analog s-video pretending to be digital component video (y/Pr/Pb)? (I have seen references to HDTV Out - but the terms are often missued and / or misleading - and the K8NGM2-FID manual shows Y/C/Comp labels on the TV-out header pin diagram which doesnt help clarify anything)

3) does anyone know of problems with an ATI Capture card in the x1 slot? (I know there are issues with ATI discrete video cards and the onboard nvidia - but a caputre card from ATI should'nt have any issues - right?!?!?)

FYI, the x1 card is a PowerColor Theater 550 PRO PCI Express

I have a light "problem" which seems to come from the MSI.
I'm using an iMon Knob RC. The receiver is connected in USB to the MSI.
Under operation, it emits a blue light permanently and flickers for each key hit.
The problem is that, when I shutdown my HTPC completely, the blue light remains lit.

The manufacturer sent me this explanation:
KNOB led lights on when USB 5V is active. When system is off state, generally in most of M/B USB 5V is inactive , but in your system USB 5V is active. Please update your M/B BIOS to the latest version.
Is it relative to a BIOS parameter ?
It does not occur on my other PC.

Thank you.

Does anyone know if you need to install any SATA drivers with this motherboard is you are installing XP on a SATA drive in a NON-raid setup?
I think that renethx may have mention in his install guide that you don't but this thread is now so large I cant find it?
