Are you sure it isn't the $40? I can't read the link, but it doesn't make sense that the $20 and the $40 pack includes the same amount of characters, one costing twice the price for some costume packs.

the pricing is for "season 1", and the ign link discusses "season 2" which will have the same type of pricing for it.

the $40 price tag gets you the dlc costumes as well as ki1 arcade port, with no online play as of now.

ill personally be getting the $20 price. i don't care about costumes and all that crap. and i already own a ki1 arcade game.

That is annoying, but I guess 20 for the full roster isn't awful. Hopefully, they come down on the stupid $5 per character prices though.

its not $20 for the "full roster". it's $20 for the 8 season 1 characters. there will be more characters after this.

EDIT:

and only 6 will be available at launch, with the other 2 being there hopefully by february or march.

The wording at IGN confused me, because they made it sound like there wouldn't be characters in season 2. The wording is... "Killer Instinct will also have a 'season two', Lobb tells IGN. DLC, he explained, 'wouldn't be characters. The idea is, we'll have season two. Go out a year-ish, and just repeat the whole thing. It's one game....'"

So, what exactly does that mean for season two if it "wouldn't be characters"?

no clue. i just think that's bad reporting by ign. if he states "go out a year and do the same thing" i'd expect it to be another 8 or so characters in a year. but once again, more vague news from something coming out on the x1 lol.

Yeah my hope is you get every KI character in the game eventually.

I just read the ign article and how it sounded to me is season two will include costumes and stages and other stuff as dlc but they won't make characters tied to dlc as they want people to be able to pick and choose what content they own. It is all one game, and you are not restricted except to what characters and costumes you own.

The wording is strange but that's what I think is being said. I also browsed the ign comments and some people are just totally ignorant lol. Talking about how they want 15 characters. Well the developers have had not even a year yet working on it and no character is a clone of another. That is not easy to do from concept to completion.

20$ for 8
40$ for 8 and some addons including skins and the original KI
$4.99 per individual character

For season two repeat the model above.

In the future they want to continue this model perpetually until the console dies according to the guy in the video.

Which is fine to me. Think about it, you buy the first pack...find a character you like and use him. You don't need to buy anything else. You can play online, ranked, offline etc forever without ever buying the new stuff. You also can buy all the packs to have a complete collection.

I can see where some people think this is going to try to perpetually nickle and dime you but if you compare it to Street Fighter 4, this is a much better model. You had SF4 release for full price, then another release branded super street fighter 4 for $40, then a bunch of costume packs for $4 each, then Arcade Edition again released for $40($15 DLC pack). Then they announced 5 new characters and stages DLC for $15 ($40 to get the disk) as Ultra Street Fighter 4. Likely more costume DLC to come as well. With each release being incompatible with the last in some ways. You could match up with AE players but you were locked out of "AE-Only" lobbies. It was a little confusing at first until everyone pretty much moved over to AE anyway.

Point is, capcom gave much less choice than KI is giving while also giving certain restrictions that are not in KI.

I agree. It's nice that they view KI as a "platform" to add to rather than a game and an inevitable sequel. I don't see it lasting the entire life of the X1 but it's a good idea and fairly priced.

If the community embraces it and it is popular enough for tourneys etc it may last a long time. I don't think it'll be the entire lifespan like you said but I can see it being played in 5 years if it's quality enough.

People complaining should complain about BlazBlue being a full price release and only 8 characters. $20 is a steal.

i dont think the people complaining about the game are complaining about the price, but rather complaining about 6 characters being out at launch, with no story mode.

Three things I think about. First they are saying that the pricing is wrong because they are nickle and dimeing you and that they think asking us to pay for "OMG only 8 characters" is unreasonable. They are looking at in comparison to something like SSF4 and MK9 where you have 20+ which is not a reasonable comparison because those games are all or nothing. You have to buy the full price game even if you only plan to use one character. Second you can "top off". If someone buys a couple extra characters but then wants the whole thing, you can just buy what you don't have for a reduced price. Third, I doubt very highly that anyone who even mentions "no story mode? OMG!" or something similar would even consider story a main component of a fighting game. No fighting game in history has had a very good story. It's usually just some random reason why you are fighting and maybe why you end up fighting whatever character you are matched against. It isn't a selling point at all. Maybe it's my opinion but if you are looking for a story mode, don't play fighting games.

When you build a game and 5 of the 20 characters or whatever number you have all share the same move list with modified animations and damage (except a unique special) it is quite easy to make tons of characters. When you make every character play and feel differently, that presents a different challenge. Especially if you want to differentiate between grappling, rushing, ranged etc and make it balanced.

mortal kombat had an amazing story mode and it was a huge selling point. and many people who are fans of ki loved the story that went along with it. i think that injustice had a great one too but i never played it.

and again, i haven't seen anyone complaining about the $20 price point, but about having 6 characters at launch, and no story mode.

I have, tons of them over at IGN.

The problem for me is, when you have to use a story mode to sell a fighting game, you don't have a very good fighting game on your hands. Maybe it's cause I thought MK9 was terrible in it's mechanics.

MK9 did exactly for me exactly what I was hoping it would....took me back to 20 years ago. I'm hoping KI will do the same.

That's fine. I'm bias against it cause I didn't like the game mechanics used in it compared to SF4 and KOF. It's just opinion really though. The game seems like it would be better for someone who is pretty new to fighters though. Easier to get into, but I found it had less depth to keep me interested. Oh well.

KI seems like it can be the best of both worlds for me.

Absolutely, MK9 wasn't for everyone, I completely understand not liking the mechanics. I feel like they hit that old school feel, which was good enough to me. Just talking about it makes me want to put it back in the console for a bit.

I was kind of hoping Madcatz had a little more info on the new stick's release. Guess it won't make launch or they'd probably tell everyone so they can order one.
