I will never forgive them if they make this game anything other than amazing. It *must* live up to its predecessors.

I think it has the potentiol to be amazing and worth of its Fallout title. I have a lot of faith in Bethesda with this title.

I have absolutely no faith in Bethesda. But I do have a lot of hope. That's worth something... right?

I liked Oblivion a lot. Fallout 3 should be great and it's always good to see an RPG that's not set in the tired old fantasy setting.

I could never get into the old Fallout games because of the turn based combat and graphics, since the only RPG games I've really played are NWN, Deus Ex, and Oblivion.

They need to stop using the Gamebryo engine though. 3 years later and it still runs like crap on modern systems, and looks no better than Far Cry. It's the most bloated engine I've ever seen.

Ummm... no.
Oblivion at max with Qarl's Texture Pack, Natural Environments, and a better water mod runs above 30 fps at all times w/8xQCSAA + SSTrAA. It is quite well programmed.

I wish they would have an option for turn-based combat at least. I know a lot of people don't care for it but ti was one of the things I loved about the original games. As for the view I don't care if its isometric but it'd be nice if you could make it 3rd person and then turn-based, but I doubt they'll have that much flexibility. I enjoyed Oblivion quite a bit, but the thing I was most disappointed in for the game was the combat. The melee combat was so pathetically simple that by the end of the game it wasn't even fun fighting anymore.

I liked Oblivion, but I'm wary of a "Oblivion in the Fallout universe" game.

First of all, I was one of those people who liked the turn-based combat. The Oblivion combat was way too easy. So long as you were persistent and had any speed at all, you could take down any opponent with nothing more than a club. The combat only really became fun when I made a stealth character for the sake of bypassing all of the really boring combat (and occasional stealth-kills, those are fun too of course)

In Fallout, every location you could visit had some importance. In Oblivion, there were countless dungeons, caves, landmarks, etc. that were completely meaningless. Some of them were neat the first time you went through, but sadly many of the dungeon designs were repeated. Some of them even had neat backstories and easter eggs. The majority of them made it feel like I had no reason to explore some dimly lit set of caverns, killing all of its inhabitants for phat lewtz.

Fallout 3 has incredible potential, and the graphics already look outstanding. I'm very wary that it won't live up to the first two games, though. Who knows, maybe gameplay of the Oblivion style is just what the franchise needs...

However, an Oblivion gameplay take on the Fallout universe could prove interesting.

Or, if they choose to go 3rd person, they will need to couple the IP with a suitable engine...kind of like the advancements from Baldur's Gate to Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic.

An interview I read about a year ago stated that you should be able to play the whole thing in 3rd person if you wish, but I think the default is first person.

Some of the data thats coming in now about Fallout 3 destroys my faith in the game, though I didn't have much to begin with. Its shaping up to be nothing more than Oblivion with a Fallout skin on.

The combat will be mind numbly boring, just like Oblivion.
There will be only 4 voice actors, just like Oblivion.
The story will be purely superficial, just like Oblivion.
The majority of the zones and instances will have no backstory, depth, or other plot devices, just like Oblivion.

It will, however, have flashy graphics, a dumbed down inventory, and its simple combat will appeal to console gamers.

Bethesda lost me as a buy-first-day customer due to Oblivion. While I may get Fallout3, it won't be til long after the hype of release. When there's a chance to get a better perspective on it. I think they've gone to the format of 'Summer Blockbusters' that sell well for a bit and then fade away.

It's releasing on consoles which automatically means it won't ever be as good or deep or original as Fallout 2.

Probably more so because the original Black Isle is gone (now obsidian) and those guys could make games.

One thing that should be mentioned is that Oblivion has awesome support from people who make mods and improvements to the game. So hopefully that will be intact when Fallout 3 is released so that end users can create their own adventures.

I *do* mean to bring up a old thread - i'm just now seeing the screen shots... i'm sad right now. I would have never dreamed or imagined (certainly never wished) that Fallout would become a pseudo FPS that reminds me a little too much of HGL in camera layout. Pardon me while I wipe away the tears of having to realize the possibility that the true sequel to the game(s) that really started me gaming on a PC when I was 15-16 will be ruined by flashy graphics and a lackluster "open" environment. I'm done ranting for now about this and my expectations for the future of Fallout

I hope and wish I am proved wrong

Even as someone who missed out on Fallout 1 and 2 in their prime (I have tried to playthrough both since but I end up shelving 'em) I'm still trying to get excited for the third installment. More RPG goodness is needed for the PC.

Why on earth was the supermutant doing a headstand so the player could blow his leg off while shooting at shoulder level?

Between this and the one with the 200 year old ravenous man beast ghoul who still has pants on, I really wonder what on earth is going on over at Bethesda.

Deus Ex 2-esque physics, probably. Shoot a guy in the head and he'll do a couple of cartwheels.
