Another thing to consider when finding/joining servers is Battlelog on PC or iOS.

This is one of the most underrated features in a game EVER. I play with my PS4 connected to my left monitor while my right monitor runs Battlelog. From here you can run a full in-game map! It's amazing! You can also customize your loadouts or find servers. If you click "join" on the PC/iOS, the PS4 will immediately launch you into that game.

So as broke as the browser is in-game, it's amazing what you can do on the PC or tablet.

wow, thanks for that info. i see EA just released Battlelog for Android. going to give this a shot.

It's seriously amazeballs. I can't believe that all of the external features haven't gotten more press and praise. What they've done is light years beyond any other game in terms of cross-platform media. I literally sit here and game on the left monitor and keep track of what's happening on the entire map on my right monitor... even though one is PS4 and the other is PC. I've done it with the iPad too.

Wait, how do I do this? You're saying I can bring up a minimap of the game on my laptop while I play on my tv/ps4?

Yep! Just google "Battlelog" and sign in with your Origin account. As soon as you sign in to BF4 on your playstation, you'll see a blue bar along the bottom of Battlelog on your PC. When you join a server a new option will show up in that bar called "Battlescreen." Click that and you're good to go. It's darn slick.

They've done a terrible job getting word out on some of BF4's most cutting edge features. It's a real shame because no other game is doing anything remotely as extensive as Dice is.

So let's talk sniper rifles for a minute. I just unlocked the 2nd one, haven't had time to play with it much. But damn that first one is frustrating. I understand you don't want to overpower these things, but it can be quite difficult to hit a moving target from 100's of yards away. But even if I do hit them, it doesn't matter. Outside of a headshot, it seems impossible to kill them in one shot. Then the scope zooms out, reloads and zooms back in... and of course they are gone.

I'm really hoping the first sniper is just a crappy gun. Anyone get any further with these?

I'm no sniper, but the ones who have given me trouble are the ones that get high up and work in tandem. They spot for their team (which is really the purpose of the class in Battlefield world) and suppress you as they each fire at you. Because they're high up it's difficult to shake them, and within two or three shots between the two of them you're dead.

Those same snipers on the ground or even a couple stories up are just cannon fodder.

I played last night when I was absolutely lit up. (3 neat scotches, I believe) I went on a total rampage for over an hour. My wife was cracking up watching me.

Anyway, I think the map design in BF4 is outstanding. It's so much better than BF3 and BF2. Aside from one or two maps, everything seems "deliberate." What I mean by that is they didn't just create an open space and start dropping in houses, office buildings, and generic trailers all over the place to create cover and realism. They spent time on the actual terrain and shape of the land. They focused on choke points and map flow.

Just my ramblings. I thought their maps in previous games were pretty blah and forgettable (except for a few notable ones from BF2). Most of what's in BF4 is gold.

Not that I'm excusing the state they released BF4 in, but that was a PS update not a BF update, and there was no hint that it would solve any BF issues.

I get your frustration, but just hang in there until they release a patch that specifically addresses the SP crashes. I won't even touch SP until I know others have made it through without problems. Not wasting my time that... like you said... f that garbage.

Yea I'm getting lots of boots from servers. Also I haven't been able to be able to play one round of conquest. It's still damn fun though.

I REALLY like the game, I REALLY hate the issues. I assume they will get it fixed soon though. I'm very eager to play conquest, or an server with 64 players. I'm looking forward to the mayhem that brings.

Some random musings after playing for a week:

Voicechat

I am still boggled and highly disappointed that no one talks in this game. It blows my mind. There is so much potential, and this is one area where the consoles really shine over PC, yet no one on PSN seems to notice. My guess is this is caused by three things: 1) It's a carry over from the PS3 days when no one had a headset. 2) The mic included with the PS4 sucks because it's not an actual headset. 3) Voice chat isn't emitted from the speakers by default when no mic is used, which would serve as a good reminder that it's there in the first place.

It's a shame because when a squad is working together - even without voice chat - the results are out of this world. Which brings me to:

OMG REVIVE YOU IDIOTS

Every time someone spawns, your team loses a ticket. You can literally STEAL kills from the grips of the other team! It's so bloody simple yet so few people bother to do it. I'm not saying you should be careless about it - make 100% sure you don't get yourself killed (and me killed again) doing it, but come on, man! I think the best squad composition, at least for Domination and TDM, consists of at least two medics. Three plus an Engineer would be even better (because he can blast the snot out of an area).

Useless Snipers

Goobers hiding on the edges of the map with a sniper rifle need to DIAF. And I'm not talking about my opponents. I'm talking about the knob-polishers on my team or, god forbid, in my squad. You guys are useless to me and you're a liability. You're one less mobile spawn point, you're not able to support your squad with ammo, health, or revives, you can't cap points, and you suck at sniping. Even if you didn't suck at sniping, Domination doesn't need snipers. AT ALL. PERIOD. Best case scenario you go 15-0 or something (as if) without helping your team in any other area at all. Cut yourself.

Map Clutter

Getting stuck on 4" high obstacles is also grating on my nerves. While I think the map design in BF4 is the best in any of their games (and it blows Ghosts out of the water into little pieces), they need to pay much better mind to how well players will or will not be able to traverse them. Anything that isn't core map geometry or a major structure should have collision disabled. A 4" step-up should not require jumping. Because that's retarded.

Conquest or SP anyone?

I know DICE is swamped, but several game modes have been unplayable for a week now, which is totally unacceptable. Domination will probably continue to be my favorite mode (I'm not that big into the huge vehicular warfare), but I feel for others who bought it to play Conquest, which is the game's claim to fame. Also others have wasted hours in SP only to have their game wiped clean. This game needed another month or two easily. And since they're obviously stilled tied up fixing the PC issues, my guess is we're stuck with this for a bit.

DICE is famous for releasing Battlefield iterations in a complete mess, but BF4 might be the worst among them. This doesn't make sense since it seems more like an iteration on BF3 than a ground-up game. Will they ever learn?

These complaints aside, it's still the most fun I've had with a game in a very long time. I'm probably one of those "dudebro" types you guys talk about when referring to the lower class of gaming. And that's fine, it is what it is and I've accepted my place in society. But I don't get into the niche indie games or the deep sci-fi stuff. Give me a good shooter and I'm happy. The last good shooter I truly enjoyed was the first Black Ops (and I played it up until I unplugged by 360 last Friday). BF4 fills that void and then some.

TBH i not even planning on firing this game up until they fix the server issues

I rarely lose my connection to a dom server. It's maybe happened three times since Friday.

Conquest and SP are a mess though. They had to disable Commander mode because it was crashing servers whenever one joined.

Voicechat needs to start happening, I'd agree with that. But it's a vicious circle. I don't put a headset on because no one else does. And I'm sure they don't because I don't have one on.

As for snipers, there are probably a lot of people out there like me. Desperately trying to upgrade their sniper weapons so they can be effective and possibly finding out sniping is pointless. I've been trying to snipe in Obliterate, but I don't know how useful I've been. I feel like there should be a role for snipers. They should be able to wreak havoc if they can hit their shots from a distance, or at least give the enemy infantry something to think about.

We will see as the game goes on if it turns out to be a role that needs to be learned and requires a ton of skill (which is fine by me) or if it ultimately proves to be mostly worthless/underpowered.

Makes sense. I haven't played Obliterate so I know nothing about it, so can't comment on how sniping affects it. In Dom there are just very few opportunities for snipers to make it worthwhile.

Zavod 311 is actually a good map for snipers. Two decent snipers can lock down B if they can get to the roofs and stay there. But all in all, the game type just isn't well suited to sniping, unfortunately. Each player is a very precious resource when you're trying to manage three different domination points. I love playing against a team that has a bunch of snipers, because it's so much easier to hold the points. I might get sniped and die a bit more, but it's totally worth the trade-off!

This is why they need to sort Conquest out ASAP. Snipers have a much larger/useful role to play there. In those maps, a lone sniper can hold a point all by himself while spotting across the rest of the map. Huge benefit.

i always play with my headset on but get dissapointed by the silence, only one time i heard someone talk and it was at the end of the game commenting something about being the #1 player in the squad

Also, nothing pisses me off more than a squad with 2 other guys camping at the edge of the map in domination, freaking useless

I skipped conquest on BF3 (360) because it just didn't have the same feel that I remembered from BF2. I was so excited when I learned 64 player conquest was returning on next gen consoles, but I haven't been able to play a single conquest game I instantly get disconnected from the server.
