Burger King blows. Had the 2 for 5 cheeseburger special. The burgers were the size of Oreo cookies. It was dry and devoid of any burger flavor. Wtf happened to this chain?

Ya, and Burger King's chicken sandwiches on that 2 for 5 I just did not like.

YOu also have to talk quality (which is a major part of "value")

Carl's (ne Hardee's) has generally been up there compared to others, but I-n-O stands above all others in that space when ti comes to sourcing their food.

Anything McD's puts out at the same price isn't really comparable, because you are talking $4 of mostly sawdust compared to I-n-O's beef.

I think that's an exaggeration, and in-n-out's enjoyability of the product matters as well as the sourcing. Which is where it comes in as not bad, but overhyped.

Well because of this thread I went to popeye's today.

They don't have the $5 box - my location is kind of sleazy, they try to hide the box when it's on promotion - but they had a new item.

'Magnollia chicken' is some sort of breaded chicken, with a side (red beans and rice my pick) and a biscuit for $5.

Some of the chicken was fine, some was actually rubbery inedible.

Tried the BK "Mac & Cheetos" today:

http://www.bk.com/menu-item/mac-n-cheetos

I think it was 5 for $2.49 (should be 10 for the price!). They are maybe a little bigger than a puffed Cheeto. The macaroni is actually pretty good - really creamy, not crazy salty; I would definitely buy standalone mac & cheese in a small tub from BK if they sold it (Boston Market-style). It's basically a stick of macaroni & cheese, rolled in ground-up Cheetos, and then fried. The aftertaste is pretty good (if you're a Cheeto fan). I wouldn't say they're like phenomenal, but they are pretty decent.

Also I can't remember if I reviewed the BK chicken rings or not - I'm not a fan of the chicken fries at all, but the chicken rings are like flat little donuts & are super awesome. I gotta figure out how to clone those at home! Apparently White Castle sells something similar; there's a Youtube copycat recipe here that uses ground chicken:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQPhaGS_tRI

I'll have to give these a try in my airfryer...

Huh, I wouldn't have expected the chicken rings to be much different than the chicken fries.

I'm sure it's the same ingredients & cooking process, but the delivery system is 1/10 chicken fries vs. 10/10 chicken rings.

Sam's Club cafe:

1. Berry yogurt: Soft-serve ice cream (or froyo? they called it yogurt iirc) with a berry compote. Surprisingly good. I've been extremely disappointed with all of the local soft-serve ice cream available this summer...Baskin Robbins, Carvel, McDonalds (their cone), and Dairy Queen have all switched to this corn-syrup-laced whipped fluff. It's not ice cream. It's not even soft-serve. It's meh is what it is. I'm sure the Sam's Club stuff has corn syrup, but it actually tastes like actual soft-serve - right taste, right texture. Plus it was like $1.49 for an adult-sized cup

2. Chocolate soft-serve: Came out of the same machine as the vanilla did for the berry treat above. Tasted like a Frosty from Wendy's, except mixed with cocoa powder (i.e. kinda dark & cheap-tasting). Meh.

3. Pizza: Giant slice of pepperoni pizza. It was actually pretty good, I would buy one again! Way better than Dominos imo.

Not sure if cereal qualifies as fast-food, but I came across a new one from Kellogg's called Tiny Toast. I got the strawberry flavor:

http://www.cerealously.net/review-g...-tiny-toast-and-blueberry-tiny-toast-cereals/

Reminds me of that French Toast-flavored Cinnamon Toast Crunch from when I was younger, although even smaller & not hard on your teeth. Flavor is surprisingly good out of the box, very sweet despite not having ridiculous amounts of sugar. Milk mutes the sweetness quite a bit, but not in a bad way. It's good as both as a snack & as a cereal in a bowl. My family loved it. Wish I could find the blueberry flavor to try!

But on a more serious note, I am kind of picky about shape, taste, and texture. The chicken fries aren't thick enough. If you've ever had good deep-fried mozzarella sticks, they are usually pretty thick. The chicken fries are like eating pencils. You can eat a whole box of chicken fries & it never really feels very satisfying, like you had an actual meal. I have the same problem with eating pocky, the Japanese stick candy. You can literally eat a whole box and be like, meh.

The chicken rings, otoh, are more substantial, even though they are pretty flat. If you've ever had those new flatbread bagels, it's like that - you don't think they're going to be all that good, but as it turns out, they are pretty dang good! I would taken chicken rings over even their nuggets any day. Side note, I wish they still had their finger-length nuggets with the pepper on the outside. The new ones are McDonald's clones and are not all that great. The chicken tenders from the past were way better...nice thick crispy exterior & good flavor:

^^^ That looks gross. The chicken is probably processed in China too. No thanks. Even though this is fast food thread, there should be some standards.

I make some awesome popcorn chicken at home, try this recipe out sometime:

http://catch42.pbworks.com/w/page/81958367/Chicken Nuggets

Well, they're more nugget-sized than popcorn chicken-sized, but they are pretty dang good, especially spiced with curry & then dipped in a good sauce like fry sauce.

I ate at a In & Out Burger for the first time last week while on a trip to Vegas. From all of the hype ive heard about In & Out I was really disappointed. the only plus side is it was a cheap meal.

They were indeed, much better. I abhor McDonald's nuggets, and naturally can't stand the BK ones now either.

McDonald's Lobster Roll:

$8.99 - pricey for a McDonald's sandwich, but considering Panera is selling their lobster roll for $17.99, it's a bargain. For a reason too...it's BLAND! I ate it, but it wasn't really enjoyable. Surprisingly, it actually looked appetizing instead of just a thrown-together like most of their burgers do. It needed salt, which I didn't have access to at the time, but even that wouldn't have made it great, just better. This was nowhere near McRib level (well, the McRib's of old, anyway). In summary, it's not terrible, but I wouldn't really say it's worth getting "just for the fun of it" because it's just kind of boring and nine bucks can get you a heck of a lot more food if you shop around.

McDonald's Steak, Egg, and Cheese McMuffin:

Disappointing & would not buy again. Aside from the breakfast sandwich muffins having gone downhill in quality, I had two issues: one, the steak flavor was more like crappy sausage flavor mixed with that mystery-meat Salisbury steak garbage you had growing up, and two, I had like three huge pieces of cartilage in my steak patty. I'm not talking about tasty edible fat pieces, I'm talking about chicken-style cartilage that I couldn't even chew through. The first one made me gag & want to throw the whole sandwich away, but for the sake of the review I decided to give it a fair shot & finish it, only to find two more shoe-leather pieces in it. I mean, the sandwich is like three inches long, I have no idea how they could have screwed it up this badly lol.

Fortunately, the McGriddles are still pretty decent. Also, their pancakes (well, "hotcakes") are amazing. One of the best non-homemade pancakes out there imo.

Flavored Oreos:

I've been going through these one by one. From what I can remember:

1. Red Velvet Oreos with cheesecake filling: imo these slightly edge out regular Oreos, they are pretty dang good. I know that's heresy, but they are worth trying!

2. Thin Oreos: These are actually fantastic. A bit more crispy than regular Oreos. You'd think they were dumb & gimmicky but they are really good & have become a staple snack in my cupboard. I didn't care for the chocolate-filled chocolate Oreo thins, too dark-tasting.

3. Chocolate-chip Oreos: Too sickly sweet.

4. Cupcake Oreos: These are supposed to taste like a Hostess cupcake & somehow they nail it without being grossly sugary.

I'm still a double-stuffed fan tho, even if it is a lie.

Yeah I have to travel for work once in awhile & I've been disappointed in places like Sonics, Checkers, etc. The two that I really ended up liking a lot were Chik-fil-a (oh man) & Carl's Jr. (Hardees?). New England is terrible for quality fast-food availability, so I always try to sample as much stuff as I can when I'm on the road without getting sick from eating out all the time :D

Just had my first Dunkin breakfast. Wow, pretty bad. Their coffee is absurdly bad. It is an insult to water. Had a steak egg cheese bagel and while it was hot, it was lacking any sauce so it felt so dry.

Had a glazed, a solid "meh" at best and pretty small for $1.

1. Having previously been off gluten for 5 years & off corn products for a couple years, all of their donuts just taste like corn syrup to me. The Whole Donut is ten times better.

2. Their bagel breakfast sandwiches are pretty lame, very dry ime too. I recently discovered Bruegger's Bagels, which is loads better, but I can still do better than that with just a few supplies from the grocery store.

If I need breakfast in a pinch, I either go with:

1. McDonald's $1 sausage burrito (small but pretty decent)

2. BK's croissant breakfast sandwiches. I usually get the King or some other loaded one that has meat, eggs, and cheese. The only other real competitor is McD's McGriddle.

Yeah, the original BK chicken tenders from years ago were the best. They were far better than McNuggets and at ~8 yo when your primary culinary exposure is Fast Food, BK chicken tenders/fingers was like a rare fine-dining treat compared to the more common forced choices of the McD's McNuggets.

Steak n Shake is super greasy and disgusting. The only thing worth getting at BK are the Whoppers (Texas Double Whopper, Angry Whopper) and their fries. Everything else at BK is blech.
