has any of you with enough memory tried skyrim in ramdisk?

with or without mods?

does it make any difference if you are running a lot of intensive mods?

I'm not sure why this would be a good idea. Lost on shutdown, and limited in size by a bit. I googled this fast (try that...) and the youtube video I saw shows a dramatic reduction for him.

However, my load times in Skyrim on an 840 Pro were already mere seconds really.

I have 32GBs of RAM and have been mulling doing exactly this. Losing the ramdisk on shutdown is almost a non-issue, the tower should only be off in the event you've lost utility power anyway. The program I've been considering, DimmDrive, advertises that it syncs with your Steam Library and can shift games to/from the RAMdisk as needed.

Currently, I run Skyrim on RAID 0 SSDs and the load times are such that I don't even blink about going back and forth through area transitions just because I forgot something minor. I'm not sure how much benefit I would get in Skyrim from the RAMdisk. But, I have a very large Steam Library and not enough space on my SSD array to install everything to do.

well i think there are programs that will automatically save any data to storage from the ramdisk when you shutdown and then automatically load any data when you boot up

ever any problems with ssds when using large mods like stutter

I run 2 250GB SSDs in my system for a reason :) OS drive and steam/symlinked game drive. Either way, even without RAID0 I see no reason to jump.

Sure, but that doesn't account for power loss, BSOD, crash of the program running the ramdisk and so on.

If you run the program from the ramdisk, there shouldn't be a problem storing.. you can store the game saves/ini/etc in a real drive (usually in my documents).

I've decided to try my first ENB - RealVision. I've tried multiple instructions to install it including the RealVision description page on Nexus and various videos I've watched on Youtube. Whenever I get through all the steps and I try to launch Skyrim through NMM, I get an error message saying that the Skyrim Launcher has stopped working. Through various Google searches I found out that if I delete the d3d9.dll file from my Skyrim game folder the game will work albeit without the RealVision ENB working.

Have other people experienced this? What can I do to get a decent ENB working?

System:
Intel i5 Quad Core 3.2 Ghz
8gb G Skill Ares Ram
MSI Geforce GTX 770 Twin Frozr 2GB OC
WD 1TB 7200rpm HDD

so what do you think

agree skyrim had much of the content it needed except for the unfinished civil war content and also the bards college and the vigilants and the map needs 2 times as big in each direction which adds up to 4 times as big. however they could have gone 3 - 5 times as big in each direction needs more small content and more wilderness and wildlife also they never made the falmor mod

The civil war in plenty rich, the vigilants were made both scapegoats and sacrificial lambs for the DawnGuard, but they definitely needed more crap for the Bards College. In fact I was hoping one of the DLC's would add lots more misc. crap in each city to investigate and interact with, but that never happened.

And thanks to the MMO, I doubt we will see any more official content.

the civil war should constantly be going on even when you are level one

remember how the area south of whiterun was supposed to be swarming with imperials after the dragon attack?

never happened

think that a small amount of vigilants could make a home at the castle of dawnguard

they could offer aid and healing to the dawnguard

Tried playing Morrowind again. Forgot how clunky the interface was.
Definitely need that Skyrim mod to be completed.

Either that or Bethesda needs to remake Morrowind.

Finally found this thread, had to necro this out of the dust for a moment.

I have questions.

I see that GamersGate has the Legendary Edition on sale, it's only $10, and it includes the three official DLCs of course. However, I already have the vanilla version on Steam. If I buy the Legendary Edition (specifically because of the DLCs that I do not own) then what's going to happen to my vanilla version? Will it just turn into the Legendary Edition (named as such in my library)? Or will that purchase count as an added new game in my library and I'll end up with two Skyrims?

If anyone can answer this I'd appreciate.

Does GG sell steam keys? I think I have both version on Steam, and while they do show as different games, I just load the complete version and it all works fine.

Alright, for $10 I just thought I'd do it anyway, result being that I don't end up with two Skyrims in my library after all. It's the same vanilla install but the three DLCs are downloading now. I thought it was worth it for the price, it's essentially $3 per DLCs, nice, considering that just one of them is about $20 normally. It's a good coincidence since I'm getting "back into" Skyrim (heavily modded though), haven't played in about two years by now. So yeah, a bit late to the party with those DLCs but I'll finally get to see what they were all about.

The Legendary Edition will replace your original Skyrim in your Steam Library. You wont have to redownload it, or at least you shouldnt, although you will have to download the new DLC. Still it is very much worth it if you are willing, as not only is the DLC worth it, but by now most mods require all DLC just to even work at all.

I don't have Skyrim yet although I've thought about it during Steam sales, etc. Just haven't pulled the trigger. This deal looks to be what I've been waiting for. But, as asked above, buying from Gamer's Gate, does this give you Steam keys to activate or do you have to load through a GG portal or how does it work? Have never used GG before (honestly never heard of them before).

Sorry, late reply.

But yeah GamersGate sells the Steam key. I'm not sure if it's always like that though, maybe some of the games they sell are for other distribution platforms (never really looked into that, but I suppose it's possible). I've only bought three games from them so far (in about three years, so I rarely buy from them), but I've never had problems.

Specifically for Skyrim: Legendary Edition it is indeed the Steam key. After you buy it you have to wait approximately five minutes or so (there's a counter that normally says to wait 10 minutes, but sometimes you get the key before that) and then you check your library (your GamersGate's library of course, not Steam's), click on your purchase and you should see the key appear on the right pane.

And that's about it, then go on Steam and activate it.

String Count Issue

A new limitation in modding has been discovered. It's always been known that too many script-heavy mods installed in one game is a bad thing, but just recently the reason for this has been discovered. It seems the .ESS file format the saves use has a string count limitation of 65,535, due to the table being saved as 16-bit. It's also been discovered the table can be saved using 32-bit and, although save game tools will load the save, the game will not. This is yet another limitation that has been found within the aging game engine.

As of the time of this release, there hasn't been a fix for this issue created by the community. Therefore, users need to be aware of the string count of their saves. This can be done by using the TESV ESS Files Editor tool and looking in the global data table 3, in the papyrus subsection. The vanilla game with all DLCs and USLEEP installed will have ~28,000 strings. Add a full installation of STEP on top and the strings will sit around ~32,000. So STEP users do not have to worry too much about this limitation unless they are adding a lot of script-heavy mods that aren't included in STEP. Some mod authors will be able to prevent their mods from storing strings with the correct scripting skills, but many will not, due to design. The best advice currently is to be aware of the issue and to limit the amount of scripted mods users install.

There is a very good article with links to more information here.
