Um, their BANDITS. they don't know the meaning of the word share. Each Bandit has their own stash and woe to anyone who violates that stash. it more or less explains why you can stealth kill them off one at a time and the others don't care. ;)

Well, since they have guards patrolling at different areas, those handful of apples in each barrel is meant to be their lunch, so that they don't have to leave their station? :colbert:

Touché :p

Hard to say--it looks like 1.4 release is imminent, so it's hard to say what will or won't be broken very soon. Probably the most important si the SSE fix, assuming that isn't fixed in 1.4 (looks like it is)

After that, probably SkyUI, which makes a very good stab at fixing the broken menu system, though it is not yet complete.

With 1.4 is going to be the mod toolset, so expect an explosion of new mods out in the next few months.

So I'm probably going to get the PC version of the game in a week or so, and I should have a good enough machine to max everything and use higher res textures as well. What are some must have mods? I know that's been asked plenty in here, but I wouldn't know how out of date any of the suggestions are.
Skyboost (or whatever it's called now) is a must. Improves performance for everyone. Then again, it's possible the 1.4 patch implements the optimizations of Skyboost, so it may become unnecessary (like the 1.2 patch did with LAA).

SkyUI is great for sorting. I never really used the default UI but I've seen it on the Xbox version, and SkyUI is a pretty solid improvement. There are a few different map improvements; I use one called Realisitic Map with Roads, which mimics the look of the original map, but adds in all the roads so you can figure out just how you're supposed to climb a cliff or what have you.

As far as texture mods, I really like the XCE (Xenius Character Enhancement) pack. It's a series of mods that address the major issue of crappy player models without much of a performance hit. I added Hi-Res packs for NPC Clothing and Armor, because it's silly seeing a high-res character model in a low-res outfit, but those texture packs can get pretty big (over 1 GB for the HD armor).

I like Realistic Water Textures by isoku and the Enhanced Night mod which adds a ton of stars and a colorful galaxy. Both of these offer better immersion for basically no performance hit. Same with Improved Dust Particles; basically no change to performance, but the game looks way better for it.

Glowing Ore Veins is a great mod provided you don't consider it cheating to be able to spot ore veins from half a mile away. Useful, but I could understand why some people wouldn't want it.

The Skyrim Flora overhaul is highly recommended by lots of people, but honestly, I don't see that big a difference when using it, other than a massive hit to performance in certain areas (outside Riften drops from a solid 60 to 48). If you've got the rig for it, it does look better, but for most people, the performance decrease isn't worth it.

There's also some mods that improve your housing situation; one adds a full smithing area to the basement of your house in Solitude (forgot the name of that one), and the Dohvakin Hideout adds a large basement with connections to all the houses you can buy (haven't tried this one, seems a little ridiculous to have warps to all your houses).

You might look into the crafting mods. Being able to make arrows is a pretty important thing if you're an archer. Reweighed Potions makes it easier to roll into battle without potions taking up 50 pounds of inventory. There are lots of mods that add new craftables like new weapons or jewlery, but I haven't tried any, so I can't recommend them.

I'd say the absolute must-have mods to start with are Skyboost, SkyUI, Realistic Water Textures, Improved Night Sky, Improved Dust Particles, Xenius Character Enhancement and Glowing Ore Veins. If you've got the system power, definitely get the HD NPC Clothing and HD Armor mods. The other stuff is more about how you want the game to play; these mods will make the game look a lot better.

Oh, and the Nexus Mod Manager is a pretty good way to keep everything sorted and up to date. This thread at NeoGaf has some great information and examples of lots of different mods, including all the ones I mentioned.

Yeah, I'm going to have to check out those mods, as soon as the update is released and those are verified. The night sky one sounds pretty awesome, on top of the HD textures.

Are those texture packs Vmem heavy, CPU heavy, or RAM heavy? I'm about to go up to 16gb from 4gb, but still on 1gb 5850 (which performs marvelously in Skyrim) and Phenom II 965 BE.

I've been using Night Sky since 1.0 without any updating, and it seems not to affect my performance at all. Can't speak to the others.

Closing in on level 60 and 261h played. Maybe it's time my character get married. Is Ulfrich The Unhygienic Killer Of Kings available? Drusilla could chop his head and say "Consider this a divorce..." Total Recall style. :whiste:

I haven't even met the bum since we were about to be executed. I should hop to Windhelm some day...:colbert:

To be fair, I have been specifically avoiding anything even remotely related to the Main story line. So it could take a WHILE. (level 29 and almost 50 hours so far).

The texture packs seem more RAM heavy than anything; they definitely impact the loading time of the game (not loading between doors or fast travel, just loading the game from the main menu). But I think it's all size dependant. The night sky one is infintessimal compared to the HD Armor pack, so I would imagine that basically everyone could run it as smoothly as they would the vanilla game.

Come to think of it, the texture packs must be impacting vmem, particularly in areas where you'd come across a lot of the textures (cities, for the most part). If you're trying to budget out vmem usage and worried about texture packs clogging it all up, you'll be fine with the basic XCE pack, realistic water, enhanced night sky and enhanced dust particles. XCE will have some impact on performance, but it's absolutely worth it to get characters that look significantly improved. The water, sky and dust mods will have very little impact on performance.

Update - Definitely is impacted by RAM. My computer had been on for a while, a few different programs running, and I started to get dropped textures when I loaded Skyrim. Not even the textures I had installed, some of the base textures from the game (the tanning rack, certain wall textures, etc.). Rebooted and everything was fixed. So you'll definitely be limited by RAM.

92 hours, level 52. I finished and now I have little desire to keep playing. I almost wish I had extended things out some more. Once you finish the main plot lines there is little incentive to keep playing, but those 92 hours were pretty darned good. I am however hoping for some decent DLC in the near future.

Finished it. Just over 150 hours, Level 79, all major quests done.

Second last level was hillarious.
The one with the temple with Draugr. I kept using unrelenting force to push Deathlords off the ledge. That never gets old:). Wish I figured out that you had to hold down "z" to use the higher level shouts.

And this is more or less the reason I rate this game so highly. So many games today are like 12-15 hours and then done. And most of that time is just frustrating. The fact that you can play Skyrim 90+ hours and still have stuff to do, AND it is fun almost all of the time too boot.... Makes it so much better than the rest of the games out there.

I tried to explain this to someone who wanted to say that DS3 was a good game. There is no way I could play that game for 90+ hours. Got boored and frustrated after 5 or 6.

I'm about 10 hours in.

Should I go on down to the Nexus and get some mods for this first playthrough, or just play this beast as is?

And if so, what mods should I get?

I would stay away from any mods that change the basic gameplay. Things like more craftables, Tytanis, home upgrades, etc., may help increase the longevity of the game, but they also don't give you a chance to experience the developer's vision, and I think that's important on your first playthrough. Granted, when you've put 30 hours in you may think "why the hell can't I craft arrows or circlets even though they're already in the game?" and go get mods for that. But I'd avoid the major gameplay overhaul ones on a first run.

I would recommend some of the graphical improvement mods if your system can handle it. Enhanced night sky, realistic water textures and better dust particles all have minimal impact on performance and make the game look better without changing any of the gameplay. Xenius Character Enhancement is an absolute must if your system can handle it; it upgrades the character models so people don't look like they're in an 8 year old game. HD textures for armor and clothing also help with immersion. There are lots of different HD texture packs; I'd stick with the ones that are most highly recommended at skyrimnexus. Those can take up a lot of room and eat up performance though, so be aware of that.

Look a few posts up in this thread; I posted a sizeable list of some of the more impressive mods available now and a link to a thread at another site with lots of information.

I recommend you get SkyUI right now, before you get used to the default crappy interface.
Please note you will need the script extender and mod manager to use it properly.

Yup. Just got 'em, thanks.

And you're right about the crappy interface. Thank God for user support.

I think this has already been posted, but SKyUI still is not complete, correct? the only interface change I get is in the item menu--powers, merchants, everything else is stuck on default.
