I wouldn't expect the device to have a 1080p screen, but I definitely expect it to be able to handle 1080p video output

I can give you one major reason why this didn't happen: Last I checked, all the HD movie content on the iTunes store is 720p. If Apple isn't distributing it, they probably won't seek to support a type of media if it means a major difference in hardware requirements.

How do you "multitask" on a stone tablet? :hmm: Might have been funnier if they had checked off "widescreen" instead.

Here's the problem with the Apple tablet... it fucking sucks. It's not just a generation behind, it's multiple generations behind. Did ANY OF YOU who are defending this piece of crap even read ANYTHING on CES2010? Did you not see the multitude of AMAZING products coming out that simply make this look like it belongs in 2007? Simple case, the Notion Ink Adam has hdmi out, usb ports, sd slot for expansion, will have 16 or 32gb internal storage, wifi, blue tooth, 3g ability(we'll have to see how it's used), it runs on android, it can multi task AND it has a Pixel Qi screen. Not to mention they were talking pricing around 400? That's just one of the MANY they were showing at CES. Hell ASUS is coming out with an EEE Tablet which will probably blow this piece of crap out of the water. It really isn't that good of a product and the only reason it would/probably will make any sort of impact is because of idiots who flock to everything Apple because it's "cool."

The problem with those devices is in the user experience. iPad may not do much, but what it does do, it does it well. I still don't think it has enough to make me add it to my roster of smartphone and laptop though, but that doesn't mean it "fucking sucks."

user experience? have you used an android device? the user experience isn't much different than an ipod os device(itouch/iphone). they look to be far better products with much more to offer and better technologies. i'm sorry the hardware inside even though they're touting their powerful 1ghz a4 processor is probably on par with the hardware inside the zune hd, the original tegra chip/setup and probably is rather far behind the tegra2 chip/setup. it does a fraction of what products that are already out do and doesn't do them well. the ONLY reason this will even make a splash, if it does at all, is because there's a piece of fruit on the back and that's it.

Android has come a long way, especially with things like the new photo gallery. But that needs to extend to the rest of the device, and I'm sure it will soon enough. It's that kind of polish that makes the user experience what it is.

I'm kinda glad I didn't wait for this. Instead, I went out and purchased an Axiotron Modbook. The battery life is only a few hours (3-4 max), and it doesn't sleep well (the controller board for the Wacom tablet means it will die overnight if you don't charge it), but if you have an old Macbook, you can get a Wacom-Penabled tablet with GPS based off your Macbook for $630 (on top of the cost of your non-unibody Macbook).

With Snow Leopard, you can flip it portrait.

All I can say is meh.... Definately NOT a "magical" or revolutionary product.

In reality it didn't matter what Apple released, the Media, especially the Tech Press is filled with unabashed Apple fanboys/fangirls and they will make sure the product a success and Apple will sell millions.

Like it or not, the user experience also encompasses itunes. and that is dirt simple to use. I have yet to find anything that matches it for "the everyday user." Not that I use it myself, but I can see where the market is for it. And it's a whole lot bigger than the "i want to drag and drop my own shit" crowd.

The iPad is a cool toy, but at the end of the day, I have to say I'd much rather spend $300 on an underpowered netbook. Sure it doesn't play HD video, but whatever, I can actually get more work done on it.

Now, that might change if more useful apps come out, so we'll see. But I'd rather have an iphone than ipad. Actually, I'd much rather have the lenovo ideapad u1.

And yes, this product was rather underwhelming. Apple will get the fast track to market share though, because no one knows about anything else (and are any of the CES products even slated for Q1?)

Actually itunes isn't that dirt simple to use and I'm constantly having relatives/friends ask me to help them with itunes because it wiped their ipod/iphone or it's not working properly. I don't own an ipod, I did at one point itunes didn't work on 64bit windows so I got rid of it. iTunes is actually a pretty poorly written application that's pretty shitty in all honesty. It just happens to have a huge library of music you can purchase rather easily, one thing I actually do like about it, that make it work pretty well.

Like I said this product doesn't really fit anywhere the only people who will buy it will buy it because they will buy anything with that fruit logo on it. If you don't have an iphone and plan on buying this you're a moron. If you have an iphone and plan on buying this you're an apple drone with to much money to spend... a moron.

Have you used the iPad?

I think this will be the telling experience - how it actually handles, what people use it for. It's going to be INSANE for gaming, I can guarantee that much.

I'm kind of confused about Apple's take on video. From a mass-market perspective, I guess they've got it right - people are like ooh HD when they watch SD on an HDTV, so 720p is probably bonus points for most people. But why not 1080p? Why not let us play our own content? Final Cut Pro can't even author real Blu-ray discs. Macs don't even play Blu-rays. With the non-success of the AppleTV, I don't see why Apple is still pursuing their crap-tastic video approach.

I love Apple, but when they do things like implement iFrame (960x540 30fps), which isn't even real HD (not even 720p!) it kind of weirds me out. I know they're trying to go all-digital, but they gotta do a subscription service like Netflix with better HD if they want to win, I think. I don't know where I'm going with this rant, so there you go :D

This post and your others in this thread just bolster my opinion that anti-Apple people have long since been more obnoxious than pro-Apple people.

You know, you sound just like one of those guys who dismissed the iPhone when it first came out. Is the iPad as revolutionary as we'd hoped? No. Personally I found it a bit underwhelming but at least I could see some uses for it. The thing is that any tablet PC would suffice for what I'm thinking.

The problem I have with what you're saying is that you having never used an iPad are suddenly an expert on it and know 100% that it's a POS? Cause you are coming out pretty strong with your harsh criticism. All I'm saying is let's get this thing out in the wild and try it out before we call it a failure. Should be easy enough cause unless you live out in the middle of nowhere, most major cities have an Apple store. Let's also see what developers do with it as far as app support goes.

After seeing the emulator in the new SDK, I wonder if they couldn't get the bezel down as thin as they wanted...

Much better looking IMO

Yeah but what a pain that would be to hold - you'd constantly be gripping the glass and smudging it. I know the big bezel doesn't look that great, but it's the best design feature they could have put in imo...

I'd imagine the thick bezel is by design so that you can actually hold the thing without touching the screen. Given it's size, it's going to be awkward to hold as it is.

I still don't see how itunes isn't dirt simple to a vast majority of people to use. you browse music, apps, buy. Stick device on, sync. done.

Now, where there are problems, or you try syncing to multiple machines, then it gets hairy. But my experience has maybe had a handful of people do that. The other problem is people don't understand backups, and when their system dies, they are totally confused on how to use it. THAT is almost impossible to fix, heh.

But it's everyday use is pretty easy to use. If your friends and relatives continually wipe their ipods, obviously something is wrong. But for the vast majority I've seen, "it just works" seems to prevail.

That's not to say I'm a huge fan of it. Nor this iPad thing, but you can't ignore the "ecosystem" that apple has created.

Yeah, it seems to me there needs to be a fairly wide bezel on the side facing the user, and since it can be rotated to portrait and landscape, that might be a wide or a narrow side. At that point the thing would look bizarrely asymmetrical if they didn't just use a wide bezel on all four sides.
