I do wonder why they went with a 4:3 aspect ratio - easier to hold? Better balanced? I believe the Kindle has a 4:3 screen as well (800x600 e-ink or something). Just seems like a page would look nicer in 16:9 tall and 2 pages would look nicer in 16:9 wide. Same with movies. But I'm sure I will think differently once I actually get one in my hands to play with![]()
If there isn't multitasking this thing is dead in the water. I can understand not wanting a full blown window'd UI, but I could live with only seeing one app on the screen at a time, and adding some kind of a dock at the bottom to switch.
With rumors of WinMo7 having Natal like gesture recognition, Apple needs to keep innovating instead of letting their platforms get stale.
Here's the problem with the Apple tablet... it fucking sucks. It's not just a generation behind, it's multiple generations behind. Did ANY OF YOU who are defending this piece of crap even read ANYTHING on CES2010? Did you not see the multitude of AMAZING products coming out that simply make this look like it belongs in 2007? Simple case, the Notion Ink Adam has hdmi out, usb ports, sd slot for expansion, will have 16 or 32gb internal storage, wifi, blue tooth, 3g ability(we'll have to see how it's used), it runs on android, it can multi task AND it has a Pixel Qi screen. Not to mention they were talking pricing around 400? That's just one of the MANY they were showing at CES. Hell ASUS is coming out with an EEE Tablet which will probably blow this piece of crap out of the water. It really isn't that good of a product and the only reason it would/probably will make any sort of impact is because of idiots who flock to everything Apple because it's "cool."
i don't get that wide screen complaint.
how big would you want it. or how small and useless would it be in wide screen. it just doesn't make sense.
gesture recognition? so you can flip it the bird when it goes bsod?
Oh and his example of browsing NY Times was hilarious; He scrolls down while saying "with this big screen you can see everything". Then he runs into some embedded flash and all you see is a big empty space with a blue plug in symbol....oops, guess you cant see EVERYTHING Steve, hahahahahahaha.
Not sure why I need those either. Look a small notebook like a x200 or eeepc does it all already and a lot more of it. Tablets are DOA. Thinkpads have had a tablet like PC for like ever and it never caught on.
The eink platforms OTOH have their utility.
yea well a netbook isn't the same thing. if you tried to do all the things shown in the keynote rapidly on a netbook you wouldn't be dealing with snappy response task after task, that net book would just basically die while you ground your teeth, the slowness of the netbook limits its use as an appliance. Its just not comparable, if you watch how quickly and responsive the tablet was there is just no way you can compare it to a netbook. that is the point, you can whip it out and finish a short task in a snap. whereas you have to think twice about the chore of whipping out your netbook, like it or not it is a chore to use. its about thelevel of commitment, and the more burdensome something is to use the less you will actually use it. whipping out a full laptop to do something trivial is a decision..most people would rather skip it no matter how fast their standby resume feature is. such inconvenience shapes usage. and apple seems to understand this.
My take on the iPad;
I just finished watching the keynote and there are a bunch of problems I have with what Jobs said; Jobs said that in order for the iPad to have a reason for being, it has to do everything better than a smart phone and a laptop. It may do a couple things better than one of the other but not all.
Lets compare it to the iPhone;
-Cant make calls or send texts.
-Browsing the internet, reading email and using google maps on the iPad is done exactly the same way as on an iPhone except you have a larger screen.
Pretty much everything the iPad does, the iPhone does the same way just on a smaller screen. Jobs' first example on browsing the internet was viewing the New York Times and how you can see everything. Well if I dont feel like scrolling around a small iPhone screen looking at the NY times, Ill just download the NY Times App. His argument that having this big screen to see everything is pretty weak. The one thing I did like about the iPad is the full size calender, I like the look and functionality of it. The problem is, you cant exactly just shove that big calendar into your pocket and I dont carry a bag with me everywhere I go, let a lone a bag that would be safe to throw an iPad into.
Now lets compare it to a laptop;
-The iPad is small.
Thats all I could come up with. Im sorry Stevie, but the iPad doesnt do anything better than a laptop. If I am sitting at home on my couch I will take my MacBook Pro over an iPad any day. Watching him type on that keyboard while sitting on that couch looked so uncomfortable. I noticed that he didnt do too much typing on that thing, just a short email and a search for sushi on the map. Probably because typing out long sentences on it is a pain in the ass.
Now there is one thing that I left out; eBooks. This is something the iPad does that actually interested me, at first. But, then I remembered what its like to use a Sony eReader and the Kindle. While the iPad is faster, the eReader and Kindle both have those nice e-ink displays. You can stare at an e-ink screen for hours with no problem they are a treat to read text off of. As for the iPad display, cant say I would want to read an entire book off of that display, my eyes would be hurting after that.
Oh, and didnt Jobs say something about people not reading anymore and that the kindle would fail?

Why is he all of the sudden making a tablet for use with eBooks if no one is going to read them?
I think the iPad (I think its a stupid name too) is a cool little device but completely useless. My iPhone suites me perfectly, there has never been a time where I was using my iPhone and I felt that I needed a larger screen. I can not think of any situation where I am out at work, school or some place else that this iPad could be made useful and it definitely wouldnt be useful at home while Im sitting on the couch or in bed. This really feels like a lazy attempt form Apple, like they were getting bored and just wanted to throw something else out there. So they just took an iPod Touch and doubled the size. Not really 'magical' or 'revolutionary'.
Ok Apple, here's how you fix the iPad. Take that little laptop you have that nobody buys. What did you call it? Ah, the Macbook Air. Throw one of Intel's SU series ulta-low voltage Core 2 Duo processors in it. You know, that one that runs at 1.6ghz but consumes just 10w. Or, you could even consider one of those Atoms I've been hearing so much about.
Now we're on the right track. Now take that screen and flip it around. Get rid of that keyboard and trackpad. That should make it nearly as thin as the iPad Mark I. Throw a couple USB ports and an SD card reader for good measure. Now we're talking.
Ok, now take that lovely OS X Snow Leopard you've got there and optimize it for a touch screen interface BUT allow it to run all the same software. Ah, now we have the perfect Mac tablet. Let's just change the name to iTablet for the iPad Mk. II. There, finished.
Seriously, this is what I want. Ok, so maybe it won't get 10hrs battery. I can understand where Apple is going for this but it's just not a game changer. Give me something that can replace a laptop, then I'll buy it.
List one situation that you honestly think you may find yourself in one day where you would require an iPad because an iPhone or iPod touch wouldn't cut it.
