No iPad for me. I can't see much use for it, as I use both an iPhone and MacBook Pro.

Very disappointed with today.

I had hoped that the iPad had more functionality, like - camera for teleconferencing via skype, ability to be a universal remote(ala Harmony 1100), 16x9 display. Such features would have opened-up so many more functions for it.

No mention of OS 4.0 - if it will have multi-tasking then it would silence all of the detractors.

i don't get that wide screen complaint.
how big would you want it. or how small and useless would it be in wide screen. it just doesn't make sense.

I do wonder why they went with a 4:3 aspect ratio - easier to hold? Better balanced? I believe the Kindle has a 4:3 screen as well (800x600 e-ink or something). Just seems like a page would look nicer in 16:9 tall and 2 pages would look nicer in 16:9 wide. Same with movies. But I'm sure I will think differently once I actually get one in my hands to play with :)

errp

think about it.
its a tablet pc, not the ipod max. if all they wanted to do was build an archos video player yes, wide screen 10" display would work fine. the issue is hdtv aspect ratio screens are not useful for anything other than video at small sizes, the height is just too short to show much of a page, and in portrait its too narrow to be useful. so to sacrifice all other functionality for the sake of wide screen video would be absurd. with 4:3 people can use it to do web/apps with kb in either orientation and be fine. its even easier to hold. 16:9 in such a small device is just a nonstarter.

If there isn't multitasking this thing is dead in the water. I can understand not wanting a full blown window'd UI, but I could live with only seeing one app on the screen at a time, and adding some kind of a dock at the bottom to switch.

With rumors of WinMo7 having Natal like gesture recognition, Apple needs to keep innovating instead of letting their platforms get stale.

gesture recognition? so you can flip it the bird when it goes bsod?

Jobs' credibility took a huge hit today saying this POS was second coming. After reading this thread and edgadget I'm still not entirely sure what it is or why I need it.

Here's the problem with the Apple tablet... it fucking sucks. It's not just a generation behind, it's multiple generations behind. Did ANY OF YOU who are defending this piece of crap even read ANYTHING on CES2010? Did you not see the multitude of AMAZING products coming out that simply make this look like it belongs in 2007? Simple case, the Notion Ink Adam has hdmi out, usb ports, sd slot for expansion, will have 16 or 32gb internal storage, wifi, blue tooth, 3g ability(we'll have to see how it's used), it runs on android, it can multi task AND it has a Pixel Qi screen. Not to mention they were talking pricing around 400? That's just one of the MANY they were showing at CES. Hell ASUS is coming out with an EEE Tablet which will probably blow this piece of crap out of the water. It really isn't that good of a product and the only reason it would/probably will make any sort of impact is because of idiots who flock to everything Apple because it's "cool."

Not sure why I need those either. Look a small notebook like a x200 or eeepc does it all already and a lot more of it. Tablets are DOA. Thinkpads have had a tablet like PC for like ever and it never caught on.

The eink platforms OTOH have their utility.

I am not sold on putting a desktop OS like OS X or Windows onto a touch screen devices, particular a slate device that will, most of the time, not have a hardware keyboard. Regardless of the enhancements that Microsoft put into Windows 7, it is not a good touch OS, especially not multi-touch. And OS X is not much better really. The iPhone OS would have been a great leaping off point, just wish that it wasn't their current stopping point.

With the new apps they put on there (calendar, safari, mail, itunes, iphoto, iwork, et al) they have demonstrated that they didn't go full on retard (can't win any awards that way) when designing the device. I like the physical look, though it would have been nice to at least have MiniDP or USB on there. But the lock screen is weak, a 'slide to unlock' in the middle of this big black bar? Why not have it be in the same place, but just float like when you hit the volume or brightness adjustment on a Mac? The home screen.... the icons feel too far apart, I think having one more icon per row would have worked better.

I think I can see where they could go with this thing, especially as developers start writing for it specifically, but put me in the 'wait til rev 2' camp, because if I were to ever get it, that would be when I would.

As for the Ideapad 1U... I once had a vision in my head (i was putting up a clock in the bathroom, slipped, hit my head on the side of the tub, and there it was.... the flux capac... never mind) of a laptop that had a slightly thicker than normal screen... say slightly thinner than the bottom of a MacBook Air. Inside the screen would be 16GB or so of NAND, a battery, a wireless card and the display of course. It would be a 13.3" widescreen. The base of the laptop would have 2 wireless cards, all the usual ports, the keyboard, trackpad, battery and the main hard drive. The whole point of the device was that you could be working on something, and then, at any time, pull the screen off the laptop and use it as a slate. The secondary wireless card in the base would kick on instantly and connect to the screen's card to send the data back and forth, and you would continue doing what ever you were doing since all the current stuff would be stored in the NAND anyway and you would seamlessly transition from laptop to slate without missing a beat.

The IdeaPad 1U is not that device and never will be. I don't care how fancy the concept is, real companies ship and until the device comes out I will reserve final judgement, but a device that goes from Windows laptop to linux slate cannot possibly do what I want a device like that to do.

Also, iPad is a stupid name.

Because they showed a movie on it. Thus, it needs to be wide screen. Screw how everything else works. :)

I'll agree that this is a v1 product and Apple is known for leaving out features just to introduce them later as a reason to upgrade later. To do that, however, they'll still need to have some success with this v1. If it flops, will they try again? What would sales need to be to be considered a flop? Will they drop the price if it doesn't sell (like they did with the iPhone)?

If a third party can't write their drivers, sure. I'd rather have the chance of a BSOD and infinite open hardware compatibility over a closed Mac any day of the week. With that said, it's been a few years since I've seen a BSOD, and I'm sure many others would agree.

My take on the iPad;

I just finished watching the keynote and there are a bunch of problems I have with what Jobs said; Jobs said that in order for the iPad to have a reason for being, it has to do everything better than a smart phone and a laptop. It may do a couple things better than one of the other but not all.

Lets compare it to the iPhone;
-Cant make calls or send texts.
-Browsing the internet, reading email and using google maps on the iPad is done exactly the same way as on an iPhone except you have a larger screen.

Pretty much everything the iPad does, the iPhone does the same way just on a smaller screen. Jobs' first example on browsing the internet was viewing the New York Times and how you can see everything. Well if I dont feel like scrolling around a small iPhone screen looking at the NY times, Ill just download the NY Times App. His argument that having this big screen to see everything is pretty weak. The one thing I did like about the iPad is the full size calender, I like the look and functionality of it. The problem is, you cant exactly just shove that big calendar into your pocket and I dont carry a bag with me everywhere I go, let a lone a bag that would be safe to throw an iPad into.

Now lets compare it to a laptop;
-The iPad is small.

Thats all I could come up with. Im sorry Stevie, but the iPad doesnt do anything better than a laptop. If I am sitting at home on my couch I will take my MacBook Pro over an iPad any day. Watching him type on that keyboard while sitting on that couch looked so uncomfortable. I noticed that he didnt do too much typing on that thing, just a short email and a search for sushi on the map. Probably because typing out long sentences on it is a pain in the ass.

Now there is one thing that I left out; eBooks. This is something the iPad does that actually interested me, at first. But, then I remembered what its like to use a Sony eReader and the Kindle. While the iPad is faster, the eReader and Kindle both have those nice e-ink displays. You can stare at an e-ink screen for hours with no problem they are a treat to read text off of. As for the iPad display, cant say I would want to read an entire book off of that display, my eyes would be hurting after that.

Oh, and didnt Jobs say something about people not reading anymore and that the kindle would fail?

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/01/steve-jobs-peop/

Why is he all of the sudden making a tablet for use with eBooks if no one is going to read them?

I think the iPad (I think its a stupid name too) is a cool little device but completely useless. My iPhone suites me perfectly, there has never been a time where I was using my iPhone and I felt that I needed a larger screen. I can not think of any situation where I am out at work, school or some place else that this iPad could be made useful and it definitely wouldnt be useful at home while Im sitting on the couch or in bed. This really feels like a lazy attempt form Apple, like they were getting bored and just wanted to throw something else out there. So they just took an iPod Touch and doubled the size. Not really 'magical' or 'revolutionary'.

Oh and his example of browsing NY Times was hilarious; He scrolls down while saying "with this big screen you can see everything". Then he runs into some embedded flash and all you see is a big empty space with a blue plug in symbol....oops, guess you cant see EVERYTHING Steve, hahahahahahaha.

on the other hand, anything the encourages sites to avoid/reduce use of flash...a good thing for all.

It's not supposed to be a phone. Do you use your netbook as a phone? This product is supposed to be a competitor to a netbook but not be a netbook. But it's true it's very disappointing right now.

I don't disagree, but something like the Notion Ink Adam is what a lot of people are looking for in a tablet like computer imo. It has the Pixel Qi screen and at the flip of a switch can mimic e-ink, not 100%, but MUCH better than reading a regular LCD on the eyes. It has HDMI out, SD card expansion, usb ports, uses android which is kind of a negative, but it will still be able to multitask and do all the things you would expect from something like that for browsing the web or watching video.

I can see the niche that tablets need to fill it's just the RIGHT kind of tablet hasn't been produced yet imo.

yea well a netbook isn't the same thing. if you tried to do all the things shown in the keynote rapidly on a netbook you wouldn't be dealing with snappy response task after task, that net book would just basically die while you ground your teeth, the slowness of the netbook limits its use as an appliance. Its just not comparable, if you watch how quickly and responsive the tablet was there is just no way you can compare it to a netbook. that is the point, you can whip it out and finish a short task in a snap. whereas you have to think twice about the chore of whipping out your netbook, like it or not it is a chore to use. its about thelevel of commitment, and the more burdensome something is to use the less you will actually use it. whipping out a full laptop to do something trivial is a decision..most people would rather skip it no matter how fast their standby resume feature is. such inconvenience shapes usage. and apple seems to understand this.

List one situation that you honestly think you may find yourself in one day where you would require an iPad because an iPhone or iPod touch wouldn't cut it.

Ok Apple, here's how you fix the iPad. Take that little laptop you have that nobody buys. What did you call it? Ah, the Macbook Air. Throw one of Intel's SU series ulta-low voltage Core 2 Duo processors in it. You know, that one that runs at 1.6ghz but consumes just 10w. Or, you could even consider one of those Atoms I've been hearing so much about.

Now we're on the right track. Now take that screen and flip it around. Get rid of that keyboard and trackpad. That should make it nearly as thin as the iPad Mark I. Throw a couple USB ports and an SD card reader for good measure. Now we're talking.

Ok, now take that lovely OS X Snow Leopard you've got there and optimize it for a touch screen interface BUT allow it to run all the same software. Ah, now we have the perfect Mac tablet. Let's just change the name to iTablet for the iPad Mk. II. There, finished.

Seriously, this is what I want. Ok, so maybe it won't get 10hrs battery. I can understand where Apple is going for this but it's just not a game changer. Give me something that can replace a laptop, then I'll buy it.

+1 on all points. Whole time watching with that stupid blank space between phone and laptop Jobs said ipad would fill, I was like it can't call, like, uh the prime directive of an iphone and it can't run desktop apps, uh like prime directive for Laptop. ipad's missing the two greatest features of a Laptop and a iPhone respectively - i.e. fail.

Seems like market agrees AAPL down -8.59 (-4.13%) today

yea thats a great way to build a $1500 tablet:p aka the failed pc style tablet model. you "say" you want this type of tablet, reality is you don't. the only gap they can fill is for a super fast response instant on device/appliance that lets go do simple tasks at a snap. something that doesn't require the clutter of a whole os. its like the iphone, pc users for the longest time before the iphone dreamed of a phone that ran xp pretty much, and any attempt to get anything near that model was a total failure.

first of all not everyone has an iphone. and browsing the web, watching films, or reading ebooks/magazines are hardly great on an iphone. its too small. its like saying you wouldn't buy a kindle because you own an iphone:p
