The quote states that the planned economic stimulus should be spread among all elements of society. It does not state that jobs should NOT go to highly skilled professionals, but it states that in addition to jobs going to them, we should seek to find ways to employ lesser skilled people as well. In addition, he did not state that the stimulus should NOT go to white males, but that it should go to other groups as well, as if the government is going to spend money to stimulate the economy, it should do its best to stimulate everyone, not just specific groups.

Pretty simple. How you've found something to freak out about with this is beyond me... but then again, the right thrives on outrage.

No it Does not! It is about infrastructure spending. There is all sorts of other ways to get money to other groups. This is SPECIFICALLY about the spending in the infrastructure. Why are we combining building infrastructure with SOCIAL engineering?

I am a civil engineer and I've filled out three applications for economic stimulus projects. The money for bridges and roads will come through the NHWA via the state's DOT. As the money is Federal Aid, it includes strings. The bid documents will include mandatory statements on Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Non-Discrimination and things like all steel must be made in the USA, and full disclosure on lobbying activities by the bidder.

These are not new. These boilerplate statements and contractor certifications are on all Federal Aid projects. The Contractors will bid to do these projects and sign all the documents, certifying that they have complied with all the various strings that are attached to the money. We will hire the lowest responsive, responsible bidder.

In short, I have absolutely no way I can make this money go to any particular party. And unless they start writing new laws, neither does Reich.

CLEARLY, Reich should not have worded his comment they way he did. It really is an indefensible statement. Also, it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to make sure that white male construction workers get the jobs that result from these projects. It's just a silly, and indefensible comment. And it's also not a very big deal. I don't like the comment, but the sky is not falling.

If we get this money, we're going to build a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over a highway, greatly improve a mile of failing roads in a lower income neighborhood, improve the safe movement of bicycles and buses at a busy intersection with failing pavement, and complete a park project by adding an architectural aesthetic foot bridge that was never built after being designed because there wasn't enough money.

And everyone will be able to use these facilities, including white male construction workers.
