I have heard the idea that "regimental" organization focuses on the number of "6". (Seems like Napoleon offered up some lengthy thesis for this type of organization, but hell if I can find the source.) Five was seen as the ideal number of subordinates, with the leader (technically the 6th member) completing the perfect team of "6". Successive levels of leaders would each have between two and five subordinates until each level of membership filled up within an ideal range. Modern militaries are still bound by this type of organization.
