No shit sherlock I never said it wasn't but does that give the right people to be assholes You make it personal as if these people are going out of there way to offend you personally. You think thats high on their list of things to worry about? Believe me its not and they know. And when was the last time you had to deal with a fat person on an airplane? Please.

Perhaps you should channel some of that rage into exercising?

I don't know. When you boil it down to basics social mores have always been enforced with shaming to start with.

I should have been more clear; I was thinking about addictions and compulsive behavior when I made that post.

I know it's completely anecdotal, but my experience has been that shaming the affected individual often drives them deeper into the self destructive behavior.

Funny you should mention addictive behavior:
Shaming isn’t the total panacea, but it must be an integral part of the solution. There’s no better example of how shame can change perceptions than smoking, which was once considered cool but is now viewed with utter disdain. Sure, cigarettes are expensive, but that’s not why smoking is down. It’s because society made a conscious effort to shame smokers. Try lighting up in a bar with co-workers, and you receive dagger-like stares. Do it outside, and people immediately move away, because smoking is regarded as disgusting, and therefore, the smoker must be, too.

Shaming work to drive down the smoking rate.

Damn you facts getting in the way of liberals wanting everything to be equal :mad:

The point of this thread is combat the many, many people that are saying it's OK to be fat. That they shouldn't be ashamed, and that it's not a bad thing. We're combating fat shaming with extra strength shaming. Maybe the next time you're ordering your lunch somewhere you'll get the salad instead of the fried chicken "because of that prick Nebor on the internet."

How many times do I have to tell you that I'm not a liberal? You really need to get over your us vs them mentality. It's not healthy.

As for the article, I don't buy it. Shaming probably has has some effect, but so has raised awareness to the dangers, increased taxation, regulations on indoor smoking and general societal trends.

Forms of shaming. Having to stand outside, segregated from everyone else? Like the article says, shaming isn't the answer, but it's part of it. And if it's gone entirely no one will even look for a solution.

I wouldn't call that shaming. I have plenty of friends who smoke, and they usually go outside to smoke together. Often I'll go out with them so I don't feel segregated...

I'm not sure what you mean by that. The health benefits of losing weight will still motivate people to find a solution.

In the end, my opinion is that you should motivate people via positive reinforcement, not by making them feel bad about themselves.

The belief that there is no difference between things that commonsense says there is a well "massive" difference between is a very liberal idea.

As for the article, I don't buy it. Shaming probably has has some effect, but so has raised awareness to the dangers, increased taxation, regulations on indoor smoking and general societal trends.

Like for instance how smoking used to be cool and now its shamed?

:confused:

What are you talking about?

I can't think of one person who quit smoking due to shame. I personally quit due to the health risks.

Hell, my mom has been shaming my dad for 20 years about his smoking. Now he just tries to hide it from her...

Taking society as a whole, smoking is very much frowned upon now and levels of smoking are falling.

Frowning on something!= shaming.

Just as correlation != causation...

I like you WB, but you're not going to change my mind, so I'm gonna end my involvement in the discussion amicably.

Fat people and smokers can kill themselves in their own homes on their own time. I don't need them on airplanes or in bars or theaters and I don't think smokers should get a pass just because fat people do.

However, fat people are offensive to all five senses. Smoking only offends 2 at most.

Fat people don't cause cancer idiot.

Fat people cause innumerable other dangers when they're put in any situation with able bodied people. Fat people require help to move in a fire or emergency. Fat people also put undo stress on all structures they occupy, all pipes they use, and they occupy too much space.

Don't get me wrong, I think they are both disgusting. They both need to be treated as equally repellant.

A lot of the anti smoking propaganda here was pretty much about shaming people.
Don't inflict passive smoking on your children, etc. Hell a lot of the ads had children in them talking about how they missed their deceased parents who'd smoked.

I like you WB, but you're not going to change my mind, so I'm gonna end my involvement in the discussion amicably.

I'm not talking about shaming in the way Nebor is doing it, I doubt that would work at all.
But the "hey don't you want to play ball with your kids" or "Don't leave your kids early, get healthy and stick around" stuff is worth trying.

Cheers for keeping it amicable given some of the input.

She probably is overweight. "Overweight" means a relatively small amount of excess fat, not a huge ass, double chin, and rolls everywhere. Most people just have a skewed perception of weight and classify morbidly obese as overweight, and overweight as skinny.

Sadly, the obese mother isn't using this as an opportunity for reflection, and the girl will almost certainly be unarguably fat in a few more years. They'll blame it on genetics.
