The new Karate Kid movie is an abomination

I'm not a movie snob and not one to hold a grudge against those that remake childhood classics. I liked The A-Team... Transformers was enjoyable.

But this... this was something unholy. Why the hell did they have to remake The Karate Kid EXACTLY like the original? I'm all for updating a classic, but if you're going to stick to the exact same plot and include much of the exact same dialogue, then what the hell is the point (err, other than $$$ and Will giving his son a starring role in Hollywood)?

I just got more and more annoyed as the movie progressed, with my anger culminating at the end when
oh come on, if you've seen the original Karate Kid, you already fucking know what happens
.

There is no need to remake a movie if you're just going to mimic the original.

/END lame rant.

You answered your own question, lol.

Haven't seen the remake, hadn't planned to. A friend who saw it and said it sucked badly.
Also the title is wrong for a China setting ... Karate is from Japan, Kung Fu is from China. Should have been called Kung Fu Kid right?

Right, but ask the average audience member if they could tell the difference between a Japanese person and a Chinese person.

I liked it well enough as a throwaway film, though I think Jackie Chan wasn't a great substitute for Pat Morita. Not sure why they jumped to China instead of Japan if they were going to keep the 'Karate' motif, as has been noted.

Yes, they tried to shoe-horn it in there by having the mom get the two mixed up. Kung Fu Kid is the international title so its obvious they were just trying to bank off the Karate name in the USA.

But yeah, I agree with the OP that is was a total fail. Two hours of Will Smith's kid acting like Will Smith culminating in an ending with little kids doing moves their supposed masters can't do. Uh huh.

I think that was did it for me with the movie. I was willing to suspend of disbelief up to a point but they busted past that line. The original was much more believable with a mid-20s Macchio playing a teenager and a 50-something Pat Morita.

i disagree.

it was MUCH better than i thought it would be. it is a lot better than the original as well, as these kids actually know how to fight and it is real fighting, not the fake me out karate that was a buncha white folk who looked like they practiced for a week before filming started.

the only thing that i thoght was stupid in the new one is how quickly he got so good at karate. yea it seemed pretty fake how he got so good so quick, but i just put that aside and still enjoyed it a lot.

i think jackie chans acting in this movie was also very very good, probably the best i've ever seen him act. and will smith's son is going to be a great actor as well in the future.

😵

Anyway, a sequel will definitely have much more potential, 85lb 11 year olds can't be believeable at delievering serious blows no matter how skilled they are at performing techniques. Jaden will certainly fill in and grow up pretty quickly.

it was fucking horrible.. jaden was a pathetic actor even worse than Ralph was..
they could have at least changed the story a bit more.

absolute waste of 2 hours of my life.. Macgruber was a better movie than this.. and it was fucking terrible too.

It was a good movie. I thought it was the second best out of the Karate Kid films. It wasn't an A movie, but a solid B/B-.

Isn't his sister doing a remake of "Annie"? I think that Jay-Z is actually writing the songs (no joke)
