The new Karate Kid movie is an abomination

The sad thing is that if they make a sequel the people in this thread bitching about the remake will also go watch and then bitch about the sequel.

i disagree.

it was MUCH better than i thought it would be. it is a lot better than the original as well, as these kids actually know how to fight and it is real fighting, not the fake me out karate that was a buncha white folk who looked like they practiced for a week before filming started.

the only thing that i thoght was stupid in the new one is how quickly he got so good at karate. yea it seemed pretty fake how he got so good so quick, but i just put that aside and still enjoyed it a lot.

i think jackie chans acting in this movie was also very very good, probably the best i've ever seen him act. and will smith's son is going to be a great actor as well in the future.

you are dead to me.

it was fucking horrible.. jaden was a pathetic actor even worse than Ralph was..
they could have at least changed the story a bit more.

absolute waste of 2 hours of my life.. Macgruber was a better movie than this.. and it was fucking terrible too.

i don't think jayden was bad necessarily, but the story just wasn't believable.
kids were too young, and you don't see too many black guy/asian girl interracial couples.

I agree with you completely on the kids are too young. The black dude/asian thing has been growing. In real life I doubt he would have a problem because he is a good looking kid. And his skills were way better than Danielsin 🙂.

kids were too young

The forced nature of the kids being too young was really laughable during the scene that Mr. Miyagi - I mean, Mr. Haan, bails out Ralph Macchio - I mean, Jaden Smith.

The bully is roughly the same size/age as Jaden. All his kung fu friends are roughly the same size. But during that scene, 4 out of the 5 friends are all six feet tall and well past puberty. Apparently they realized it was an asinine idea to have Jackie beat up a group of middle schoolers, so for one scene of the movie, we are to believe that a 12 year old leads a pack of ninja 18 year olds.

Of course, after that scene, we're back to small kids for the rest of the movie.

the original is good only for nostalgia reasons. as an actual movie it is pretty terrible with horrible acting and fighting.

i still like the original but i know that it is a pretty shitty movie ... just like three ninjas.

Haven't seen the remake, hadn't planned to. A friend who saw it and said it sucked badly.
Also the title is wrong for a China setting ... Karate is from Japan, Kung Fu is from China. Should have been called Kung Fu Kid right?
I have not seen it either, for much the same reason. And calling it the Kung fu Kid is still not entirely accurate. Kung Fu is excellence at anything; you can have strong Kung Fu at cooking. It would be more accurate if named for whatever system/s is being taught.

Good martial arts movies are rare, and having one that is also mainstream? Even more so.

Haven't seen it. No way in hell will I believe chan (whom I really like in most of his stuff) will do as good or better job than morita did.

You could say the same about nearly EVERY movie from the 80s. All the acting sucked and production was shit. Better of Dead isn't a shitty movie, yet the acting and quality is horrific.

The remake was stupid, unnecessary and forced. Smith wanted a vehicle for his kid, and used it. His kid was too young for the role as many here have pointed out. That story just DOES NOT translate to an 11 year old. it just doesn't.

Remake it with a 15-17 year old jaden Smith and I will enjoy it SLIGHTLY more.

Wait what happens at the end? The link below implies no crane kick. 😵

http://www.firstshowing.net/2010/review-sonys-the-karate-kid-shows-remakes-how-its-done/

I like how the reviewer says there is no "sweep the leg" and no "You're the best" song. Ok, I admit, it's a totally different movie.

Instead of "sweep the leg," he tells his student to "break the leg."

Instead of a montage of fights set to "You're the best" we get a montage of fights set to Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Higher Ground."

Oh, and instead of crane kick, we get some oddball cobra kick
(which coincidentally involves standing on one leg, jumping, and kicking to win the final point).

The new Karate Kid was better than the old one. Now that you've seen this one, watch the old one again. That movie was pretty awful. One of the crappier 80's movies. Right up there with Weird Science and Gremlins.

I agree, but they still both suck huge turds, I'll never for the life of me understand why people get their panties in a bunch over a horrible 80's movie being remade. Now that you mentioned it watch Weird Science get remade and the dudes on here throw a hissy fit.

I haven't seen the remake and I've had a hard time believing the critics who say it's just as good as the original. The most obvious flaw is that your typical American kid can't relate to the protagonist kid living in CHINA. Daniel Larusso lived in San Diego and dealt with the kind of problems most kids could relate to. It had nothing to do with culture shock.
