The new iPhone is rumored to have a 5.5" variant

That's the trend these days. Is bigger better? Even the smaller iPad is the better-selling model.

Will you buy a 5.5" iPhone?

I would need to hold it first. I don't get a good sense for how much bigger it is over the iPhone 5 in relation to my hands, pockets, etc. I wouldn't mind a bigger screen. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

I think they should offer a pocketable version (like the 3.5" 4S) and a larger version (like the Galaxy Note 3). That way you can have your choice. I love big screens, but I'm going to have a hard time giving up my 4S...

I'm kind of hoping they shrink up the bezel and can squeeze a 4.2-4.3" in a similar size phone as the iPhone 5/5S. I personally won't buy a phone larger then 4.8"

agreed, I rarely use a headset for calling so holding up a phablet is ludicrous.

It took years for Apple to go from 3.5 to 4". They're not going to jump 1.5" overnight to 5.5". I expect 4.5" iPhone.

There is a 4.5-4.7 version coming out in September...the 5.5" will follow later.

They will be much thinner than the current iPhone5, but either one is way too huge for a realistic daily phone IMHO.

Love the size of the 5S. Very rarely do I find myself wanting a larger phone size. I will consider a 4.5-4.7 though. If they can keep the size down I think it can be very good and will sell extremely well...And may be my next phone.

I find the current crop of 5'' Android phones to be a bit too big as is. 4-4.5'' is the ideal size for a cell phone, while still being able to control it with just your thumb. I wouldn't buy a giant iPhone.

I briefly went from the older ver iP 5 to samsung note 2 for the bigger screen and while the bigger screen was nice, I found the note 2 size near totally unportable. It was too big to lug around as a phone and I tended to leave it laying around here and there. Left it at restaurants, at work, at friends house. Bigger is not necessarily better beyond looking more impressive.
Less than a year of samsung, I paid full price and went to the iPhone 5s and for a phone THAT is absolutely the only way to go. If you need a pad sized device, get a pad, not a phone the size of a pad. Beyond that, using my 5s is so much more pleasant than my old android note 2. Apple really does do it better.

Can't stand huge phones! The 5s is perfect for me. If it is a little bigger, I'd be fine with it, but at 5.5", no. I think those big goofy Samsung phones look absolutely moronic. Too big for a phone and too small to be as comfortable to surf on like an iPad/mini. I want a phone to be pocket size, and if I need something bigger, I'll use an iPad Air or mini. Anything in between is pointless IMO.

Maybe we're a bunch old guys, but hopefully Apple is actually aware that many of its customers want a slightly bigger iPhone but not anything larger than about 4.9" screen size. Apple has always said this about the form factor, but we'll see this year how much they actually mean it.

OTOH they also realize the phone growth market is in the Far East, where phablets are much more in demand and they have to cater to those buyers as well.

One reason why Apple has been so conservative is that the Cocoa Touch UI designs largely depended on absolute layout, where some widgets could grow to accommodate different resolutions. But it's never been as flexible as resolution-independence, which is why Retina displays are a 4X scale-up of the predecessors. I don't know if they're moving towards Android-style relative layout (which can mean non-tablet optimized UIs) but they almost have to if they introduce new resolutions.

Then it wouldn't be 16:9 anymore. And if they introduced yet another screen resolution/aspect ratio, developers would have a shitfit.

If they go bigger, it'll be to maybe 4.5" at 720p.
