There were some food riots in 2010, but I suspect that 2011 is going to be much worse.

The price of food is directly related to the price of fuel. Fuel goes up = food goes up.

Get ready to turn that flower bed into a garden.

wasn't the food riots where Ben Richards was framed and ended up on a game show?

You must be new around here, I wrote about this years ago.

Drives the resident Republicans nuts because they say it's not possible.

Prepare for huge shock Jan 31

I'm going to start a company that manufactures cake~like food patties from soybean and vegetable products and address world hunger. We can call it "The Soylent Corporation".

Anyone care to invest?

You can change the name after the government forces you to go "green."

With Obama and company destroying our currency, I've no doubt that food prices will rise.

No, no, see it's high energy prices causing food prices to go up. Don't ask why energy prices are up though.

Natural gas is used to make fertilizer
Price of natural gas goes up = price of fertilizer goes up = price of food goes up

Diesel is used to transport food
Price of diesel goes up = price of transportation goes up = price of food goes

Diesel is also used in the machines to harvest crops like corn, so you get a double whammy from the price of diesel.

Plus, we are still using crops like corn to make bio-fuel. This means there is less corn to go towards food. As the demand for bio-fuels goes up, this will also drive up the price of food.

Compound all of that with crop failures in Russia last year and drought and floods in Australia this year.

I don't get it. There are farmers all over the USA that are paid not to produce food.

That is to keep prices high for certain foods. If farmers grew too much of a certain crop, it would flood the market, drive prices down, and farmers would not be able to recover their expenses.

No food wars in the U.S. anytime soon... so much food is thrown away simply based on how it looks on the store shelf.

And the rest of the world has to suffer because of it.

I'am not sure how Americans (with our sense of entitlement) would handle a food shortage. As far as I know, there has not been any kind of ration system in place since the 1940s and World War II.

Surely we have all seen videos of an angry mcdonalds or pizza hut customers screaming because their order was taking too long. How would that same person react if they were told "no cheese burger for 2 weeks",,,,, or something along those lines.

How would Americans handle a food shortage like what the rest of the world has to faces on a daily basis? For some people, a little starvation would probably be a good thing.

I think I read somewhere that drinkable water was going to be the next big shortage. Besides - the link says 'rise in prices' not 'shortage'. They are not, necessarily, linked

People in the south would be okay... my mother in law probably has a 2 year supply of canned vegetables.

People in the U.S are sensitive to food prices though... anytime the Kroger brand of bacon is $2.49 here it gets wiped out. I see prices spiking way before there are any actual shortages. People in the poorer countries would suffer. Rather than run out of cheeseburger beef, McDonalds would scour the globe and pay top dollar for product.. leaving the locals with less.

Its sad that our government this it can control these markets and causes these spikes in price.

Ok, lets pay people to NOT farm or pay people to destroy crops. LOL. Only a "progressive" would think of something that stupid.

Yet around here, the biggest supporters of farmer welfare are Republicans and Tea Partiers.

Would you rather pay .05 cents for a cucumber, or $10 for an ear of corn?

Not growing certain crops makes perfect sense from a financial point of view.

Lets say that some farm magazine said that cucumbers were going to be in high demand next summer. The floods in various parts of the world has destroyed much of the world cucumber crop. A lot of farmers think "man, oh man, I'am gonna hit it big with cucumbers". Everyone and their brother grows cucumbers, the market is flooded 4 months later, price of cucumbers hits rock bottom from over production, and the price of everything else goes up - because nobody is growing anything else. Due to the low prices on cucumbers, farmers can not recover their investment into seed, fertilizer and fuel, and they have to sell the farm.

Dont you think its nice being able to go into a grocery store and have a selection of affordable food? Instead of certain things being cheap and other things being expensive.

If you dont like the price of food, grow your own. That is what I plan on doing with corn, beans, potatoes,,,,, and some other stuff this year.
