i think it's positive the doctor is older

you really should watch the let's kill Hitler episode if you haven't, A LOT if important things get explained in that one.

if by explained you mean a metric ton of gibberish, then yes. that entire arc sucked mercilessly and the sooner river song is forgotten, the better.

River Song breathed new life into the show, even if the arc itself has become convoluted. I actually think she should be on more often.

Yeah, I'd like an older doctor. It may actually help the show get a little more popular. I held off on the show for a while because based on the audience I thought it was mostly for teen girls. I eventually started with Eccleston and got into the series that way. I did like Smith as the doctor, but I'm not sure I would have gotten into the show if I started with him. Tennant was amazing though. I'm sure girls will fall for the new doctor as well, but at least it's going to be a bit harder now that he's 24 years older than Smith.

I can't even describe how much I wish he'd play him as a Time Lord Malcolm Tucker.

(You've seen The Thick of It/In the Loop, right?).

I want to see him incapacitate a dalek by sheer force of swearing.

it just seems odd that he was already in the show, and also played a part in the spin-off. other than that, i have no issues one way or the other and look forward to seeing how he takes on the role.

Don't know him.. but he's British and "mature", so can't go wrong.

P.S. BBC really whored this one (Doctor changeover) out with a special...

way way back when he was fighting giant snakes.

Everyone seems to have totally forgotten about that film.
But I enjoyed it, and it was kind of quirky (different).
I never realized he was in it.

I assume this is the film you got that from

The Lair of the White Worm is a 1988 English horror film based loosely on the Bram Stoker novel of the same name and drawing upon the English legend of the Lambton Worm. The film was written and directed by Ken Russell and stars Amanda Donohoe and Hugh Grant.

Angus Flint (Peter Capaldi), a Scottish archaeology student excavating the site of a convent at the Derbyshire bed and breakfast run by the Trent sisters

I agree, I hoped it would be an older Doctor, too.

So many of the younger generation, are going to see this "new" doctor, as "their" hero, in some cases, the first ever Doctor Who they see.

This 'older' Doctor, might also give the script writers more flexibility to come up with even more exciting story lines, and inject more pizazz into the show.

Peter Capaldi's previous role in Torchwood is not that uncommon in British TV, especially soaps, where actors hop between the shows.
It means the recruiting people, are already aware of their talents and abilities, and they are use to the way the show(s) work.
This means that there is less risk and uncertainty taking them on in the "sister" show(s).

River's the reason I stopped watching. I preferred the old days, when the show was about the Doctor doing stuff, not the more modern days, where they've been shoving in unnecessary romance for a character who didn't really have romance for close to 50 years. I would hope the older Doctor will cut down on it, but given how much sexuality Moffatt puts in his writing, he'll probably have a companion who digs older men that remind her of her father.

Yes.. shows from 20+ years ago do have a certain puritanical charm, don't they...

Amy was a prophet in Fires of Pompei. Colin Baker was galefreyian guard in Davidson's run. Martha was an extra in the cyberman/ghosts episodes. its a long tradition.

River Song is going to be pissed. I can just hear her now, "I married a young hot guy. Now he's grandpa!"

Think about it from The Doctor's perspective: "I married a living woman, and now she's a crispy corpse, who occasionally shows up as a ghost!"

I don't know anything about him, but I hope he brings a level of seriousness to the role that's been lacking with Matt Smith.

Huh? Matt Smith is like the most serious doctor from the last 30 years haha. I actually thought he was a little too cold & harsh when he first started out!

River was an example of one of those concepts where the more they showed the less interesting it became. She started out well enough, but by the time they showed who she was and where she came from she was over-saturated and I had gone from being interested in the character to wanting her to go away. It wasn't all her fault though, Moffatt has this weird thing where he overwrites the women roles to the point of expense at of the men. Jekyall had only one male "good guy" the rest were all villains, and even then his wife was written as over strong to the point of being a badass for no real reason. in Who we went from having a Time Lord who always seemed to be one step ahead of everyone to one that had to be saved by the companion most of the time. You're really going to tell me that River could fly the Tardis better than the Doctor can?

This is one of those moments where I wonder if I'm watching the same show as other people....

Moffat seems to want to make up for lack of good roles for minorities and women in the past all at once. An agenda rarely helps scripts. Let's face it, Rory was pretty much "the tin dog" for too long.
