The new BMW M3 CSL is finally here - BMW E92 M3 GTS

No one in this thread has made that claim.

I think sssnails post triggered my response, since it happens in other threads too. I don't know if it's my english or if he's implying that there was a time when manuals shifted faster than automatics.

It's already proven that the right automatic can shift quicker and be faster than a stick; technologies, grow with them.

fits 4 people too?

heh, well I'd be shocked if someone buying this GTS actually used the 'backseat' for anything, considering it's filled with a roll cage and no seats to speak of 🙂

The regular M3 is a very practical, livable daily driver. This GTS should be viewed as what it is, a track duty specialized machine. Yeah it could technically be driven around as a regular car, but I think most people who would buy something like this would seldom if ever do so.

lol but seriously here in LA 1M doesn't buy you an awesome house.

That's pretty true. I had an average apartment there in the mid 90's on Wilshire, and it was almost $2k a month.

This is a million dollar home in Santa Monica : http://realestate.yahoo.com/Califor...rizona-ave-2:10689264136050193735b2e2c7ad6e8c

2br, 2bath :/

$1m in the vast majority of the country buys a really nice house though. Depending on where you look or if you build, you can get things like

5 or more bedrooms
Deluxe fixtures/appliances
Covered pool
3-car garage w/pit
guest home
private library/study
etc
etc

Can't get that in the really high-end markets, but $1m in my part of DFW buys this :

http://realestate.yahoo.com/Texas/Prosper/970-broadmoor-ln:2832a4671696187a2b9aa836ae3640

"Gorgeous Custom Home w- high ceilings, handscraped wood & slate floors,Huge mstr wing with pvt patio+sitting area, rain head walk-thru shower, and pond views.Gourmet kitchen w- Wolf & SubZero apliances,Granite, wine fridge & more.Completely sep 1100 sq. ft. apartment over detached 4-car garage. Custom pool w- spa and rock slide, outdoor entertainment area next to the pool."

Quite a difference, eh? That'd be a $5m-$10m+ house in the decent parts of LA

what are you living in?

also many with higher end cars have surprisingly modest homes....some are probably even renting in this market.

May as well bring Hitler into this thread to make it complete.

Total... waste... of money. I can build my own CSL replica for half the price. It won't be as pretty but it'll be just as fast.

That isn't the point...you can ALWAYS build a comparable car for less when your spending $100k+ on a car...BUT what can you buy in the $170k price area that is better of thereabouts? This is a 'track focused' car...

You could get a Caterham 500 or whatever is the dogs bollocks for 2 seater open wheel to practically DESTROY all these $170k+ cars on a race track that but isn't the point.

I changed £1M for $1M for you yanks 😛 £1M is about $1.6-1.7M 😛

$1M is only £650k and that doesn't get you much in London...but the point is if you have a $1M house and aren't spread too thinly and have some decent investments you could afford to indulge in a $170k toy, or maybe you need to be in a $2M house? Well f0ck knows mate but either way if your 'thinking' of buying a $170k car your not sweating it too badly...

Let me rephrase that. I can buy an M3, rip a bunch of junk out, add in bunch of welded junk, and have a track ready CSL for half the price.

Summary: I can do it better!

you can build a mustang better too.

You have missed the point.

Please, expound on the "better car for less".

Audi R8 5.2, more horsepower for less money. You could buy the R8 and still have money left over to buy a daily driver too.

Wooooooshhhh... You know what that was? It was the GTS flying over your head.

To answer Mariok, in high powered cars, yes AUTOs have always shifted faster (then there's sequential, but we won't go there). In slush boxes, you'll be better off in a stick.

Holy shiet, you should go and do that for a living, because you can do it much better, for cheaper.

And the Audi R8 5.2 is still a far cry from a ZR1. Neither the ZR1 or R8 are track-ready for hardcore racing duties though.

Repeat until understood : a GT3 RS, the M3 GTS, Viper ACR, and so forth are track-ready pro racing cars, their target market could give half a shit if you can make a 800hp car from a $10k starting point + $10k in mods (doable with a C5). Their target market will very well likely already have a very high-powered streetable DD already anyway. A non-RMS Audi R8 *IS* a daily driver to those kinds of folks.

Who cares about their target market and the wild assumptions of whether they would purchase this car or not. This ain't the pro car club of America, it's Anandtech garage.

The price is ridiculous until you consider the resale value of a certain rare collectible this car will no doubt become.

Let me reiterate all the "missed the point" peeps. The point is this car is a (somewhat) lightweight NA BMW track car with an included fire extinguisher , for use on the track for exactly $170k for pro racers who only care about the track and don't give a crap about non track ready cars.

Hmm, good point.

So whats your point then?

I'm sure they will sell enough of these to cover their costs. BMW are pretty savvy with making £££.

Yes it's over priced to those that can't afford it. I know I can't and if I had a lot of £££ I'd pick other cars over it but I'd probably pick one up anyway 😛. I've always been partial to a rear wing on a car 😛

Seeing it in action makes it look better then the pics above.

The upgraded brakes and suspension are going to smash an R5 on a race track...yeah it costs more so it should be dam well smashing it!

Damn son, perhaps learning about not only curb weight but also what the interest in a limited run of about 100 cars means to people.

Even a stock M3 weighs less than the R8.

What is the point of all this arguing? It exists, it will be bought by those that see value in it. Pissing and moaning about how you "could" build something comparable is pretty pointless. IMHO.

Yeah so you buy the R8 and strip it for track. I can't imagine someone who is willing to buy a track toy would even know how to drive it.

Quoted for lulz. You don't understand how the Euro folks do racing. Probably 90%+ of these GTS's will be sold over there, if not all of them.

Yes, they're expensive, much more so than 99% of AT could afford.
Yes, they're not as fast as cheaper street cars (but those street cars aren't race-worthy out of the box either)

I don't know what else there is to say really.

Audi also has a GTS racing variant of the R8 : http://www.topspeed.com/cars/audi/2009-audi-r8-lms-ar67524.html

Are you gonna bash that too, as $333k is pretty expensive 😛

Not a great buy when you can get a GT-R or R8 for way less. I would rather have either of those cars.
