The new beauty and the beast is awful. Yes, I created a thread for this.

I went in with an open mind. It sucks horribly.

1. Acting overall is terrible. Emma Watson was not a good pick as a provincial girl Belle. She's a capable actress, but 90% of the time- she did this awkward grin staring at CGI characters for 90 mins. You can't blame CGI for this, because there are tons of movies where IRL actors & CGI characters did a great job

Crap eating grin.

2. IRL character adaptations are awful. Gaston should've been much more buff. There are plenty of guys who could've pulled this off better. Beast sucks too- looks like a 150 pound cat than an imposing BEAST.

3. NO FACIAL EXPRESSIONS of Lumiere, Cogsworth, Chip & Mrs Potts. These characters CARRIED the original movie. They could've went with ANY CGI art direction - but they chose this stiff version, which results in them not engaging the audience. This is my biggest gripe.

This remake sucked. It made Disney pretty penny, but it's awful. Period.

I watched it last weekend and thought it was great. I didn't know there was so much singing in it and thought I was going to hate it because of that because right from the get go it's a lot of singing, but it didn't bother me at all.

You didn't know it was a musical?

I didn't remember how much singing there was, but I also thought maybe they would modernize it somewhat like they've done with some of the more recent movie "updates". I didn't really remember the plot that much at all anyways, it wasn't one of the Disney movies I watched a lot as a kid. I get it confused with Cinderella a lot when I just think back on the movies.

Yeah, did not like it either. The Gaston piece was a delight in the animated version and it was absolutely awful in the new movie. :(

She liked it. Thank goodness she's not a crabby anal-retentive forum-dwelling walnuts like us.

But if you're implying I couldn't watch B&B as a man, you're wrong. I freakin' love Disney & Pixar productions and would have had no problem watching this alone.

It was pretty bad. They missed the mark with several parts of the movie, which is pretty common for shit like this. Cogs/Lemi were barely identifiable whereas in the cartoon they had a very simplified art style which made them relatable/humanized. In this they went the 'Transformers' approach where there's a billion little widgets moving at all times, so you can't really tell that a_thing is doing something.

Music was poorly done, you can tell Emma had only a brief modicum of vocal training for the role. I don't have a specific issue with that, because she's an actress, not a singer/vocalist. Hollywood needs to get over their insistence with using actors/actresses in singing roles. This is part of the reason all these movies were animated to begin with.

Beast wasn't garbage, from a vocal standpoint. I actually think he could have ripped apart a solid number but they never let him actually use those pipes of his. They added new songs but nothing for Beast which would have been more appropriate than ... whatever that was with Belle's past. CGI was good, but he did kinda look like a big fuzzy kitty instead of a monstrosity like he should have been.

Set/prop designers did their jobs well, that all looked fantastic. Gaston's gay sidekick was completely shoehorned in and unnecessary. Gaston was meh, not nearly boisterous enough. Townsfolk were fucking *bored* the whole time, no idea who's job it was to crack the whip on them but they were clearly asleep too.

GF and I gave it a 4/10, somewhere between SW:EP1 and like, the Phantom remake, or something.

There aren't a lot of buffed out guys who are decent actors and can even sorta sing. Maybe a 30 year old Hugh Jackman. So Luke Evans wasn't a terrible choice.

My wife said it should have been John Cena :D I think that would have worked better too.
But yea, this movie was absolute garbage.

I saw it on a long flight around the planet. I wish I didn't.

The animated Disney film is probably my favorite from the "masterpiece collection." This live action remake was garbage and there is absolutely no reason for it to exist.

Considering Watson was very auto-tuned, I'm surprised whether an actor can sing is even a concern in these remakes.

Intonation isn't the biggest problem; as you mention, it can be fixed. Ultimately it comes down to vocal quality.

Are you suggesting "blatant cash grab" isn't a valid reason for existence?

I know this was a necro bump - but since I didn't see it originally.

@Zeze It's called political correctness. That's what it is, that's what is rampant, that's what they are shooting for. Gaston isn't many - -his right-hand man is gay... and gay for him at that.

Though I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the newly released Aladdin remake...

Will Smith as the Genie and singing, :p:D.
No I didn't watch it, a co-worker across the next table during lunch break was playing a "bootleg copy" in her laptop and I could hear someone singing which I assume was the genie.

I have very little interest. My friend and I just happened to discuss this last night.

That actress playing Jasmine looks wooden as hell. In the original, she's full of expressions, seductive, and yada yada. I have little problem with Will Smith doing his own thing as a genie. I support him.

The movie just looks bad. ALL remakes look terrible. Live-action animal CGs look like taxidermis.

I'll still watch them since Aladdin/B&B/Lion King were utterly amazing in 90s.

Ugh. She suffers from Sansa/Sophie Turner syndrome. Same crappy wooden plank expression.

Singing was bad. Will Smith - No offense, I'm sure he tried hard - but he was bad. I guess expectations were too high given whom he was filling in for.

Also the PC crowd was in full force. Any and all sexuality was removed from all parties - including any SLIGHTLY risque outfits such as below. In addition, Jasmine wants to be the Sultan - because, you know, women empowerment we can do it too!

OH! And Jafar. Oh fucking god Jafar... if Genie wasn't bad enough, Jafar took the cake for hands down the worst character. There was nothing more pathetic then hearing such a... un-cunning voice from someone that is meant to be the equivalent of an evil genius.

Hehe pretty spot on.

Also they were correct - Will Smith had inserts of stupid rapping. That was fucking dumb as well.
