The concept from the original series is completely intact. The show has simply been improved and modernized because (let's face it) the original was a pretty crappy show that just happened to have a great concept. Kind of the like The Matrix.

Indeed. "Lost in Space" still has fans. So does "Buck Rogers", and you can't tell me THAT show wasn't crappy!

i disagree, in retrospect all those shows look like crap, but i remember watching them when they aired and i didn't watch them saying, "boy, what a crap show i'm watching". to judge them based upon todays expectations of shows and want them to be the same level as 24 or Battlestar Galactica of today is just plain stupid.

shoot, go watch Planet of the Apes, what crap right? but we didn't think so at the time.

I almost forgot the most important part...the theme song...the friggin Battlestar Galactica theme song, and the awsome intro monologue...now all we get is a lot of frackin drums.

I liked the new series much more than the original. Heck i didn't even know the original existed until i saw the miniseries pilot, and i was so hooked i downloaded the original... but i couldn't even watch past the third episode.

I guess you expected it to be a certain way, and because it's not, you're disappointed. Coming from me, and EVERYBODY i know that has watched they, they all liked it (and none of them except me has seen the original), some more than others of course.

I like the new BSG a lot. I have never seen the old one, but if I did I would probably find it too campy for my tastes.

I do agree with you on the point that there is too much sex in BSG, and it's being done to bring in a horny male sci-fi demographic. Or at least that's what the producers think. It did not work for Star Trek: Enterprise (T'Pols prominently displayed hard nipples, body rubs, etc. were not enough to save the show from cancellation). I could do without the horny encounters of Baltar and his fantasy cylon girlfriend. The episode introducing the Colonel's horny wife was also gratuitous. That element of the show could be (and should be) tuned down.

I like the new show a lot and have no problems with any of the items you mentioned. Maybe I would if I hadn't seen what happens to shows when they cater to zealot fans of and older B-quality show and not to a good story. I would rather them change anything and everything so long as the story is good. The bimbo serves her purpose well. We can relate to baltar better because of it.

I do have a few quibbles with the show, but it is by far the best science fiction show I've seen since B5, which had a much more shaky start than BSG. This is leaps and bounds above farscape, which was probably the second best sci fi show since B5, though mostly by default.

This is without a doubt the best original series that SciFi has ever shown. It's too bad it didn't land on HBO... now THAT would be a damn good show.

Edit: BTW, I like the new theme. I guess again it is due to being wary of the star trek theme songs, which until enterprise were all crap due to catering to zealots. I don't doubt that they could have redone the old one better, but the new one is pretty good.

In the behind the scene for BS Galactica.. the main actors explicitly said that this remake would piss off the original fan boys.

Okay, I suppose it is unfair to judge an old show by today's standards, but in making the new series that is what the new producers had to do (and did).

The old show was pretty campy though. The whole tragedy of the humans' plight was glossed over. And the motivation of the Cylons was completely missing. Addressing those issues are the major changes in the new show. And I think they did wonderfully.

My only real beef thus far is in regards to the water crisis. Did I miss something, or did they forget to resolve it? I understand that the prisoners on the prison barge were going to extract the water, but they left us hanging there, went right to the Starbuck crisis, and then jumped out of that system in (it seems to me) an insufficient timeframe to have gotten the water. Please don't spoil if this comes up later in the season. I am only watching each show as they air and not before.

They are on their way to the system with water when the Starbuck crisis happens.

- Human Cylons - Ever since the introduction of 7of9, every science fiction show has to have some bimbo in a skin tight outfit...so they introduce the concept of human looking Cylons...but not just human looking...rather horny nympho girls gone wild bimbo Cylons...I like my Cylons robotic and shiny thank you.

Because this is a more mature show, and they wanted the show to be more complex and emotional. Hard to get emotional over a shiny robot.

- Baltar - how did this character go from a manipulative mastermind to a pansy ass fruitcake with a British accent and hallucinations of the horny nympho girls gone wild bimbo Cylons...Baltar should be a strong and power hungry player...not a whipped and cowardly wimp.

What you've seen is the first half of the first season. They're obviously building the character up. I'm not too sure if you just started watching the series, or if you've been downloading the UK releases... but they're up to episode 14 now, and you can see Baltar coming out as somebody who will be power hungry and powerful (i don't want to give you any spoilers if you haven't seen that yet).

- Flashbacks - the continuity of the new show is sometimes hard to track because they constantly use flashbacks.

eh, i don't have a problem with it. It doesn't happen that often.

- Gender changes - I like the character that plays Starbuck, but she is not Starbuck...Starbuck was the Han Solo of the Galactica, and they should have kept it as such

That's how i see Starbuck. Sounds like you just have a preconceived notion on how things should be, and because they're not, they don't work for you. Or you're just sexist and can't see a woman being as strong as the current Starbuck is.

...they could have introduced a tough talking female lead pilot that goes head to head with the character of Starbuck...and Boomer as an annoying Asian chick...sigh.

Works for me. Infact i think Boomer is one of the more interesting character in the show.

Sounds like you're just not open minded enough to see what the series is. It's NOT suppose to be a recreation of the old one.

I think I was too young to know what crap was back then. All I cared about was seeing cool special effects. Now that I'm older, I can't believe how campy some of those shows were. Maybe with the exception of original Star Trek.

Best sci-fi series EVER.

Possibly one of the best TV shows on right now period. The acting is top notch. It isn't about the special effects - it's the writing.

At first I couldn't picture Edward James Olmos as Adama or a female Starbuck but man it works somehow.

I don't know if this one will be better than the old one. Yea I go back that far 😛, but I think this one has more substance. The idea of having Cylons look like humans is flat out brilliant. It adds a whole another dimension that the old one couldn't approach. I can't help but wonder if any of the crew will fall in love with the humanoid cylons. Kinda makes you wonder huh.

What I find interesting is the actor portraying Apollo has a really thick British accent yet he sounds perfectly American in the show.

Uhh... have you been watching the show? That's an ongoing subplot. Boomer and the Chief.

And there's more that follows. Don't give it away 😛

What about those of us who can spell, aren't old enough to have seen the original until Scifi started airing it, and still like the original better?
(though the new BG and Andromeda rock 🙂)

James Edward Olmos as commander Adama= amazing
Lorne Greene as commander Adama= what can I say, the man was a legend

old school BSG= awesome, I watched every episode I could when they came out
new school BSG= incredible, the best first season since Firefly (yeah, said that in the thread talking about how SG1 and SGA are so boring, poor acting, poor scripting, etc., so-so special effects)

The writers have definitely done a quality job, the special effects add to the show but do not overwhelm it, the casting of the actors is superb.

The old theme song- classic, really got the heart pounding, it should, it was classic music designed to get the heart pounding, lol
The new theme song- amazing, don't know what the OP was talking about, there is a lot more here than drums, the singing is eery, entrancing, startingly unique.

Why does it have to be one or the other? There are episodes of the original series, Living Legend Part 1-2, the visit to Kobal, Starbuck and the Cylon, that were great on their own.
I love Star Trek, even if it appears campy today. TNG took awhile, it was different but finally stood on its own

This show has a tighter plot scripting, thank JMS and his work on B5 for that. The bar has been raised since the 1960s-70s, and a new generation of movie-makers has risen to the challenge. Pay tribute to the pioneers, salute the new generation 🙂

I want to give some kudos to Sci-Fi Channel, they have 'exceeded expectations', I was prepared to be disappointed from the moment I heard about the mini-series.

I watched the prison ship episode (prisoners take Apollo hostage) but I'm lost to the order of which episode comes first after the pilot episode that aired last year. Help me out, what order should I watch them?

After the 4 hour miniseries, the order of the shows is "33", "Water", "Bastille Day" (prison ship episode), "Act of Contrition", and "You Can't Go Home Again". Next up, airing tomorrow, is "Litmus".

edit: checking the SciFi website, it appears that BSG has already been renewed for a 2nd season. w00t! 😀 Text
