The N Bomb

I was listening to music in my car that i burnt.

In one song you have an African American gentleman dropping N bombs all over the place.

Now, from what i understand, this is a racist term. If a white person says it, they are deemed racist and would get beaten up by said African American gentleman.

I dont understand the logic. If its a bad word, why do they use it all the time?

it was some remix of a kanye west song, i thought it was the original, i was burning in a hurry. whoever remixed the likes the n word, a lot.

the basic question i am asking is, why is the word so widely used by those who hate it?

*sigh* I guess this thread is fucked already so might as well answer

Those who hate it use it as a means of diffusing it of its power. By making it one of "their" words, that is a word that they can use but you cant, they attain some level of control over it's perceived meaning. Before when someone used the word it meant one thing and one thing only. Now it depends on who is saying it. If it's a black person saying it it tends to take on a darker version of the word negro. If it's a white person using it it's still just a racial slur. The idea is that racism removed the black mans honour, pride, sense of worth. But reclaiming the word and using it themselves it gives them a way to say "no you can't call us that anymore, only we may use that word now". The original racist connotations to the word never disappear but by using it themselves they can transform the term somewhat. Does it work, well yes and no.

The thing is, I've seen black people who think "negro" is a racist word. One African-American coworker of mine told me that she even forced her son to wash his mouth out with soap when he asked her what it meant (homework for Spanish class).

You know what brought the subject up? A box of "Gato Negro" wine in my car trunk. Someone saw it when I was loading up to go home from work and said "Wait. Open that back up. That did NOT say what I thought it did, did it?!" It even had a BLACK CAT logo right on the box!

That's just ignorance. The two overlap a lot but don't conflate them.

it was in a work car... would love to burn it

On this topic. I'm reading a older book and it was surprising to see the term used so freely. I mean I get that that was the "norm" for the time peroid but it's just not a word I'm used to seeing in print.

It is socially acceptable for black people (minorities in general) to be racist.

Whitey on the Moon

A rat done bit my sister Nell.
(with Whitey on the moon)
Her face and arms began to swell.
(and Whitey's on the moon)
I can't pay no doctor bill.
(but Whitey's on the moon)
Ten years from now I'll be payin' still.
(while Whitey's on the moon)
The man jus' upped my rent las' night.
('cause Whitey's on the moon)
No hot water, no toilets, no lights.
(but Whitey's on the moon)
I wonder why he's uppi' me?
('cause Whitey's on the moon?)
I wuz already payin' 'im fifty a week.
(with Whitey on the moon)
Taxes takin' my whole damn check,
Junkies makin' me a nervous wreck,
The price of food is goin' up,
An' as if all that shit wuzn't enough:
A rat done bit my sister Nell.
(with Whitey on the moon)
Her face an' arm began to swell.
(but Whitey's on the moon)
Was all that money I made las' year
(for Whitey on the moon?)
How come there ain't no money here?
(Hmm! Whitey's on the moon)
Y'know I jus' 'bout had my fill
(of Whitey on the moon)
I think I'll sen' these doctor bills,
Airmail special
(to Whitey on the moon)
