The most stunningly simple optical illusion I've ever seen.

The fact that I KNOW the colors are the same but I still can't convince my brain to see it is frustrating as hell.

lol damn same here.

This thread is making my brain hurt. Arg...This thread is bound to cause the most head explosions in Anandtech history.

Alright, I have a dumb question - If squares A & B are the same color, then it follows that the squares above, below, and to the left and right of B are also the same color as both A and B, correct? But if that is the case, then why am I able to distinguish between square B and the dark squares adjacent to it? If they really were the exact same color, then it seems like all I should be able to see is a big solid + centered on where the B is, and composed of 5 separate squares.

The squares adjacent to B are actually darker than B itself because they are cast in the shadow of the cylinder.

So in terms of darkness: (Adjacent to B) > (B) = (A) > (Adjacent to A)

At first they didn't look the same. But then I pulled the old crossing eyes thing that we did back in the day for the 3d books, and it looks the same

cross your eyes on purpose - like you are looking at one of those posters with the hidden picture....

Once the image is blurred you will see that they are in fact the same color.

well said

Unless my D80 is also lying, they're full of sh1t.

They're quite clearly different colours.

Both you and your D80 are wrong. Or you're just wrong and you're also using your D80 wrong.

Or the camera can be equally fooled....you do realize there is a reason for gray cards and photography right?

He's the one operating the camera. If you're using a gray card, the exposure is being set manually, and therefore the operator is to blame.

I had to take many many steps back for them to look nearly the same (back far enough A and B disappeared). Even then B still looked lighter. Moving the mouse over, it *appears* B gets darker. I don't doubt they are the same shade but my answer is they're not, so says my optical nerve center.

He never said he set up the shot though...just that he took it.

However your post included all options right or wrong which is typical of how you roll.

It must suck going through life with such limited intellect. Yet you keep trying... and failing.

You realize calling FAIL to a response to your own post just makes you look like a battered bish right?

The only two squares the same are A and B, the other ones that appear close are just that close.
Display page, hit print screen key, open photoshop, file > new, Edit > paste
Then use the color picker on A&B, both are 106,106,106
The whitish square near that is close 108,108,108

Interesting. I starting masking out the image, taking out the cylinder first and then whittling away at the checkerboard until only squares A and B remained. The illusion persisted until I removed the last of the black squares around B.

I tried the same, but with my fingers. Needless to say, I might need a new freakin LCD, I got oil from my hands all over the place 😛

Incredible.

I know it's real, but damn, my brain just won't let me see it without the helps of those lines.

You seem to be stuck in the "argumentative 16 year old" phase forever.

The more I see you post, the more I think you're an idiot.
