those little hybrid ceramic substrate packages are neat - a die(actual transistor) mounted on a circuit board mounted (ceramic) and wired on a circuit board (fiberglass) mounted on a circuit board (fiberglass)
At one point the Apollo program was consuming 60% of the IC's made in the US. The "instrument ring" that basically ran the Saturn V was just above the 3rd stage running @ 2Mhz. It monitored various tank pressure's, engine performance, fuel levels, adjusted the gimbals that controlled the rocket's trajectory and made sure the vehicle would end up in the desired orbit. Pretty cool for a rocket this size and sophisticated, IBM made it. Apollo 12 was hit by lightning (twice) during 1st stage burn, the command module went nuts, data flow to mission control stopped, all 3 fuel cells shut down and they were looking at aborting the mission when a 24yr old engineer John Aaron made the now famous call to the Capcom instructing the crew to throw a switch "SCE to AUX" which restored the telemetry and saved the mission. He had seen that particular pattern on his display about a year before during a simulation. His brain+memory saved the US taxpayers $190,000,000, meanwhile the Saturn V itself was unaffected by the strikes, and put them in a perfect parking orbit. One could only imagine the size of the fire-ball if the range safety official had to send the command to destroy the rocket.
