The Most Disgusting Episode of Hoarders, or Any Show Ever, Probably...

I hope you don't have anything in your stomachs. To be honest, I haven't watched the episode yet. The preview probably made me NOT want to watch it. Link to actual episode in article.

Last night's episode of Hoarders profiled Terry, a cashier who is the cat lady to end all cat ladies. "I always thought the more the merrier," she said, which meant opening her doors to as many strays as came her way. For a while, she was getting them spayed and then she ran out of money. What that led to was a house covered in cat shit, coated in "tons of fecal dust" and crawling with sick animals. In the end, out of the 49 that were living with Terry when the Hoarders crew showed up, 18 were healthy enough to be saved. Terry got to keep none and will be arrested if she ever tries again.

We've seen animal hoarders before (Animal Planet airs a show devoted to it), but nothing close to the likes of Terry, whose house had enough of an ammonia smell to make a kitten's eyes pop out. Oh yeah, she also kept dozens of dead animal carcases (including not just cats, but also a cardinal, a bunny, mice, chipmunks, squirrels and unidentified roadkill) in her fridge in the hope of eventually getting them stuffed. Also found: a partially liquified cat in a freezer bag stuffed in a closet.

Terry is sad and damaged like the average Hoarders subject, but the conditions that she had these animals suffering in is enraging. This episode was so hard for so many people to watch because of that. Think of it as the Cannibal Holocaust principle — once you introduce real animal suffering into your horror show, you turn infinitely more stomachs than if you'd just stuck to the humans. Hoarders always seems to be searching for a way to top itself, as it exists to shock (at least in part). The producers will have a hard time ever topping Terry's story. I don't wish them luck.

I have a friend who works for a medical transport company (moves sick people around by ambulance.) One time he had to move a lady from a hospital back to her home, and he was told that she had a dozen cats there. He was preparing for some disgusting horror show, he arrives and her place and... it's spotlessly clean. All the cats were friendly and looked healthy. He was very surprised.

Watching the clip really made me realize how good my cat has it.

Ha

She's the only animal in the house, is lavished with attention from my fiancee and myself, has nice expensive organic soft cat food (she threw up too much with the hard food) a motorized flowing water fountain I have to change the filter on monthly (she won't really drink still water, unless she slaps it around with her paw first to make it move, which of course makes a mess)...

she has a nice ass litter box we clean constantly, with a cover on it and an air filter on it's top...

she has two separate cat beds around the place, and I think we've bought her about 6 little catnip mice she constantly pushes under the couch so we have to fish them out for her.

Yea... she's lucky she doesn't live with a cat hoarder competing with hundreds of other cats for food and space, in constant stench.

What is it about crazy people and cats? Just about everyone I've ever known with more than one cat has been crazy.

I don't know how someone stands it, the smell my one cat alone can generate is sickening at times.

Actually the cut off line is two. If you have one or two cats you're normal, if you have three or more you're insane.

My wife has a friend exactly like this. She volunteers for the humane society and has adopted lots of cats over the years that nobody else wanted. She has 11 now, and occasionally takes in a kitten or cat on a temp basis until they can find a home for it.

Her house is perfect and spotless, with no smells.

That just means she is good at hiding the crazy. Check for secret switches; you'll probably find a room filled with creepy dolls or a bondage dungeon or something.

The other thing this episode is making me thankful for (I'm watching the full episode now on A&E's site) http://www.aetv.com/hoarders/video/terry-adelle-10778179678#10778179678

... is that I am blessed to not have the hoarder gene really almost at all.

I mean, if I hoarde anything it's digital files I convince myself I'll watch/view later down the line. (Like porn haha) Though, not so much that anymore.

I used to hold onto all my PC game boxes. I don't have those anymore.

I'm blessed with the ability to detach sentimentality from objects and do huge flushes of stuff. My mom has a very mild case of hoarding mentality, not bad at all but enough to annoy me... I've had to go over to her place on multiple occasions, rent a big dumpster thing the size of a truck that sits in the driveway, and just go nuclear on that place. Tossing old furniture and stuff. Unfortunately she limits me so much by trying to attach "oh no you dare not touch such and such" to so much of it... that it makes it impossible to ever truly fix the problem completely.

I'll reserve judgment until after this is answered: indoor or outdoor cats? We currently have... I'm not sure. 7 or 8, I think. Only 1 is allowed to stay inside, and one can visit, though all can get into the laundry room when it's bitter cold outside. They're not too much of a problem outside - except for the cars that have to slow down for them when they're laying in the road (which isn't a problem for me - I like traffic moving a little slower in front of the house.) Plus, they're awesome at keeping mice, rats, and chipmunks away from the house & barn.

It is because you have to be slightly off to want one at all, and after that you can track the progression of their mental illness by the number they have. At 2 they are losing touch with reality, at 3 they have some serious mental issues, 4 is full on delusional, 5+ and they are a danger to yourself and other.

I think 3 beasts is a good number because you can have a continous cycle of animals (die - adopt etc.) without them remaining alone when you're at work or on holiday if someone recently died.
I agree that a single person household with more than 2 animals looks weird.
But for a family having 3 cats is perfectly normal, especially if your cats reproduce because if you can't get all the kitten adopted it's not like you have any choice other than to keep them. Already having 3 cats and adopting a new one is too much though.
1 animal per working adult family member, 0.5 animals per kid. How about this criterion?

I haven't seen this episode yet but there have been prior episodes with major cat hoarders. The preservation of the bodies would be new, but the number of cats is definitely lower than in the prior cat hoarder episodes. Definitely have seen dozens of dead cats in episodes prior. Those episodes make me extremely angry.

Hmmm it may be wrong for me to say this but that woman needs to be put down (or for the faint of heart, locked up)...I'm sorry. Some people are beyond repair and that was fucking disgusting.

A freezer full of cat carcasses? Sounds like Version .5 of Edmund Kemper.
