Almost all countries are divided by language

Germany speaks german
France speaks french
England speaks english
Japan speaks japanese
China speaks chinese
Korea speaks korean

Imagine trying to work at a job or go to a school with every individual speaking a different language....there would be no order, no cooperation, no structure.

And when you have 2 large groups of people each speaking a different language when there is conflict between them, you cant reason with eachother, you cant settle your differences, you can only kill or imprison the other.

I think to achieve a more peaceful world everyone on earth should only speak 1 language and it should be illegal to speak anything else , I think it should be English not just because that's the language I speak but because most people who speak multiple languages agree that English is the easiest language to learn. But any language would do as long if it's only 1, if it was say Chinese then I would put in the time and effort to learn it as long if everyone else is also learning it.

I've really never heard anything so preposterous. In Switzerland, most people speak three languages: German, French, Italian. Comparing Americans, Brits and Indians, Indian English-speakers often demonstrate the best grammar, diction and usage, through an accent that is delightfully mellifluous. They're better at English than the Brits.

Everybody should at least learn a second language. I had a couple thousand Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong-Kong "ese" and Pakistani students over a period of about 10 years. I had too much to do for teaching classes. I remarked to one of my students that I wanted to learn mandarin Chinese. And he replied that I should -- instead -- learn Spanish.

I think he's right. That's all I think. But an element of some 74 million voters in the 2020 election are horrified at the thought.

Comprende, companero? Muy bien entonces . . .

Language is used to incite war.
But a cause? Far from it. As the means behind human organizations, language is the "how" in this equation, while the cause is "why". Apple VS Orange.

I thought this was going to be an actually interesting thought, but then it wasn't.

Dude: there is something to consider here about "language," but instead you decided to focus on "people actually speak different languages and can't understand each other."

This is fucking stupid.

Douglas Adams went the other direction, blaming the babblefish for most wars.

Op gives the class of 1994 a bad name. If he ever watch Khrushchev banging shoe at UN he'll think shoes cause wars.
The appalling lack of quality footwear throughout the length and breadth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is rumored to be the reason Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Ferdinand, which lead to WW1. Tens of millions died.

Also, of course, as Vic so rightly pointed out . . . Cows.

Something about this sounds so biblical. Hmm.

Georgie Patton had something to say about a common language being a source of contention and not those that differ from each other.

I do find it amusing that Gizmo thinks that the default language for the entire planet should be English, because that's the language that HE's most comfortable with.

He also said that it's the easiest one to learn. Funny, I never hear foreign language teachers say that.

I'd imagine that someone living in rural China might have a differing opinion, and there are a lot more of them than the number of English only speakers in the US.

That middle paragraph. English is one of the most inconsistent languages on earth. Must have several exceptions to spelling rules. At least we don't have those stupid male and female identifiers.

You're a fucking idiot.

I'll repeat that.. YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT!

Did you know England has 23 accents and someone who speaks a Geordie can barely comprehend a Cockney.

Did you know Ossis Germans have nothing in common with Wessis?

Did you know Okinawans are treated like trash by Hokkaidans?

And did someone ever teach you the fucking history of the Korean War and when it ended?

That's what I get from pretty much every thread he starts. And he always vanishes after his OP.

I thought the point was going to be the same as Douglas Adams joke about the Babel Fish.

Clearly if nobody spoke the same language and nobody could communicate with each other we'd all get on a lot better (cf this forum, and the internet in general).

I mean, look at the evidence, we overwhelmingly speak American English in the USA, and we're peaceful as fuck here, right?

And the War of 1812 never happened. Nor the US revolution, come to that.
