FYI MSI just released a beta 1.4b2 bios for K8N Neo Platinum that has full mobile support. Running at 245x10 1.75 with no need to use clockgen anymore! I can boot at 285x8.5 set in the bios also. Seems to be a great bios.

It ran P95 for 7.5 hours without a hitch. I think
I may have found my max.

After doing a little more testing, I figured out
that my HTT is limiting me. I can't even POST
@ 9 * 230 = 2070.

Do you think that's due to the CPU or the
motherboard?

MSI has just put out a new BETA bios 1.4b2

Guess what IT SUPPORTS MOBILES

My system boots to default values (DTR - 1.55v 200mhz x10) AND I can adjust the htt and have it stick in the bios. NONE of these values were sticking for me in the past with any other bios, I was adjusting them with clockgen.

Looks like this is the bios we have been waiting for.

I've never had inaccurate temp readings but they are still correct for me.

Anyway check this bios out

Lower your Hypertransport speed to 600mhz. That'll allow you to go up to around 244 HTT.

Bar81, when I get my a64 newcastle cg core and flash it to the newest F3d bios, do you think that would then allow me to use mobiles? If it does I will probably send the newcastle back because that extra cache is worth it.

You've hit the limit of your chip. To make sure, you could lower the multiplier (if you updated to the 1.70) BIOS and see if you can do 230HTT.

I have no idea. You're gonna have to be the guinea pig for this one ;)

I have no huge problem with that. I love getting the most for my money and I will go mobile again if I can get some sort of confirmation from gigabyte for mobile microcode being added to the bios. BTW , what ist he command to quote someone? /q \q or what?

Bar81, I have no clue what's with this mobo.... Mine came from newegg about 1 month ago with the F1 bios and that worked with my 1.4v 2800+ but was really slow. I then flashed it to f2 (I don't like f3a and haven't tried f4a yet) and it worked fine with both the 1.4v 2800+ and 1.4v 3200+. I've completely cleared the CMOS 3 or 4 times to make sure it wasn't just one of the boot with a good chip, then switch it with the mobile type of occurances but each time its worked fine with the 3200+. I can try to flash it back to f1 to see if it boots with the 3200+ if people would like.

Hello all. I was waiting for Newegg to restock the Epox 8kda3j, when I found this thread. It's been very informative. Thanks to all that have contributed.

After reading through this entire thread and many others, I still don?t feel like I know enough to assemble the best combination of cpu, ram, and heatsink/fan for the dollars that I spend.

I want to build a budget workstation for CAD. I don?t mind a slight overclock, but I have to have stability. I think the Asrock K8S8X would be a much better selection for my needs than the 8kdaj3. However, I need help with the following issues:

1)Do I buy the 3200 Newcastle with heatsink and fan for $218. If so, what brand, speed, and amount of ram do I buy?

2)Do I buy the CG core 3200 Clawhammer DTR for $239 plus $40 for heatsink and fan. If so, what brand, speed, and amount of ram do I buy?

3)Do I buy the 3400 Newcastle with heatsink and fan for $294. If so, what brand, speed, and amount of ram do I buy?

4)How would the performances compare?

Obviously I?m trying to find the sweet spot, so I can get the most bang for my buck. I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone would care to make.

Does anyone know if there are any known raid 1 configuration issues with the Asrock that haven?t been resolved? Thanks.

The best bang for the buck would be the ASRock K8S8X motherboard, Newcastle 3200+, and Mushkin PC3200 (green or whatever, it doesn't really matter as it will all be fine. Whichever is cheapest) Use the retail heatsink/fan. Enjoy. No need to overclock but if you wanted to simply set the memory speed to 166, set the Hypertransport speed to 600mhz, and push the HTT to 218 and you should be set with a nice 200mhz overclock (worked well on my old Newcastle setup) If you want to overclock I'd suggest you also pick up a better heatsink/fan combo like an Alpha PAL8150 and 80mm fan or the Thermalright SLK-948U with a Vantec Stealth 92mm fan.

No, I haven't but I can't imagine you would have any issues. If you did, ASRock would fix it within a day or two (they're fast like that) but like I said we would have heard something by now if there was an issue.

mad3d flash back to f1 and see what happens :) I'm curious. I have the same board from newegg ordered about 2 weeks ago and it came with the f1 bios also. I got a no boot on a good 3000+ 1.4v. My newcastle CG core 3000+ will be here tomorrow. If the board doesn't work, in a way that will be good. That would tell me the board was just bad the whole time. If it boots up then I'd say this may be one of the cases wher eyou have to buy a desktop cpu first to flash it to the newer bios. We'll see what happens tomorrow. I get the proc around 1:00pm CST. If all goes well I may try a 3000+ 1.4v again, but thats a lot of money :( and I'm sick of rma'in every damn thing I buy. What is the MAX voltage you can set your proc to mad3d?

mad3d - yes please try it with the f1 bios. I tried clearing it a few times, including removing the battery all with no luck. It just turns on and hangs. Well it's very good news that at least someone got it to post, however I noticed in your screenshot that the bios rev was F1? what's the deal with that?

F1, F2, and F4a work (I didn't try F3a). Pictures proof is here: wam.umd.edu/~mdickers -- F1.jpg, F2.jpg and F4a.jpg ... sorry about the huge pictures size. For all the bioses I cleared the CMOS and they still booted fine. If you have anything else you'd like me to try, let me know.
