I'm going to college next month, and I'm looking around and parts for my new computer. I was planning on getting a Athlon64 2800+ 1MB 1.4V from Newegg, but I don't know which motherboard/chipset to go with. I'm looking to do some overclocking.. nothing super extreme, just air cooling.

I almost jumped on the refurb Asus K8Vs they had at newegg. They're OOS now and I missed by chance...

Or would I just be better off getting a non-mobile... Newcastle core? Which yield better overclocking?

Can anyone offer me any suggestions?

I need some quick help if at all possible. I orderd what I thought was a GA-K8N Pro, instead I got a GA-K8NS Pro using the nforce 3 250gb chipset. I can not get the thing to boot with my mobile 1.4 athlon 3000+ 64 for anything. The vid card ram and pwr sup. are all good. The only thing I can think of is the bios doesn't support mobile processors. Please send some support my way, I'd really rather not have to order a desktop processor just to fix it, I may just return the motherboard.

A little more info. I took the cpu out and checked for any physical core damage and there was none. This cpu worked fine in a asrock about 3 days prior. The motherboard turns on and the NB fan turns, ram led comes on and all of that. The ram is tested and works, the video card is tested and works, powersupply is fine. I have no drives plugged in, only the bare essentials. CPU fan is plugged into the cpu fan connecter on the mobo. The only thing I can think is that the motherboard is bad, but that seems unlikely since it has led's on andthe NB fan is running. I would also like to point out that the usb doesn't seem to light up the mouse or anything like that, which seems unusuals. I get no beeps, no nothing. ideas please!! :(

definetely cleared the bios already. I went ahead and rma'd both the cpu and mobo. I imagine that it should work after that right? I saw on the extremesystems.org forums that others were having problems getting the k8ns pro to boot with dtr or 1.4 also, so it makes me wonder if it ALWAYS boots or if its just a possibility.

I also found the DTR 3000+ is $51 cheaper then the 1.4v 3000+ at newegg. I am thinking I should go ahead and stick with the DTR b/c thats a decent amount of money to save, what do you all think? Will I have more problems with the DTR at k8ns pro or the same? Thanks.

Any word on the Asus K8N-E Deluxe?

shows 2 BIOS's 1001 and 1002. Seeing as 1001 was posted June 18th and 1002 July 12th 1002 should be on all boards but...


I wonder if 1001 is the BIOS used by the few that seem to be able to break 220fsb; or maybe the other way round?

I dunno; don't have the board but maybe/hopefully someone can shed some light :)

I got the same problem with k8ns pro it just didn't support mobile CPU - same symptoms
So the motherboard turned out to be OK (with desktop CPU) and CPU was fine (with another mobo)

Got all my stuff: 3200 DTR, K8N 1gig ocz plat.

STUPID 948U is not here yet!!!!!!!

Think it would be ok if i booted my system, just to bios, with a p3 heatsink just sitting on top of the processor?

no... if you're seriously considering that send me your 3200 DTR, K8N and gig-o-ram now and pretend you fried it...

But my K8NS PRO was probably from the older batch.
Also I didn't try to put the newest F2 bios on it.
So it still might work for the latest revision and F2 bios

Until we're clear on that I don't feel it should be up there. It seems every board is shipping with the F1 bios if I understand correctly, whether claimed working or nonworking with mobiles. That means that somehow there should be some kind of revision to the motherboard itself!?! It just doesn't make any sense that one person got it to work with the same BIOS no one else has been able to get to work.

If you can flash with a desktop CPU and then plug in a mobile or you otherwise get any solid info on the board I'll put it back up there but in the meanwhile I think it's prudent to keep it off the list as I don't want someone else to buy it and then run into problems.

As I said in some of my previous posts, the k8ns pro definately works with all three bioses - f1, f2, and f3a (f2 is the best). It may not seem like its going to post with the f1, but give it about a minute and it will start to boot. Flash it to the f2 bios and all your problems will be solved. Also, I got around to testing sata corruption as the fsb went up, the drive seems to be fine with high (>270) fsbs.

just wondering... would something like the ocz ddr booster help with uping the vdimm on some boards?

iv just read this whole post and im thinking about getting the asrock k8s8x + dtr 3200(1st choice) or 3000+, just cant deiced on what videocard, cuz its not an nvidia chipset id wanna try out the x800's.... but sm3.0 looks to good to pass up.

i also notice im pretty much forced into getting the thermalright heatsink. know of any water blocks that work without modding?

you're going to ditch your whole watercooling setup just to use a mobile? im sure you could just cut the mounting screws on your waterblock so you can screw it in deeper

not ditching, im just bulding a budget a64 box(even tho 6800gts arnt budget but i doubt im going to go get one now), and the only things i like loud are my music.

no go. I let the thing sit there for 5minutes and I got no boot. My proc worked 4 days ago and my mobo should be fine also, it has led's on ram on and all fans running. I think I'm gonna just ditch this whole setup back to newegg and get another one back, same board same proc, and see what happens....ahhhh
