The "folds" reduce drag substantially and save quite a bit of fuel.

If planes can fly closet path connectiong point A to point B, it will have a shorter travel mileage than land travel, but in reality, how does air miles compare to land miles to go to say Houston from San Francisco?

Only a half full 747 is a good 747... especially if you have an entire centre aisle all to yourself, then you have a nice flat bed, even in economy. Those are my favorite flights :)
